Christian Huygens discovered spontaneous synchronisation when he was testing his new pendulum clock in 1665. He had two clocks hanging from a broom handle between two chairs, and he found after half an hour both clocks would sync up. When separated the synchrony stopped and their times drifted apart. Mechanical vibration was being passed through the broom handle between the clocks.

His plan was to hang two clocks from a heavy mass suspended from the mast so they wouldn’t be affected by the rolling of the ship. He was testing them while he was home sick, that’s why they were on the broom handle between the chairs, so he could watch them from his bed.

The metronome fail was the air hockey flotation. Should have been on the same rolling pipe platform. I bet it would have worked. Floating on the air allows a completely different movement, in all directions.
@glennosmond43066 ай бұрын
I just spotted that and looked here straight away. It appears to me that the platform and rolling tubes create a symmetrical assembly, but I don't know if it helps to see it that way. At a glance, the air table looks like it would allow the platform to constantly look for the path of least resistance, while the tubes at least constrained the movement along one axis. Not a physicist! but I would have first tried this air table at a smaller scale.

Boiling water in a microwave IS dangerous, but not from damaging the water or nutrients. It can superheat, and seem to explode. If you want to try this one, let the water cool, undisturbed, in the microwave. After a few hours, the water is as safe as before heating; maybe more safe if it was contaminated
@AjHxze-lx4jn6 ай бұрын
I was going to say the same thing! I’m surprised it wasn’t mentioned by Adam; it’s super dangerous to boil water in the microwave as it can flash boil and explode if it comes into contact with literally anything, best to leave inside to cool as you said, if intended for drinking water.. if you need to boil water use the stove, simple
@TestTest-eb8jr6 ай бұрын
@daxhopkins7312 Bullshit. As long as the boiling is done in an "open to atmosphere" no explosion will occur.

@@giedriusnesvarbu5268 Superheated water is a real thing. It's when water is above boiling temperature, but the forces in the water prevent it from turning into a gas - until it's agitated, like taking it out of a microwave. This mainly happens with distilled water, which is very pure. Pure water can also be superchilled, and may not freeze unless agitated.

5:32 my father once told me, that the superstition about food from microwave being unhealthy for some reason may stem from confusing two things: food that is heated in microwave and food that is "made to be heated in microwave" (like tv dinners or something). Basically, the food heated in microwave is as unhealthy as... The food you start with. Food specifically made for microwaves may be extremely processed and unhealthy. My cousin (we were kids back then) once said that microwaves "sterilize" food by killing all the positive elements/nutrients/or something.
@MrMarinus186 ай бұрын
Actually the problem with microwaves is specifically that they don't sterilize the food. Microwaves affect water but that means they can't heat food beyond 100 degrees. That means that food for a microwaves needs to be sterile already which means they put in a lot of unhealthy preservatives. If you have a slap of meat in a pan the pan is over 100 degrees and so kills the bacteria when it comes into contact with it. The meat itself is strongly bonded hydrocarbons that can support themselves for a while past 100 degrees which is part of why the meat changes color.

You know the same people that sell completely useless anti-radiation protections for devices and such, groups on facebook for such conspiracy adjacent beliefs is where I've personally seen these types of claims.
@JH-fk8ow6 ай бұрын
@@MrMarinus18 that is total nonsense. Microwave absolutely sterilizes food when you heat it properly, you only need to get 74c internal temperature to sterilize all foods... That is basic cooking knowledge, some things dont even need that high temp, for example you can safely eat fish that is cooked to 64c internal temp. Secondly microwaves also affect sugars and fats, just not as much as water, fatty foods like bacon can get over 100c temp in microwave.

21:55 That's because of the ball chain itself. The design doesn't allow the chain to go sideways or to wobble too much. That's why ball chain is used cause it doesn't as easily get entangled like normal chain does. Ball chain is limited in it's flex and so it forms the maximum arc it can. They don't really call that out. That the ball chain is limited in it's level of flex so it can't fold or wiggle like the traditional chain does.

That’s not the reasoning, Steve Mould made a series of videos talking about this exact thing and found out the cause. I recommend having a look. The going theory is that it works because each link acts as a stiff rod, and there’s a maximum angle each rod can bend relative to its neighbours

The nutrients from water is removed when boiling it regardless of if it’s from the stove or microwave. It depends on your soil quality. If your plants have high quality soil and fertiliser it’s not needed as much from water. But do the experiment over 6 months without adding fertiliser and see how you go. Also you should do a taste test. How does it taste compared to the other lettuces? This is the first time I’ve ever heard of people warning against microwaved water but my thought would be with the nutrients rather then the ‘microwaves’.

There is a waaaaay easier way of making bottle bombs. Dry ice is kinda expensive and hard to come by. But you can achieve the same with very diluted sulfuric or clorhidric acid (sold as a cleaning product in any supermarket) and aluminium foil. The acid reacts with the metal creating hydrogen with enough pressure to make it blow up. And has an extra of corrosive effect (i ruined a pair of shoes with it).

There is another way of doing that "stop time / reverse time" experiment with a stream of water drops without needing any cameras: All you need is a tap or hose of some kind to make the steady stream of water drops, and an adjustable frequency strobe light. This method requires doing the experiment at night (or in a windowless room), where you can turn all the other light sources off, so that the water drops are only illuminated by the strobe light. Then all you need to do is adjust the strobe frequency while watching the stream of water drops - once you get the frequency synchronised, you can produce the same optical illusions - stopping the drops entirely or making them seem to defy gravity by going backwards.

It won't have done anything more than boiling the water in a kettle or on/in the cooker would do. Boiling water kills whatever might be suspended in it. If you don't leave the water in a microwave long enough for it to actually boil then there's as much of a risk of microbes still being alive as if you took a pot of water off the stove or turned off a kettle before it was boiling. As shown in the footage, microwaves just boil water in a different way. There might be a little impact on the microbes from the water inside them also being heated, similar to a human being right next to a very powerful radio mast (like having climbed up to be holding onto the main transmission and receiving equipment) while it's active, but again that water within the microbe's cells would be heating up at the same rate as the whole container of water, although it might damage the cells at a slightly lower temperature than the water it's in will need to be at to kill it, but I wouldn't be sure on that. Just ensuring the water reaches 100 degrees Celsius will ensure it's safe to use once cooled again.
