I was just playing with some of these with my 2 year old daughter and was thinking "ya know, I could maybe use these for a space hulk setting for kill team with a little work..." and then, here you are on my recommended. What I liked about these tiles, ever since I saw Mark Dickey's video on them, is how the proportions are all right for Warhammer. Wide enough to get even fairly large bases through. Tall enough so even the taller infantry models aren't just poking out the top. It feels like the halls of a space ship where firefights in the 40K universe could reasonably take place.

Random first aid stations make total sense in 40k. I don't know if you have them were you live, but the US has so many defibrillators everywhere that the average one never gets used over its lifetime (probably out of ten, one might used on average). Something which makes it fit even more with the grimdarkness of 40k, is most of the defibrillators would not work properly if used. There is a narrow line between how the amount of electricity needed to restart a heart and the amount which will damage it. Aside from places like hospitals, they are not checked to ensure they are providing a correct amount of electricity, so the use of one has a very good chance of either making it worse or doing nothing.

Honestly tempted to give this a try for some D&D dungeons. Hell, you could use the modular nature of this stuff to mimic a much larger dungeon - remove sections behind the players and use the parts to make the sections ahead of them. The plastic should slide smoothly over most table surfaces allowing you to move the entire thing around as needed.

Just a quick FYI for a profilic terrain manufacturer like myself you could have cut back a good chunk of your painting time by using spray cans or an airbrush. I know not every country is as lucky as Australia with having spray can weather 99% of the year but if your location/living arrangements allow it's as an option then arming yourself with a Matte Black, Grey & White will greatly reduce your time insitu doing your majority of painting. The airbrush is much the same process just a touch more investment in time and cost to setup. Your going to use that basic colours to do zenithal priming basically to give your dark area's or shadows where needed and light areas from above. The rest can be done easily using weathering powders, home made acrylic washes or even oil based washes. I've done like 12+ table's now of 4' by 4' board's of dense Infinity style Sci-fi terrain and a few game agnostic ones too for Bolt Action or Grimdark Future. ;)
@maddokminis
@maddokminis Жыл бұрын
Thank you mate - I tend to use a lot of rattle cans myself! - I used grey spray primer on all the wall sections which doubled as an undercoat - massive time saver! The weathering actually didn’t take that long - about an hour for leadbelcher scuffs and Nuln oil washes - not bad when you get in mass production mode 👍 not a fan of airbrushes myself - I own 2 bit seldom use them - far too much cleaning and maintenance for me! 🤣😱 thanks so much for the feedback brother and sharing your thoughts 🙏 I appreciate you taking the time to watch mate 👍

@@maddokminis Oh, you want feedback? I can definitely do feedback! ;) I appreciate the relative simplicity of the video production, so to speak. Straigth to the point, no loud disctracting music or SFX, no forced memes or jokes, no overlong intro or outro padding, etc. etc. This is EXACTLY the corner of KZbin I enjoy the most. :) I also really enjoy your narration. You have a pleasant voice, and you are able to explain your points clearly without a lot of uhhming and ahhing. At the same time, you're not using a super dense manuscript trying to cram a dizzying amount of info into each second of the video. Great balance IMO. You're full of good tips and techniques, yet it's very easy to follow you process. Regarding your modeling: I love the detailing work you made, and I love how you mix all kinds of materials for the purpose. I feel like you also hit a very good balance with the amount of detail here, putting in just enough to achieve a good effect while keeping it simple enough to allow for a quick build. Is this the best modeling I have ever seen in my life? No, of course not. BUT, it is something that looks great, and would be achievable for me to build. And that is so much more important to me as a viewer, and will keep me coming back to your channel. :) As for suggestions on how to potentially improve the end result, I have just a few: - try experimenting with using a piece of sponge your ripped into a non uniform shape. That creates a very effective result when stippling, and it is much easier to avoid the repeating patterns we often get when stippling with a brush. Different types of sponges create different results, but pretty much any kind of sponge can work. - try varying the color of the wall pieces a bit more. Maybe through stippling on a few slightly different shades of gray (eeheheheh) to create subtle variation. Or use different colors on some of the recessed or raised details. Or do entire sections of the map up in something like a screaming orange to hint at a different section of the ship/base/building. You could also achieve a similar effect by going super heavy with washes in some places but not in others. - Try adding some color detail like hazard striping, color coded doors or signage and so on. You're already a lot of the way there, but I feel like it's not QUITE enough to break the gray monotony of the walls. - Try adding some effect paints. Kind of like what you're doing with the wash already, but more focused on creating visual interest. Maybe an oil spill in a corner, or neon-green alien blood oozing through a floor grate, or bloor sprays and so on. - Consider sealing everything with a clear laquer, if you haven't already. The edges and corners will rubb off quickly during use, I imagine. But who knows, maybe the neon colored plastic underneath will actually enhance the look! Very sci fi to be sure. All that being said, I think this is a wonderful project and a wonderful video. I believe this is the first video I've seen from you, but I subscribed instantly. Looking forward to going through your previous work as well as seeing what you have in store in the future. Thanks! :)

If you are doing it as more of a space hulk setup, you could use the half-squares to represent walls, that way they don't stand so high and weigh down so much. Since you're probably playing with a no-flying rule during those battles, you can simply add the common-sense rule that you can't shoot through "or over" corridor or room walls. Or you could use them as smaller hallway sections like catwalks or ventilation ducts, places where units smaller than a space marine or terminator can ambush from.

This may have already been mentioned, but you could tape an irregular shape on the flat surface of one of those green ones, then peel the tape off once painting is done, and have a weird acid pool eating through the floor. Maybe cut a matching hole in the granny grating. Maybe use other colors for other problems ... or little circles on the red ones for hazard lights and squares covered by grates in yellow ones for furnaces.

Nice, I like this :) ... reminds me a little of space crusade :D One extra thing that can be done with the cardboard is too emboss some panel lines etc. and if you've got a river wheel even better. Card will take an embossing quite well and allows you to break up the surfaces without them becoming overly fussy. What you created is effective though, really adds to game immersion ! :)
@maddokminis
@maddokminis Жыл бұрын
Thank you mate - that is a great idea 👍 even just a few rivets will go a long way! I intentionally kept most of the wall tiles quite flat to allow for additional terrain in the rooms 👍 but the idea of embossing is superb as it won’t interfere with this! Watch this space! Thanks for watching mate 👍
@freezatron
@freezatron Жыл бұрын
@@maddokminis nice thing about embossing is that you can still do it on a paint surface :) Adding some panels would be both effective and easy too, it also gives the rivets something to frame so to speak. I use dead biros, those pointy tools whose name I forget are good for getting crisp lines be sure to lean them over in the direction of travel so they don't dig into the card etc. once your done add a pin wash and all that. Given that these tiles have a thickness to them one more idea is to cut out holes in the plastic on one side of the walls, stuck wires and pipes into the hole and use the card to frame the hole tidily to give the impression a panel is missing, classic sci fi detailing plus it won't interfere with adding extra scenery :) Another idea is to use the card for some floor tiles to mix things up a bit and emboss floor tiles with subdivisions, edging and rivets too. Few more dashes of colour would go a miss either, some cool grey some warm grey tiles, add a few computer consoles built into the walls, the occasional black and yellow hazards stripes, some red stripes, radioactive/ bio hazard signs, some little splashes of neon green blood here an there etc. etc. Not too much of course but a few dashes here and there. You could make the floor tiles double sided using card as thick as that grid stuff you used that way all the tiles sit at the same height ;) Loads of potential with this !! I do like it :)

when you consider the laft that some of these magnets arent really usable for your purposes id say $70 is pretty expensive for relatively few pieces. 3D printing gives you more for your money and you can still inlay magnets in them and you can detail them however you want.

Duder this is amazing!! I wish you would get turned onto sprue goo though (assuming that you haven't already and I just have not seen the vid yet) you can make up some sprue goo with model cement or acetone with GW it works great as a filler as well for gaps in models etc. Anyway you take a sprue lay it flat on some parchment paper I think that's what you Brits call it, and then spread the sprue goo over it/fill in the spaces within the frame and BAM!!! You've got a wall! There is actually another channel who has made a few videos doing this you could check out. Not saying you should go do his thing just suggesting for personal use then maybe 1 day you might want to share what you've come up with. It's also really great for making skin like textures on kit bashes, like say you want to add a little arm to the side of a death guard demon or something, well you can just hack the Arm on with a drop of cement then slather some of this stuff over top of it a little more than you need as it does shrink as it dries as well but then when it's like half dried you can take and manipulate the little arm and move it back and forth just you know work with it until it's what you want but then it creates creases and stretch lines and pulls it in One direction or the other & actually looks like a little arm jutting out the side of the body and the skin is reacting to its motion. I did this on the death guard demon Prince that I emailed a picture of you can't see it in the picture though this potato camera just couldn't pick up the detail and my lighting is pitiful but trust me it's basically free to make it doesn't take a lot of time and you can get really great effects out of it.

Depends on how you buy the KT boxed sets and how much you have to buy these magnets for. From what I see, these magnets are over $1 each in Canada at the cheapest. The box I got has 102 pieces for $50 CAD but most are "unusable" for floors or walls with only 38 squares ($1.30 per tile.) A 24"x24" field would be small for KT and still use 64 squares just for the floor. The real savings is going to come in diversity and ease of changing the layout. As MDM showed, being able to put your own special touches is a bonus.

I haven’t gone that route with my minis and don’t intend to so I can’t really answer with certainty - my guess is probably yes and no. Overall - probably not a great combination 🙁 thanks for your question mate 👍
