Besides a bright color, the #1 thing for a kids bike is to keep them lightweight. Imagine how little you want to ride something that weighs as much as you do. Modern Walmart kid's bikes are far too heavy because they use cheap steel with "aero" flattened tubing to look cool. That adds a TON of weight. My kid started out on a PVC push bike and then we always put him on round tubes for his first few kids bikes and it is the reason he loves bikes today - he could actually get somewhere.

I didn't know loud freehubs were desirable. When I hear sound from my bike I assume something is either going wrong or is sub optimal as presumably the sound being produced is a form of waste energy that isn't being used for movement. That said, the look of carbon spokes themselves feel kind of concerning to me someone that rides my bike casually in the city. I have actually snapped some metal spokes before and had them replaced, then had to have a wheel replaced on my non-road bike before.

Silent freehub? Well a noisy freehub is a serious road safety issue for me. It warns in the most gentle way the pedestrians and riders in front of me to be careful. And it flawlessly works. Using a bell often shocks people, they tend to jump and do unexpected moves that can can be dangerous. So no silent freehub for me.
@Frostbiker Жыл бұрын
Have you tried ringing your bell earlier? Another thing that works well is shifting down: the mechanical sound held you get noticed and you need to slow down around pedestrians anyway.

@@Frostbiker there is a lot of noise in an urban environment and I'm afraid shifting down is not loud enough. Of course you do mostly slow down. I am talking here of what works well for me after having several near accidents due to pedestrians moving in sudden random directions after hearing the bell. The difference between freehub and bell is that people take the noise of the freehub as a warning but calmly continue in the same direction, but if they hear the bell, they tend to panick and often move in unexpected ways.
