Actually the pattern that you see is text and not object or shape. So to convert it to shape/object i just took one rectangle shape and intersected both letter and shape. Which gave me output as shape. I did it because shape can be used to fill images, merge two shape and change its structure.

Good morning. I am attempting this design right now but I'm having issues. On the video, once you copy and paste the splash of color, you add more of them as if you are using a brush and then you merge them choosing Union. When I do this, I am finding that all of the splashes of color are not selected. How do I ensure that I select all of them so that when I choose Union they are all combined?

Just use control + A to select everything.

I think 2010 doesn't support this. You need atleast 2013 or higher.
