Amazing Packed Abandoned Mansion Turned Funeral Home In Florida *Everything Still Inside

This historic old Queen Anne Victorian style house was built in the late 1800’s. Built between 1870-1890 for the Sterling family a wealthy family who made there fortune in livestock after the civil war and settled around western Florida. After remaining in the same family for 50 some years it was sold during the Great Depression and turned into apartments. It would go through many owners over the years until finally becoming a funeral home in the late 80’s. It would remain a funeral home until the business moved in the early 2000’s. Now it’s set for demolition sadly. Glad to have it documented. Thanks for watching!

First home I purchased was built and owned by an Undertaker in the 1880’s. What was my dining room was the original viewing room. My youngest boy at the time kept running in my room at night saying the tall man in black was in the corner again . Sold it 2 yrs later😮

The first room you thought was the embalming room was were caskets were kept and families could view and purchase for loved ones. Truly amazing. Before the idea of funeral homes, people that died usually were presented in the front parlor of their homes for a day before burial in the family plot. I can remember when my Gramma died, her casket was in her front parlor for a day so her family and friends could pay last respects. Great old house Kappy, the woodwork was gorgeous. ❤❤

I remember, my grandparents home had three caskets in the house, grandfather and two of their grandchildren. That was the time in the 50/60’s for me. Remember having to have someone stand guard 24/7 for three days before the service and buried. Back then the blood was not drained out of the body and really the deceased could have been in a coma and not really dead before buried. I remember staying up one night with my grandfathers body and it was the scariest night ever and I was about 14 yrs at the time.

The container that you were wondering about in the embalming room( cylindrical shape) is what they use in the process of removing the blood and putting in the preservative in exchange. I had a good friend who was a funeral home director/embalmer.

yes, that's the embalming machine but they don't suck your blood out with it, it pumps the embalming fluid into your arteries and since it's pressurized, it effectively pushes your blood out of your veins and replaces most of the blood with the formaldehyde solution. funeral homes have weird energy but i think spirits seldom hang around them.

What a grand old house it was in its younger days. Most Victorian homes that were turned into funeral homes are set up similarly. We have many up North. The huge room is for the funeral services that can accommodate a large crowd. The first floor has lots of smaller rooms for reception, family room, bathroom and office. You are right... The upstairs is the owner's living quarters. The embalming room is sometimes in a separate building, converted garage behind the house or located in the basement. But Florida homes are not built with basements. You can't dig more than a foot down before you hit water. Thanks to Ruby too for her assistance and finding that eerie room. Great tour. ❤

You're right. My Grandmother was born in 1900 in the deep South and she would often tell me of how years ago when someone passed away they would have to keep the bodies on display in the house. I don't think they had funeral homes back then. Shortly they would bury them at the Cemetary.

She was the essence of Grand when she was built! Unfortunate, how it always seems grandeur is not sustainable in human society. Her very being characterized and projected the wealth and comfort of a successful family and did a fine job of it! Too bad, such things aren't valued in her future purposes. She still houses her spirits and her former grandeur isn't easily hidden, even as it was repurposed. Imagine life in her in her early 'flower' days, with those fireplaces, the turret, that stained glass... she was a looker!

Your videos have had such a huge influence in my life. I’m not overstating it. Your videos started me thinking about all my “stuff”. Without children to bequeath my treasures (valuable or not), I didn’t want to leave the things to an estate sale when the time comes. So, I simply started with two lists-one list are things just stored away, and the other list are things I want to bequeath. The things to be bequeathed caused me to really think about whether their value would be appreciated with sentimental value to those family members who receive those things. Perhaps those things would not be valued and just become part of an Estate Sale upon my passing. So I now have these two lists which have changed after pondering the items’ value including sentimental value and $$$ value. But that was just the start. I then researched selling some of the things via a garage sale. Well, that idea came to a swift end….too much effort and no monetary value, all things considered. So that lead me into researching selling online, which turned into a major project. Jewelry values, Marketplace, Craigslist, local FB groups, eBay, Etsy, Mercari, Poshmark…just to name a FEW! This lead to “Analysis Paralysis” (Google it). After so many steps all along the descent into the “rabbit hole”, I am ready to take action with my stuff; and finding better homes for all those items which would, otherwise, never see the light of day. Thank you for helping me care about my stuff, helping some of it find a new owner who will find value in it, and family members who will be the next caretaker of those heirloom items; some of which began with my great grandmother.

I can totally relate to your musings. Seeing the stuff of those before us, considered no better than trash and Really not valued as opposed to when it's our things, stamped by the investment of our own personal experiences and what that means to us in living memories... it all suddenly rewrites the meaning of 'having stuff.' Thank goodness for collectors when even the kin has no interest in the 'old stuff' of their heritage.

In the embalming room, that machine you wondered about was for taking blood out and putting embalming fluid in.

That was once a very lovely home and it also was a nice funeral home. Just remember the dead can’t hurt you, it’s the living you need to worry about. It was a little disappointing that there really wasn’t access to the tower but that seems to be the norm. If I had a tower I would want to be able to get in it. Good job on finding the embalming room, you knew there had to be one. Something else you should have found is the cooler. There had to be a refrigerated room there off of the embalming room. There was a door in the wall. Even with embalming you would need to keep the bodies cold until time for the viewing and service, especially in areas that are quite hot. I’m not sure if it would have drawers like the morgues you see on TV or just shelves or an area to park the gurneys. A girl I worked with years ago said she wanted to work at a funeral home, doing hair and makeup. She was extremely pretty and we all asked her why she wanted to do that. She told us it was because the customers wouldn’t be yelling at her and she hated when they did that. They all assumed she was just an airhead and treated her like she was stupid. Sad that she would feel that that was the only way to get treated right.

@elizabethgibbens I was thinking the same thing, there are salvage companies you can pay to come and take stuff if you don't want to do it. Then they sell the stuff. @Blackdogsalvage is in the Carolinas I think and they do this. I saw them on a show years ago, I think on HGTV. The glass knobs are antiques, the stained glass which is not made anymore in the USA supposedly. Ugh The metal could all be recycled and melted down for new stuff if it can't be sold

I There was even dandruff shampoo😬Seriously, I was trying to picture the beautiful house this once was, but being brought up going to wakes/funerals, this just flooded my mind with memories. What a beautiful home she must have been back in the day. All that wood unpainted must have been beautiful with the stained glass. I wonder which room downstairs would have been the original kitchen, and I wonder if they took out a wall for the chapel or if it was that long originally. So sad to see a lot of the chimneys just covered over, but it was exciting to see some of the tiling was still there in the upstairs. Awesome!

It would cost a boatload of money… but would be sooo very worth it to restore this grand old dame into the once gorgeous & pristine lady, that she once was!!! The painted original doors, windows, wainscoting, banisters need to be stripped of the layers of paint to the beautiful original hardwood that they once were & have a beautiful stain applied to protect the wood! The stained glass was phenomenal!!! My favorite by far!!! The chandeliers were original from the looks of it!!! Sooo very sad to see this old beauty be destroyed by the elements 😞😰😢 I’m sooo very glad to see that you had Ruby with you on this explore 👍 Thank you Kappy, for another wonderful explore!!! I love the look of this place. Reminds me of a friend's home growing up. Rooms were no where near the size of the ones in this place though. A lot of pretty woodwork. Hello, Kappy! This is a beautiful old house, but I wouldn't spend the night there! I still get the creeps thinking about that door that closed on its own that time. That dog howling does not make me feel one bit better! Sheesh! Hello, Ruby Girl! Kappy promised that you'd be making an appearance! You make me happy, with your courageous spirit and curious nature! You are named correctly, for you are a gem! It's impossible to know what the first floor of this house looked like originally. The house's interior has been altered drastically to accommodate the funeral home. I'll bet the folks who built this place would turn over in their graves (pun intended) to see what happened to their home. At least vandals haven't torn the place up or sprayed vulgarities all over the place. I hope they don't ever find this house. Clearly, the roof is failing or maybe the pipes are leaking. At any rate, the place is really suffering from being left alone. That stained glass surrounding the window is pretty, though. Hopefully someone will take out the furnishings, the pictures and the pretty windows before it is torn down. The millwork is well worth saving, too. The upstairs has definitely been altered, but not so much that the original shape of the rooms can't be at least guessed at. The fireplaces and their surrounds are lovely, definitely accurate period pieces. It does appear that people have been staying in here. Homeless folks rarely miss the chance to inhabit unguarded, unprotected dwelling places. Better them than me on this house. I'd rather sleep in a tree! That is a pretty mural on the wall. I'll bet this room is where they showcased the different caskets they had. That would make sense to have all those racks. Ruby could get a job on any police force! She's an amazing detective! I wouldn't have been as determined to find a place as gruesome as this! Just to think that one day, we will all lie on a table like that, eeek! I prefer cremation! It's sad, though, to think about the children and young people whose bodies were laid on that table, the empty shells of the spirits who had left for their final destination. It's creepy, but more sad than anything. Oh, there's that dog or whatever it's, howling again! It just adds to the eerie feeling that envelops that once proud home. It's a crying shame that this house is destined to be destroyed! I know that not every house can be saved, but it seems that one which is basically structurally sound could be preserved. Thanks for the explore, kids! You two are a great team! With Kappy at the helm and Ruby running reconnaissance, there's no way you could go wrong! Good on you both! I'm looking forward to some more interesting explores, so just keep on finding amazing houses for us, Kappy, but be safe! Take the lovely Ruby Girl along and you'll be alright! This house has the spooky vibe ..grand in some spots..on the other hand its decay and its past...brings out the vibe....this home is big and still after all its years shows a lot of its grand qualities...the stair case and its wood work...stained glass..fireplaces...with a twist of the unusual... .its funny how a houses mood its set by the past people that lived in it. My husband and I lived in a house in Albany Kentucky that was haunted. We lived there for a year and moved back to Oklahoma. We then moved to Welch Oklahoma and lived in a house that was across the street from the funeral home. They house was more haunted than the one in Kentucky. The door knobs would turn on there own and pull and close on their own. Plus the light bulb in the bathroom would come on even with the bulb almost all the way screwed out. It would go off while you were bathing. We moved really fast out of that house. Then we bought a house in Vinita Oklahoma that had one spirit in it and we just lived with it for four years. Sold it and now we have been living in the country and have been here for thirty years. We have spirits here too. They have followed me all my life. I don't get worried anymore. I guess I got used to it. I would love to live in this house if I were young again. Great video!

Beautiful house i love how the fireplaces are in the corners of the rooms and such big rooms and windows are beautiful especially the stain glass in the windows. I see so many funeral homes that are big, lovely Victorians. It is so sad that these beautiful houses are being used as funeral homes. They should have big, loving families living in them! Even a bed and breakfast would be better. My soul would rather see a family here.

From the outside this place is beautiful. Inside too, except for the low ceilings. Maybe it's just me but that first sofa looked like Lizzie Borden material. So much conflict from the original woodwork, and wall paper to the folding chairs. The ceilings were lowered, a few walls taken out, but the doors, the windows, the woodwork, and the fireplaces reveal what this house used to be. It was not meant to be a place of the dead. I like to think that those who lived there last should have the last word. A beautiful house; no graffiti, no vandalism, no real rot, what does the future hold for this home? I wish I could win the lotto...🏠🌞😸

Pretty old grand mansion at one time, can't say I would live there after it being a funeral home though. lol I did like the stain glass windows, those ceiling to floor drapes dividing the rooms, and the colorful tiles on the upstairs fire places. I can remember my great great grandma being on display in my grandma's living room..This was in January of 1971 and I was 4 years old..That was the first time me and my cousins had seen someone deceased..After the first intial shock we started to dare each other to touch her hand or something silly that little kids would do .I doubt this is common practice today but apparently it happened alot back in the day ..Awesome video

Great video! The large blue metal thing in the embalming room is a mechanical lift to pick the bodies up to do things like transfer them from the table into the casket

I LOVE that colored glass squares that ya sometimes see in that era of home. Omg. Had a cream colored couch EXACTLY LIKE THAT in 1994, sold it at an auction got $100 bucks! It’s so quiet because that carpet probably absorbs the sound! Makes me wonder what the hardwood floors look like
