WOW ❤🎉…thank you so much…my husband purchased a tool thing that looks like yours bc he got a great deal though we had no use for it…I’ve been eyeing it just sitting there empty in the garage and thinking about grabbing it for my sewing room…ypu just cinched the idea and I hadn’t thought of making the ironing station but I really. Pups use that…you are awesome.

I have the same ironing station. I bought a wool pressing mat on amazon that fit almost perfectly on top. I discovered that the mat cut very easily with a razor knife. I used the loop side of industrial strength velcro that is self stick. Put it on the wood top of the tool box on each corner and the mat stays put.

Michelle, you gave me an idea to improve my ironing station. I don’t have a place for bottles so they take up space on my Big Board; but while you were talking I realized I could put a shelf up on the wall over the board so they are out of the way. Thanks for the inspiration!

It is a good idea to put heavy duty aluminum foil between the first layer of batting and the plywood. It prevents steam from getting through to the plywood and can cause it to delaminate or warp.

I agree. I have used the foil too but I think the insulbrite she used will help with this.

Your quilting room and tools are always so organized! Thank you for this tutorial! I made an ironing board and placed it on an old tv stand that I bought on FB Marketplace, and then my husband put wheels on the bottom. I love it! My ironing board is getting warped so I am going to copy your method as I think your way is better. 😊

I love this. I have (2) Husky Tables, that are meant for a workshop, in my quilting room. One has drawers. But not as much as space as yours. This is the one I use for my ironing station. My 24 x 48 ironing board was made using a Jordan's Fabrics tutorial. And, like yours, I can remove it to use the table for somethng else. The 2nd table holds my 24 x 36 cutting mat. I use command strips to hold it in place. Both have lockable wheels and I can crank the top(s) to the height I desire. The best part is they are movable and, when I'm ironing a large quilt or binding a quilt, I push the 2 together for a large work surface. BUT, I don't have those great magnetic accessories. Where did you find them? I love that idea.

I used an old drafting table that I picked up at auction for a large ironing table. I have the room for it in the basement by my longarm. I covered it with foil first, then batting and I happened to have an old bolt of wool used for rug making so I covered the whole thing with wool. It is great for pressing tops before they go on the longarm and for pressing yardage. On my smaller ironing stations I cover them with muslin that can easily be washed or replaced.

What an awesome, great idea Michelle! My husband built me an ironing station - with wheels - a few years ago and like you. I feel it is one of the best features in my sewing room. If i did not akready have an ironing station, i would be already out n about to pick one up just like yours!! It would be the perfect christmas gift for any quilter. Love your ideas and as always, a very informative video!! Thank you.

I would suggest that 5/8 plywood v. 1/4" would provide a more stable surface (that will not warp and guaranteed to stay flat).

My tool box is a Yukon 9 drawer tool cabinet from Harbor Freight. It measures 18.25 x 46". Wes cut the top about 1/4" smaller on all sides and then I covered it. The plywood we used just recently started to warp so I would suggest using a thicker plywood. I don't know why it started to warp because I have been using it for quite some time.

You can always try! It might be inconvenient when you need something from your freezer….if the ironing surface is light and easily removed it might work.
