I bought By The Sea a couple of months ago. It stood out to me because it is by a Zanzibari author and I was lucky to visit the island on 2 separate occasions as a teenager and absolutely loved it. I had never heard of this book before seeing it at the bookshop so it’s good to see you recommending it. 😊

The synopsis of Boy Swallows Universe brings to mind Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver (recently longlisted for the Women's Prize for Fiction). Highly recommend listening to the audiobook!

Ooh I really want to read Demon Copperhead! It was also recently an Oprah Book Club selection so I definitely hope to get to it soon!

I just read The High Rise by: J.G. Ballard, which is about a man who moves into this newly built High Rise and its designed so you never want to leave. The build starts to malfunction and the residents start to get more primitive. Its really good.

I read Toibin’s House of Names and The Testament of Mary, and I really enjoyed the them both. Don’t know why I haven’t read more of his books yet. The Book of Aron definitely sounds worth a read 😊

He seems to be a very versatile writer. I just looked into the two you mentioned and they sound very different to what I've read from him so far. Very intriguing! I might have to give them a try

Some great finds here! I added a bunch of them to my TBR and a couple to my TBR-next. Thanks! Also - re: the person who said there was interference in your video - there was no interference. Video quality was great.

What a fantastic list of books. I have read 2 - Jasper Jones and Outrun, both brilliant. I have just bought 3 on your recommendation - Boy Swallows Universe, Past the Shallows and To Siberia. Many thanks from Edinburgh 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I love Colm Tóibín, but I hadn't come across that one before, thanks for mentioning it! (trots off to add to TBR pile). With regard to how his name is pronounced... ahh, welcome to the joys of the Irish language, otherwise known as "how the f*ck am I supposed to pronounce that?" 😆 The little accent on some of the vowels is known as a "fada", and it emphasises the vowel sound. In this case, Tóibín is pronounced "tow-been". Hope this helps! 😁 You were really pretty close, I've heard some spectacular hatchet jobs over the years, so I wouldn't feel too bad if I were you... 👍

Omg thank you! 🥰✨ Some Irish names are spelt very interestingly I will say! “Tow-been” will sound much better than my “toy-bin” that’s for sure! 😂
