Today's video is a tie-up with the city of Izumi, Osaka Prefecture, which is known for its enthusiastic efforts in food education, in order to convey the "excellence of Japan's handmade school lunches"!
I've always been interested in how school lunches are prepared, and what school life is like for the elementary school students at corona vortex.
The video itself was completed in January 2021, but due to the number of people involved and the time of year, it took a lot of time before the video was released.
Now that we've decided to release it, I'm hoping that many people will watch it!
I'd love to hear everyone's honest comment.
Thanks always.

I'm Japanese, the workers who cooks school lunches are called "school lunch teachers" by the children. They are respected by the children. School lunch teachers are proud to prepare meals for their children, and children respect those who make school lunches as "teachers." They have a good relationship.😊

@BigOatGuy
@BigOatGuy 3 жыл бұрын
@@notavailableatthemoment7623 It's not bad because the food is bad, it's bad because one of its parts (cafeteria service) is completely lacking. As demonstrated in the video, this school, and I assume many others, have a cafeteria format that has been very thoughtfully implemented where children: Eat nutritional, balanced, and healthy meals Are instructed to participate in the dining preparation (bringing plates, trays, bowls, etc.) Practice food conservation Clean up before the meal and after having finished These things are essentially absent in any public school in America, resulting in children not having a proper education on how dining should be done. This does not necessarily mean that cafeteria service is the number one issue plaguing the education system, but there isn't a good reason why children should be denied the opportunity to practice good habits as shown. If anything, this video is a great demonstration of how things should be for all school systems.

I was in Japan decades ago. And I have a long time Japanese housemate. I was so impressed with how formal the relationship was between teachers and their students. The smallest kids, even in the US, can be eager and want to feel important. Which is why giving them little jobs to do at home and at school, is a very healthy thing for them. Unfortunately, here in the US, there are too many neglectful parents. The ones who are addicts, who are maybe just to distracted by having to work so much, leaves children too rudderless and schools burdened with doing what parents should be doing. I can't believe that our US society has so many immature, undisciplined ADULTS. It seems our society takes as much pride in being public slobs, as you'd think someone would be proud they take care of public spaces we all have to share.

@@regand7830 I taught high school in $27,500 per student Blue Cities that were mad houses with hall monitors wearing body armor and students cage-fighting in a circle of desks. Then had the chance to teach 4 months in SEAsia, students all 'normal' dressed, come to class _on time_ take their _assigned seats_, no bullying or cat-calling or molesting, put away their _cell phones_ open their _books_ and say 'Good morning teacher!' When I tell that story to US teachers, I can make them cry. When I tell that story to US students, they say, 'You were probably a crappy teacher (in US)'. When I tell that to my SEAsia students, they say 'How are you teacher? I hope you are OK!" Just a different culture.

@@ekonugrahaputra2317 I’m also a middle age Japanese, now American. I think this school lunch program started sometime during 60s-70s. Each prefecture has a different lunch program but Elementary school and Middle school mostly provide lunch to all students across Japan. Each city hires a team of nutritionists who create monthly menu schedule for each day. I believe my parents were paying about JPY 3000 ($30) a month for me. That’s about 30+years ago. Then high school is optional (non-mandatory) education in Japan so we had to bring our own lunch food, usually that’s bento box made by mom. By the time kids turn 3rd grade, they can tell what food they will get at lunch from the smell coming out of school kitchen. Weekly team of lunch server kids have to go pick up entire classmates food and serve in each classroom. The rest of classmates line up and carry own food to their desk. Teacher eats the same food in classroom with all students. No picky eaters are allowed to leave any food. They all have to finish every dish because the perfect nutrition balance is built in each meal. I remember a teacher in my elementary school was so strict. She would not allow a picky eater kid who would not finish some vegetables to go home until she eats it. 😂

After watching this I'm embarrassed. We whine about how poorly our kids are doing all the while feeding them processed crap in run down buildings. The next person that tells me, "It's all about the kids." is going to get sent a link to this vid. Thank you.

While my city is considered dangerous in California, our school district took our nutrition seriously and decided to create a kitchen for all the schools. I was very much in love with going to school because they had a salad bar and hot food. We also had several mini counters with snacks all over the school. We were soo over the packaged pizzas and mystery meats. Edit: just wanted to add a shoutout to our lunch teachers!!! They are amazing and we always thought of them as our second mothers. We recognize the hard work they do, from the mornings to afterschool

Our fat kids will not eat healthy foods unfortunately. They are used to the junk that's fed to them both at home and at school. Many of them would go hungry rather than eating their vegetables from their school lunch. Healthy eating habits begin at home and its a cultural issue.

In Singapore, a canteen usually has 10 stalls and at least two have to cater halal food (for Muslims). Japanese Students have more responsibilities maintaining school properties which decreases real estate fees schools have to invest in unlike any other European or North American schools that pay heavy coin for real estate. The students are disciplined and rewarded for this. its as if the school is their second home. Would north American or European students be comfortable to be on duty cleaning toilets and classrooms regularly to get his kind of service? I'm afraid not. A valuable asset we can learn from Japan, not just with the service they provide to their students.

This is a good example of how what you experience as a child can affect you as an adult. As anyone who has been to Japan knows, cleanliness and order in Japan are on another level. Even though there are no trash cans on the streets, there is no litter on the ground. Even the biggest entertainment districts are relatively clean. It would be nice to go to Africa and see wild animals. Or go to a southern country and see the emerald green sea. In that sense, Japan is not the best choice, but Japan also has abundant nature, the best public transportation system in the world, many historical buildings, safety for women walking on the streets at night, and kindness to help those in need. I have never heard anyone say they never want to go back because they don't speak English. If you want to feel another world and eat deliciouse food, go to Japan.

Here's the translation courtesy of ChatGPT. (Some corrections/editing made by me.) **** I am part of the staff that prepare lunch at a different school in Japan. The reason why the kids are eating quietly at their individual desks looking forward is because they are required to do so because of COVID-19. If it weren't for the pandemic, they could enjoy their meals in small groups, facing each other and chatting. It's really unfortunate now, but I think it's wonderful that they are following the rules. In Japanese school lunches, nutritionists consider the nutritional balance and prepare meals every day. They don't use artificial flavoring in miso soup or soup broth. They use ingredients like vegetables, dried fish, and beef bones to make the broth. They also accommodate children with allergies. When the children see me, they say, 'Thank you for always preparing our school lunches!", which makes me very happy.

If a restaurant fucks up with temperatures and makes bad food, they've made 1 person sick. If a catering kitchen fucks up with temperatures and makes bad food, they've made 200 kids sick. That is why catering kitchens are meticulous in quality control, compared to restaurants.

I would say these are cooked to the same standards as hospital food as children are considered 'vulnerable', immune system-wise. Some food-borne bacteria can also cause chronic illness, the school wouldn't want to have that tarnishing their reputation.
