Throughout my time as a motorcycle mechanic I saw many small capacity motorcycles which came from the factory with this type of chaincase fitted. In virtually all that I worked on, the drive chains were excessively loose, devoid of any lubricants and badly rusted. It was not unusual for the drive chain to have been so loose for so long that they actually cut their way through the lower chaincase. It really was a case of out of sight, out of mind, and instead of the drive chain being in a well adjusted, clean and lubricated condition, it was the exact opposite. No matter how many times I showed the riders how to take proper care of their chains, they simply ignored it, resulting in more expensive bills and a shorter lifespan for their chains and sprokets. When I did find a correctly adjusted chain which was rust free and well lubricated, it was a very pleasant surprise and one which earned the rider a discount as a sign of my respect for the care they had taken.

It's a good idea to protect the chain and give it a longer life but.... and so many nooks and crannies in the chain case where rust can take hold.
