Derren brown is brilliant, have been to see his live show and he had my wife on stage and told her many things about a friend who had recently passed away, all the time telling her that he wasn't a medium and it was all fake.. it was incredible if honest he is a master of misdirection etc and is very transparent.

I saw a "psychic" in a local pub- she did some pretty bad cold reading then she actually was quite abusive- arguing with a woman about how her mother died, causing her to cry, etc. When she came to me, I just agreed with everything she said that was wrong (a tip from Ian Rowland's book) and she spouted more wrong things! Most of these people are not stupid or gullible, they are usually in some form of grief, or have other psychological issues that make them susceptible to these forms of thinking. We mostly all want to believe there is something after we die, even if we don't believe in a god. Some of us just buy into things more easily. Coming from a religious background, wanting to believe is inherently in my nature. It’s amazing what we absorb when we are growing and learning and as we reach maturity we think we have arrived and are so sure of the seeds planted in our minds. The prospect of death and blinking into nothingness I’ve hidden from. Often people reach for a higher conciseness and find God and excel, change their behaviour. So after watching this video, it’s likely that they are just believing in themselves and the thought of the aforementioned watching over is the driving force to change. Although very frightening, I guess my eyes are now opened and can never go back to what I have thought my entire life. It’s kinda like familiarity of an old friend that I has passed and I now need to let go of. A belief that brought me comfort I suppose. The video actually made me de convert after years of belief, strangely I was actually on a parish church choir. Irrespective, I feel scared and disillusionment but I’m happy to see what ultimately I’ve been running from, mortality and all that represents So….thank you

I never remember dreams, I only remember my nightmares... I've never had a good dream that I could remember, not even when I first wake up.. I really don't know what it's like to have regular dreams. I had a sleep study, they attached a bunch of wires to my head and watched me sleep... turns out my brain doesn't enter REM sleep the same as normal people. My brain only enters REM about 30% as long as normal people. That also explains why I wake up exhausted, I never feel refreshed or like I've had a good night's sleep.. I live in a constant state of exhaustion.

Its called cold reading. There are many books on the subject. You can also watch Derens interview with Richard Dawkins where he talks in a lot more in detail with how this works.

So the answer is normally quite mundane. Consider that Derren probably has about 40 researchers and the background of each attendee is studied meticulously. Combined with that and the previous comments regarding participant reponse\body language etc. you can have a very convincing "reading" of seemingly random assertions.

So if this is all based on suggestion why does the guy fall at 17:29 at the exact time as the hand gesture he can't see? I didn't see any cue from the man he was starting to fall. If you stand with your eyes closed, feet together and arms by your sides, you are limiting your ability to balance. At the start DB effectively told him he was going to fall backwards by saying he was going to catch him, plus the guy has probably seen people falling backwards in this way on TV recordings of healing etc. It’s then just a case of waiting for the guy to fall and react accordingly. Relatively straightforward stuff.

Curt seems dubious saying Derren has a touch that can convert people. He left after the first person and was visibly uncomfortable with whatever question he was asked. I think it's a tad misleading to say he was "impressed." Not defending him either, but what Derren says doesn't match what I see.

Derren, buddy, I tries to tell ya, just because you got to play Zork on an Amiga voice-to-text headset that barely had the lexicon of a well trained dog, doesn't mean people obey verbal commands like they're some kind of mind control drone. Remember, you're on television, but that doesn't mean you are a television. But yeah, I know some of it is scientifically founded and does work. Incidentally, that's why I'm imploring you to decry criminal and malicious misuse of techniques like these. There are groups online demonstrating practices which can be used to commit fraud and identity theft. Furthermore, I've personally had to assist women sexually assaulted after being placed under duress or otherwise maliciously coerced. These are crimes, and people should be appalled and put them to a stop.

Generally I find Derren very entertaining, and agree with many of his views on scepticism. I felt uncomfortable though that people in these tests felt like he was the real deal, and I really hope that the atheists in particular did not come out of this changing their minds about god beliefs.

I've not even watched this yet because it's still on the advert. But you thumbnail "Messiah or fake" tells me everything I need to know about this. He, himself, tells you he's not a psychic (or medium etc) because they don't exist. He exposes these mediums for being the charlatans that they are. So I don't think you know Darren Brown if you're willing to do a video like this.

it's kinda like someone breathing in and out quickly, and then feeling lightheaded. he's just telling people to breathe, and telling them he's the one making them feel lightheaded. a room of atheists and nonbelievers, who'd go out of their way to talk to someone of a faith, under regular discussion and circumstance, will have a variety of opinions, based on their personal history, their motivations, and so on. whether or not these people are right or wrong, is irrelevant - that they would go to a discussion of spirituality, and stick around as a guy starts talking like he'll rope them into faith healing....basically hints that they're suggestible to changing their opinion on an emotional or social basis. derren just creates that social basis. now to get to your point, the man he made fall backward basicallt wasn't all that against religion in the first place. whether he really realized it or not (probably not), derren told him he'll do something to him that will make him fall backward. so this guy just probably thought "he mentioned i'll feel something, and that he'll catch me. so i guess i'll wait for that feeling, then fall back." accordingly, derren just motioned like he's gonna try and pull the guy back, wait until the guy looks like he starts falling, then start making it look like he pulled him back. TL;DR he implied that the guy should fall back. so the guy fell back. then derren pretended that he pulled him back.
