The danger is real when it comes to digging dumps. You never know what is lurking up in the cap layer. I have had s couple of close calls when digging. Definitely scary when a 1000+ pounds of dirt comes crashing down. It takes years of experience digging deep holes to learn the dangers that lurk around you. Stay safe my fellow diggers!

You boys make me want to get out in the woods and find me another bottle dump. Most of the oldest ones were picked over years ago. My home town goes back to 1657 and I now live in the next one over which was an extension of it but is now a separate town. It's age is just a few years after it. Im sure there are others that are on private land's that havent been touched yet. We have occupied houses that go back to the early 1700's and thosse are the ones I want to get permissions on. What do you do to find out the locations of the dumps you dig? Should I contact the town historian or is there another way so I don't have to bother him? What is a "hutch bottle I hear you referring too? Im in CT. and it is not a term that I have heard of before. I haven't dug in years and I look forward to it again because of you boys and your enthusiasm. Thanks for taking us along on your digs! By the way boys, try the kevlar or cut proof gloves. I bought myself 2 pairs. I do prefer the leather gloves if I can find the tight fitting ones. After a few times of wearing them, they stretch just enough to still be snug but not to tight to be uncomfortable.

Unless it is a reproduction, a purple glass bottle was made prior to 1913. Up until that year, glass makers put manganese in the mix of elements they used to make clear glass. Manganese causes glass, when exposed to sunlight, to turn purple. There are a lot of reproduction purple glass items, but those are mostly items such as kerosene lamps and decorative sugar bowls, creamers, etc ... The modern reproductions tend to be a darker purple than the "real McCoy" items. Also, I have yet to see a reproduction purple glass bittle.
