21 Aug 2023, up in the Sawtooth mountains I was on my 2022 KTM 300 XCW. It had rained hard for three days and creeks had began running again. Was a very difficult trail that snaked around through steep cliffs but, was in the valleys with cliffs on both sides. Crossed a creek and about 100 meters later, arrived at a newly fallen tree, which was impassable. Turned around and a broken/splintered branch had punctured my front tire. As approaching the creek again, the watered had permeated the ground out about 20 feet. As I made the slight turn right, my front wheel peeled off the rim a bit and it threw me, bouncing and into the creek. The pain as excruciating. After about three hours, I had long given up hope of being found, three out of state riders came along. Life flight eventually found a place to land.was in intensive care for about two weeks…broke every rib on my right side w/punctured lung, shattered clavicle, broken right ankle and fractured T7 and T12 vertebrae. Worst experience of my life and I am retired Army Airborne/Air Assault. Raced MX from about 7 through my freshman year of college. Freak accident and I have nightmares of me lying in the creek and freezing to death. Not a scratch on my bike, guess that is a good thing…right? 🤔😠🤙

Ah, yes, the Devil's Punchbowl". Many 4x4's have met their fate there over the years. A Florida based new riding friend did this, but his bike somehow landed front wheel down in a shallow spot, water was up to the tank but not in the airbox. He managed to bail before the bike went and he didn't go over. A talented rider in our group managed to ride it out, the bike was barely damaged and he was able to ride it for the rest of the trip no problem. I had a nice cold beer waiting for him back at the truck, since then we've been brothers for life even though we only personally met on that one trip 😆 Have ridden through this are many times, it is actually easier to go a little fast through there as it gets the suspension to move instead of deflect. Rule #1 in Colorado mountain riding is always to fall into the hill if one is gonna fall 😂 Glad you are OK!

Been over that pass a half dozen times on my dirtbike. Last time had just returned to camp at the base and some guy walked into camp at sundown saying he just drove his 4X4 over the edge (like many others) and needed a ride back over to the Crested Butte side. Never resisting a opportunity to go ride I rode that thing with him on the back at night, dropped him off in Butte and road back to camp arriving around midnight. And why you never ride a dirtbike in Colorado without a strong headlamp. Great video, we've all been there unfortunately...

@@robw3761 Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't realize you asked a q. I love questions. I went down a treacherous decline, then got off trail. I've had more success hanging on, instead of dumping. So I hung on. But then my front wheel hit something, my bike stopped dead in its tracks, and I flew over the handle bars. In the many spills I've had over the years, I landed ok. But this time I landed flat on my back. I begged my bro in law to remove the rock out of my back and told him I couldn't feel my legs, as I was writhing in pain and gasping to breathe. Well, that wasn't a rock. It was my broken spine. But I must say, in many respects my life got better. I got married, and woke up to the important things. Would of those things happened anyway? I dunno. Maybe. But all is well. Thanks for asking!

I'm glad everything turned out okay for the new scuba diver! That rider was unbelievably fortunate when you consider the distance he traveled down and the immovable objects between the trail and the water that could have caused tremendous physical injury. After watching it a few times I'm getting the impression that the angle of rock to the righthand side is just enough to create a similar effect to that created by the angled concrete freeway dividers we're all familiar with. That divider was created to reduce the number of vehicles crossing into oncoming lanes. The angle is a sort of mild "V" shape, rotated 90°. It is designed to deflect a moving object from the ground upward where it then strikes the opposing angle of the concrete barricade, which doesn't prevent crashes in the same direction of travel, but it does reduce head on collisions. That same angular momentum seems to have pushed the dirtbike where it's rider had no plans to go.

Perhaps using clutch time after would help passing that section much easier and the bike wouldn't jump the way it did. Using clutch in these tricky and rocky section is a big advantage. Don't get me wrong but from the beginning of the video i can tell that you are not very experienced for such terrain :). Anyways, Thank God that you are alive, it's unbelievable that you are still alive 👍

Rick Hogge practice more in a wider area with the technical terrain. Clutch time or momentum, balance and looking ahead to sight your line in will help. I ride with momentum and line picking since you get beat up less. It helps skip over every little bump. Your body will get less fatigued on longer rides for sure.

When I was a kid my dad took me is his 1962 Jeep on the Devils Punch Bowl trail. Looks like it's not passable with a vehicle any longer due to the road looking to narrow. I do know that they blocked off the road next to CB mountain and it's only open to residents. We had one of those cabins.

I live in Colorado. The rocky mountains are very unforgiving on a dirtbike. Those sharp edge rocks will jolt your bike left or right and the suspension barely works right. I stick to the less rocky trails for this exact reason. The hill climb right before the crash made it worse. Probably going a little too fast for the conditions to make it up the hill, hit the sharp edged rocks causing a little blip of the throttle, then the rear suspension not absorbing it properly bouncing up and down causing no brakes and very little control of steering. Glad you made it out alive.
