I am in my mid-70s and am a very advanced amateur cook who has made potato soup for many years. Interestingly, the only differences between your recipe and mine are the use of golden potatoes and addition of sour cream near the end. Yesterday, I did it your way and must admit it was the BEST potato soup of my life! (I tasted the soup immediately before & after adding the sour cream and was amazed at the improvement!) My wife and two dear friends who joined us for lunch all raved about the soup as well. Thank you! Your approach to cooking and making videos is both easy going and easy to emulate. Kudos!

Garlic isn’t too difficult-just plant the cloves NOW so they can vernalize (have to go through the winter cold temps) and they’ll come up in the spring. You can use the scapes to make pesto too!

I used scapes in my pesto in the summer - amazing! We had wild garlic growing but our maple tree completely blocked the sun, so we dried the cloves and planted them about 3 weeks ago - and they're coming up - about three inches tall now. We're so excited about next spring to see how they do!

Garlic is no more a problem than onions. End of Oct first of Nov plant Each Clove Root end down about an inch cover and put 3 to 4 inches of leaves over to protect them over winter. Harvest around June. Talk about FLAVOR.

Rodney, thank you for starting this off... I rarely comment on videos, but I had to tell John how EASY garlic is , yes, just like onions are! John, I plant them now, end of Oct. and mine do not sprout, but they will in the spring (Pacific Northwest) and are ready similar to onion time. Garlic is one of my favorite crops to grow! Commercial garlic from out of the US is fumigated to death, yuck! Try this, you will love having your own garlic braids! :D

I haven't peeled a potato in at least a couple of years; the varieties available near me (not sure of their names) have the thinnest skin that they almost totally come off when you scrub them, and then whatever's left basically dissolves when you cook them. Excited to make this soup!

I've never peeled the skin of a potato. Just clean up the parts that need to be removed after giving them a 5 min soak then scrub them well. The best nutrients are in the skin.

My broccoli cheddar soup has broccoli, potatoes, carrots, chicken and cheddar cheese and heavy cream and seasonings, which definitely makes it a meal. I make my potato soup like you do, except I use garlic & onion powder and add peas to it because my mom always did that. I do freeze my Broccoli Cheddar soup in large muffin cups then baggies and it’d great for when I want a small cup of it. Haven’t tried that with my Potato Soup though.

I also agree that potatoes do not need to be peeled - just scrubbed! I put my soups in the oven at about 230 F for an hour or 2 (or in a crock pot) so I don't have to worry about them scorching, particularly important with those with milk in them. I do enjoy your channel!! Looking forward to more soup recipes!

Garlic is very easy to grow. You can use the leaves and the scapes ( mini garlic in the flower head). I freeze garlic cloves whole. I have had great success drying it. This year I also roasted garlic cloves then squeezed the cooked garlic out of skin, froze some in cubes and have a jar in the fridge to spread on bread, steak or add to other cooking.

I made this tonight. It was so delicious, and everyone in my family liked it! Yay! I'm not usually very good at following recipes exactly, so I substituted some of the potatoes for sweet white potato and cauliflower. I added some smoked paprika at your suggestion, and that was a great addition. On the table, for my family to help themselves with toppings was: a trio of three different types of grated cheese, spring onion, chorizo, bacon, and asparagus (it's Spring here in Australia). Definitely a keeper. Thank you!

This recipe is as close as to how the recipe of a friend from 50 years ago that I've made is. The only thing I do differently is use 5 lbs. of potato's, I never added any flour, I use 3 cans of evaporated milk, but I like using the cream like you did instead, I think I'll try. I put in the whole 16 oz. of sour cream, as I make a bigger batch and then I will drop in sticks of butter. Which I've used 1 stick, or 2 sticks or 3 sticks of butter as it just depends on how rich you want your soup. Then lastly, I use hamburger a couple of pounds for the meat. I know I know it looks horrible but tastes so good. But all the recipes I've looked at use bacon so I'm going to try next time adding in a bunch of bacon to my hamburger, just to add more flavor. I just love all your videos and am learning to cook all over again in my old age. Thank you very much Preppy Kitchen. May you and your family have a blessed Christmas and a wonderful Happy New Year!
