Frogs vs Toads: different families (Ranidae and Bufonidae, respectively). Most Frog species have smooth, moist skin, a narrow body, long legs and teeth in the upper jaw. Toads have bumpy skin, a short body, stocky legs and usually don’t have teeth. Either can use poison as a defense. Frogs secret through the skin. In Toads it’s held in poison sacs behind the eyes. Frogs prefer moist environments, toads enjoy dry conditions.

Auction Box Lot: for many years, I worked for (and sourced at) our large Brick and Mortar local Auction House. I found buying box lots (and large remaining lots at or Estate Sales) had some of the best ROI in the game. What I’d do is first make sure the lot had something I wanted or enough quick flip value to cover my buy in cost. Then, I’d make new box lots up from the remaining unwanted items (often merging 2, 3 or 4 similar lots from different sales/sources). When I had enough of the lots prepared, I’d consign the newly made lots back to the auction house, a month or two later. Kept the mess in my workshop and storage issue to a minimum and the earnings (after fees) from the freshly made lots would be nearly free money. The categories are endless: hand tools, pottery, jewelry, vintage toys, garden tools, record albums, etc.

At some auction sales, if I didn’t buy enough individual items to fill up my Truck (or usually my truck and enclosed trailer) I’d buy 1 or 2 large groups of remaining items, if they were on the auction floor in Plastic Storage totes (with lids). I would do this just to get the storage totes for pennies on the dollar. When I’d sort out the lots, looking for resale items, I’d keep the totes in the styles I liked for my own listing/storage needs and use those I didn’t care for to send back later with fresh consignments. If you’ve purchased good quality totes lately, you’d see that I’d be buying totes and get the goods inside for ”free”. Doing this regularly meant I got literally hundreds of Rubbermaid and Sterlite totes for pennies.

Hi Karen! I can't find a single creamer on the whole world wide web listed with a lid. It seems as if only the sugar bowl came with a lid. So cute! I love the 70's! Thank you for your videos! I feel less crazy watching them while I list in my basement full of thrifted items! :) I love your system, I store things the same way! "Great minds think alike!"

Griswold Cast Iron: 140 years ago there were many, many American Companies making Cast Iron kitchen items like Pans, Bakeware and Dutch ovens, but they fell by the wayside in the middle of the 20th century. Wagner is another well collected brand, but many really old pans do not have brand markings, often just a casting number. Griswold stopped about 1957 (I was born in 1959). I think Lodge is about the only one left and they’re plants are near you in Pittsburgh, so you should see more Lodge the either Griswold or Wagner. Lodge survived because they came up with pans that didn’t need to be seasoned by the homeowner.

Yes, cast Iron has always been on my list of interesting items. Not just pans, but door stops, trivets and architectural pieces. The industry in the US took a big hit, after World War II, since alternative materials (like aluminum and glass) began making inroads into use in the Kitchen and Cast Iron always had some negative aspects, like weight, freight shipping costs and the need to "season" the cast iron from time to time. Also, China began introduction less expensive versions in the 60s and 70s.

Barrister Shelves: most of the real ones (lots of cheap imitations) are stacking modules. There is a base unit the first shelf sits in, then you stack additional interlocking modules until you have the height you need and put a “cap” module on top. Gravity holds them together, but separate modules makes them much easier to move when needed.

At auctions/estate sales in our area $100 and up (per section) is about the norm for a good antique cabinet maker.
@brianhenry2385
@brianhenry2385 Жыл бұрын
If you’re seriously consider bidding on a future unit, don’t forget to check that the cabinet has all original matched glass. Sometimes one case gets broken and gets replaced with more modern glass, which lowers the value. Stand back and look to check for tint variation and open the glass doors and look at the rear glass stops (hold down trim strips) to see if it’s been pulled and put back badly. Also check that the glass doors retract and open smoothly. Back when I worked for a large auction house, some consigners would stack mis-matched shelf units that were married together from slightly different styles/years. Usually the wood grain and finish would vary slightly, to give you the tip-off.

Auction State Sales Tax: you mentioned paying Sales Tax at the auction. Most states/Auction Houses let you put a Reseller Permit number (or paper copy) on file at the time you register and the tax is not collected by the Auction House, when you buy Used Goods. Our auction house puts a single copy on file once per year and keeps it active for regular buyers. Resellers later pay the tax as part of their business taxes, on the profit, as part of their business tax filing.

I have three of those Globe barrister bookcases. Each of the cases have four sections. My parents bought them in the mid-1950's from one of the big oil companies that was closing their office on the San Francisco Peninsula. I can't remember whether my dad told me that they paid $5 in total or $5 per bookcase. I just love your show. I stopped selling on eBay about 2 yrs ago. I am thinking of getting back into the game. 8:59 and that white mid-century chair with the red pillow on the bottom was one of my dining room chairs. My ex-husband emptied the marital house, then vandalized it, while I was separated from him and we were supposed to be working on equitable distribution through lawyers (did I mention he was a minister?!) - this was in Virginia, in the early 2000's. Oooodleso of beautiful things. Yes you are right. You don't get much at Pottery Barn even on sale. Were I live there are a couple of ladies who repurpose that french provincial furniture at the auction in beautiful mineral paint, refinished wood tops and sometimes the drawers are painted or stencilled with flowers. Just gorgeous and so much better than overpriced stuff in the stores now. I wish I needed a new bedroom set just to buy their lovely work, but alas what I have is in great condition.

All our auctions went to online during covid and have never gone back to live. My first buy was two 7 foot shelves of miscellaneous, mostly dishes and glass. One had a lot of clear glass which contained 3 Simon Pearce Christmas trees that sold fast and for big money. Also to of his bowls. I only paid $40 for the shelf of items. That had me hooked on auctions. Love the oak plant stand. I do like the live auction better.

We did these same sets in the ceramic shop my sister owned and operated in the 70s & 80s. They never had lids for the creamer... but the shop owners bought and poured these molds themselves so perhaps some did make lids for their shop's creamers. The sugar and creamer lid would have probably been interchangeable. I have some old mold catalogs so I might have an Arnel one - just to see if they showed them with lids.
