All those reactions in the comment section of people who don't understand how this truck combination works and why he jackknives his trailer. First of all, the first manouvre of the truck driver where he jackknives the trailer is because he wants to check the trailer lights at the end of his work day without leaving his cabin... No harm to the trailer intended and it isnt a fuck up in his reversing , he's well aware of what he's doing and this is not something you do daily. Second thing is. The middle axle of the trailer is lifted. That means the wheels don't touch the ground so the tires wont be harmed. The tires on the most rear axle are spinning independent from each other to avoid major wear when doing this. The trailer is even equiped with a extended drawbar. I'm from holland and these trucks and trailer chassis are made to do this because of the small farms/loading area's where these kind of trucks do their work. If needed these trucks can even do this while carying load.

Used to drive these drawbar rigs with demountable bodies. There was no need to jacknife the rig in the first Manouvre. He just needed to keep right on approach thru the gates then swing it left until the rig straightens up and reverse the trailer round to the loading area.

More of a joke/showoff thing, I’m sure he doesn’t do that every day he just shows off that he can control the trailer however he likes

I’m not a truck driver, but I used to drive a long Mercedes Sprinter van with various trailers on it, and when I wanted to check the lights at the back, and there happened to be a reflective surface nearby like windows on a garage door, or a vehicle with a dark paint job on it, I would just back up to that and use it as a mirror. But only if it was raining or something like that. The guy in the video may just have been showing off AND being lazy at the same time, but it did look like it took a couple of seconds less, than doing it the old fashioned way. 😄

In the commentary he basically said just for the poops and laughter he was going to check his lights from the drivers seat. In the real world it's a useful move in some really tight yards. Push the prime mover and trailer parallel to each other and load through the back of the prime mover and front of the trailer, best with light loads though as the wheels on the a frame will be along the trailer not under it.

In any case, even though this was a superfluous manoeuvre, (I'm convinced that this was motivated by 90% showing off, 8% laziness, and 2% his colleagues egging him on 😏) it is definitely a good idea to challenge and improve your skills in the art of reversing your 25.25 meter long rig into "impossibly narrow" places, in order to be ready for the sometimes not-so-rare occasions, where you find yourself backing down a narrow alleyway that is only 2 meters wider than the trailer, followed by a sharp bend into a loading bay that you can't see. (And there's no available spotter to help you.) Come to think of it, I really miss the challenge of reversing with trailers semi-blindly into narrow spaces. Especially with trailers that are so narrow, that it can't be seen from the cab when it's aligned with the van, or ones that are really short! 😌

To adjust the angle of the mirrors, he's looking at the rear wheel of the trailer to make sure it's not rolling. The first rear trailer axle is not rolling no matter what, because it's lifted.
