In this quick tip, Taryl goes over a trick he often uses when he can't find replacement parts for a carb or is in a bind. Not always, but using this quick easy tip can stop your carburetor from leaking! If not, you will have to go another route either replacing the needle and seat or another carburetor. Regardless, here's a nice little snack that you can store away in your memory banks until the time is right.
And as always, Theres Your Dinner!!

Old school trick my dad uses is to coin the seat. Just whack the steel needle with a hammer to coin the brass seat and "fix" the sealing surface. Obviously does not work in all cases, but can get you going.

I use brazing rod with a beveled end to match the needle . Sometimes just changing the angles will make it seat .

That's a great idea. I have all the parts already in my garage. I always have fuel line for two strokes and four stroke engines. I also keep on hand lapping compound or hand for working on cylinder heads. Depending on the temperature here tomorrow I'm going to go over to the garage and give this a try.

I came up with this idea on my own several years ago for my Walbro with a non replaceable seat, except, I used jewelers rouge. Maybe if I had used lapping compound, I wouldn't have had to buy another carb.

I use to use 0000 steel wool to polish low speed needle jets and makes the engines carbitrate very smoothly. You can also use it to polish out the final coat of Tung oil on your grandma's dresser drawers.

Another trick I’ve learned that will sometimes work on stubborn seats, is to use a small drill bit that is a size smaller than the needle. Put it in your drill and run it in reverse against the seat. Run it on SLOOWW speed! This will burnish the seat and help it seal. Once I’ve burnished, then I’ll polish it. Normally between the two processes, I can get it to seal.

Taryl, you should sell small quantities of fuel line on your website for grossly exagerated prices. As you know, fuel line is normally only sold by the reel. Some of us just like to have 36" of line of various sizes on hand. Many of us would pay a few dollars a foot to get some fuel line thrown in with that Slippers coffee mug. Just sayin'! Thanks for all of your work!

Taryl, I have seen quite a few of your videos and dont recall you bringing attention to your steel workbench. At least one that I have gotten to yet. You should show us how it is constructed, its size and how thick the top is. In other news I heard that the American Association of Orthodontist are looking for a new mascot. Now that you have some notoriety perhaps you can get your foot in the door over there?

Pretty cool idea! Many needles have a coating on them.....like a rubber type substance. I guess you wouldn't want to damage that stuff with lapping compound....I'm not sure though. Something to keep in mind.

Another good idea is to take a closeup picture of the seat with your cell phone and blow it up to see if there is any noticeable damage or imperfections in the seat. On my Toro time cutter, it looked as though someone deliberately scored the seat with a small screwdriver or something. I ground a piece of 1/8 piano wire to match the angle of the needle, and made a brass guide to insert into the bore for a guide for the rod, and spun it with a drill with rubbing compound. Kept taking pictures until the score marks were gone, and it hasn't leaked since.

Here’s one that works 99%. Get a steel bb not copper. Steel is usually perfectly round copper are not. It has to be bigger than the hole in the seat. Drop it in and use a punch and whack it several times. This will round out the seat. Hope this helps.
