Somewhere on Earth - Bissagos Islands | Free Documentary
Somewhere on Earth - Brazil: • Amazing Quest: Stories...
Somewhere on Earth invites you to discover the Bijagos Islands, an isolated territory of Guinee Bissau, in West Africa. These sacred lands resemble a vast river delta.
Marcelinho is a traditional healer in Empincha, a village on the island of Carache. He learned the traditional medicine from his father and began to treat people in the northern islands with him. A few years ago Marcelinho received training in the fundamentals of modern western medicine from foreign doctors.
The island of Orango, in the far south, is a World Biosphere Reserve and the country’s first National Park. This is where Pedro lives. He’s a generous man, always on the lookout for stories because he’s the reporter of Okinka Pampa, Orango’s small radio station.
Quintino, on the island of Caravella, is preparing to undergo the most important phase of his life, the fanado, the highest initiation rite, which will open a mysterious, secret world to him.

Hey everyone, we’re doing a switcheroo. The sound issues on the previous documentary ‘Top 10 Secrets and Mysteries’ are being addressed therefore the documentary has gone offline. In the meantime, please enjoy a trip to the Bissagos Isles, off the West Coast of Africa. Thank you 🙏

The opportunity to see such a strong people and culture is a very satisfying experience. What an amazing culture! If I and others like me were to force ourselves and our world on them by stepping on the land, the result would be catastrophic. Having someone do a doc on their world is an amazing opportunity, without damaging the culture. Thank you for the video, and I hope people use it to experience this community instead of walking into that world and distorting its reality. Thanks again for the video!

Incredible as it may seem, the Bijagós were some of the first geography I was aware of while a child studying in Portugal; mostly because of the interesting delta configuration on the map.
