Amazing OP Map Positions - Sand River

GSOR in the first replay I think is the best one in this series so far. Demonstrating that a good light tank player that knows his tank, understands the mechanics, the map and the enemy lineup is the most dangerous tank in the game. Claus I think it would be great to have a 'Light tanks that carry with their gun' series at some point, and you could even go tier by tier, maybe tier 6 through tier 10.

Any other enemy would have countered him. Typically a medium tank would have move up way further than they did during this game. This is a 1 in a 1000 type of game.

Hey Claus - I agree with MS below; I'm a bit of a chicken when it comes to playing light tanks and would appreciate a good primer at multiple tiers. Also, a quick tip when it comes to calculating what I'll call "discounts', that is starting with a given value and determining a new value as a percentage of the original. Using your example: original value of 500 meters with a 30% concealment value (or "discount"). Instead of making two separate calculations: 500 m x 30% = 150 m; then 500 m (-) 150 m = 350 m, make one multiplication using the RECIPROCAL of the "discount" value. The RECIPROCAL is nothing more than the difference between the "discount" and 100 and most folks can do that in their head. So the RECIPROCAL of 30% is 70% ( and for 40% is 60%, 70% is 30%, etc). So now the single calculation is: 500 m x 0.70 (70%) = 350 m. Easy Pizzy.

When I first started WOT, I didn't understand the game mechanics at all. Scouting seemed very difficult and unyielding so, the easy way out was heavies. Scouting game play is very different and this OP Map Position series has really made me more interested in dusting off some unused little tanks.

I love the spotting mechanic/role of light tanks in WOT. WoTBlitz lights are basically to spot then run, because the maps aren’t large enough to get away with camping in a bush to spot.

if you look at the line-up for each game there were a huge number of TD's in both. My experience is that triangles tend to stay deep in more standard games on Sand River. Difficult for lites then. I guess that is why the GSOR went middle first because 80% of standard games that is the % spot for fire support. Two great games but where heavies/mediums move north particularly in Sand River encounter games can lites do much in the north?

Exactly. I play on console so it's a bit different. But I swear 80% of my games if I play a light there's 3-5. After 100 ish games( small sample size I know) I've never had games like this, or games with one light tank.

I think in the second game it is an unfair comparison to the first game. Clearly the light tank player was up against a much better team than the enemy in the first game which made the task for an active spotter much easier. In the second game you had players with better situational awareness and they were able to "box in" the light tank player. That makes relocating much more difficult to do. You are literally stuck because you know if you try to move away you will be back in the garage. Sometimes light tank players end up in situations like that and you have to bide your time and hope the enemy loses enough tanks to enable more freedom of movement. That's why is it important to stay alive and reach the end game where a light tank can be a game winner.

The numbers under the concealment pull-down are the percentages. Stationary%/firing while stationary% Moving%/firing while moving% For example: the concealment percentages for my T-54 is; 43.51/9.57 while stationary or moving (because its a light tank). That's effectively taking away 44% of the enemies view range stationary/moving, and only 10% while firing. These values are of course much worse on non-lights. AT-8; 20.01/5.15 stationary; 14.77/3.46 moving. Hope this helps!
