People who don't bowl candlepins should appreciate how unbelievably difficult and rare this is - and for it to be on TV is even more unusual. I have bowled on 5-man teams where no one on either team bowls a strike for three games - decent bowlers, too. One time, a guy bowled 4 in a row and the entire bowling alley stopped to watch.

I've been down in this candlepin rabbit hole for a while now. I'm borderline obsessed with it lol. I've done traditional bowling for almost 40 years, and I'm decent at it, but I really want to try candlepin bowling. I know traditional bowling skills don't necessarily translate to candlepin bowling, I just want to do it because it looks like it'll be incredibly fun. One problem; I live in the south so, from what I've gathered, there's no candlepin centers anywhere around me. Maybe one day, if I find myself in the NE I'll absolutely give it a shot.

I played Candlepin Bowling when I was living in my home town, Halifax, and its definitely one of the hardest but most exciting Bowling variations to play. I presently live in Newfoundland where they have no Candlepin Bowling alleys, but just 5 Pin Bowling counterparts. Keep in mind that just because you have a high single of over 300 in 5 Pin Bowling doesn't mean you'll have a 200 game in Candlepin.

Years ago my wife and I were teamed up with Jim Woodsum on a team ( Each team had two amateur and one professio nal on it). It was 5 boxes at a time on that league. My wife and I had bowled first and then Jim goes up. Throws 5 strikes in a row. We just looked kind of dumbfounded and asked a guy on the other team to help us figure out how to add something something like that up! I think half the league came over to shake Jim's hand when he went to sit down. I can't remember what he hit for that string, but we never seen anyone bowl like that in our lives. He was a really nice guy on top of that as well.

My dad and I where in New Port in 1994, playing candlepin for the first time and I got two strikes in a row as a 14 year old and he then got 3 strikes in a row. Some people where watching us and told my father that they might see that once a month. We where 5 pin bowler's and at the time my dad was one of the best in Canada. I was as well as a youth bowler. The biggest difference is how light the balls are. to this day, that's the only time I played candlepin.

@@richkimberlygoss6057 Please explain how candlepin is harder then ten pin? I would love see what bullshit reason you come up with and absolutely destroy with the knowledge I have of actual bowling.
@vernonmcgraw66274 жыл бұрын
It’s harder because of the size of the ball & the spacing between the pins...nobody has ever thrown a 300 game...you can hit it perfectly in the pocket every time & strikes are never a guarantee because of the slim pins. The dead wood stays on the lane which sometimes helps to convert a spare but also sometimes gets in the way making a spare impossible. If you roll a 400 for 3 strings you had a great night, and a 500 is incredibly rare. Anything over a 125 average is exceptional and would likely be a top 10 average at minimum in any league. A 200 string is really big, the record is 245, last done almost 10 years ago. The guy who did it had an average around 125, and was known as one of the best around at the time, throws incredibly hard. That’s the big difference with tenpin, the power & precision required to hit those big scores with the small balls & slim pins make it so much more difficult. My fourth game of tenpin in my life I bowled a 160 including 3 strikes in a row to start. I never did either one playing years of candlepin regularly in a league & casually, I think my best string ever was around 125-130. So tell me again how tenpin is tougher? And have you played candlepin? 🙂
@barryparker40054 жыл бұрын
@@vernonmcgraw6627 You do know that I’m actual bowling you can hit the pocket perfectly, the ball is on 17 and a half board, the ball is done trying to hook and it has percessed, the ball is entering the pocket at a 5 degrees entry angle. Even with all of that, you can leave the hardest split in the game, the 7-10 split. In ten pin you have the oil pattern on the lane to bowl against. You are bowling against an invisible obstacle that changes after every shot thrown on the lane. You could throw one shot, it is dead flush and strikes. You could throw the next shot in the same place, same speed, same revs, same axis tilt and rotation, and it could go through the face and leave a Greek church. Also ten pin is like a guitar and a candlepin is like a bass guitar. Ten pin is way more complicated and way more difficult to learn, do and execute well. Where candle pin is just the bland boring version of a guitar. And if you can play a guitar well, you can play a bass extremely well. One last thing, how far apart are each pin in candlepin?
@vernonmcgraw66274 жыл бұрын
True, you can throw a “perfect” ball in tenpin & not get the desired result, but the fact that candlepins are only around 3” wide & the balls are about 4”, while each pin weighs about the same as the ball, makes it truly difficult. The fact that the deadwood remains on the lane enters in a different dynamic as well. The fact that there has never been a 300 in candlepin and the highest 3 string ever being 530 backs all of this up as well. The second time I ever bowled 10 pin, my 4th, 5th & 6th games, I bowled 160, 160 & 125 for a 445 triple. That would be close to a house record in many locations in candlepin, houses with decades of play. Call it luck if you want, but you won’t see anyone luck on not a 400 in candlepin. My best ever triple in candlepin, after years of play, didn’t top 350. I’m not for one minute saying 10 pin isn’t difficult, and that bowling a 300 game is easy...it takes a lot of skill and the stars have to align. But you won’t see someone throw a 445 in candlepin in their 2nd ever game like I did in tenpin, and the fact that the highest ever candlepin scores were 245 & 530 proves my case. Different skills are required in each game; power, accuracy & strategy in candlepin (strategy due to the deadwood), vs. form, technique & accuracy in tenpin, coupled with the issue of changing oil patterns that need to be reckoned with. Both are very difficult to achieve great success, but when every league in candlepin shows that a 130 average is elite, vs. what you would need to be elite in tenpin. Both games are exceedingly difficult, but the challenge is what makes it fun. Oh, and the pins are 12” apart, meaning you can put a ball between 2 pins in the same row, like the 9 & 10, or a deflected ball can go between rows...try that in tenpin, lol! Thanks for the discussion! Have you ever played candlepin?
