For those, who do not understand how thin this gun is: This gun was created for concealed carry, and one of the requirement for the future gun was a thickness of box of matches. Engineers succeeded and this tiny beast was created... My grandfather was a high-rank general in soviet era, and his private gun was PSM... I surely remember how positively he remarked this gun, especially its size and durability)))

One can achieve a similar effect with a .32 ACP handgun re-barrelled for .25 NAA. The 5.45mm×18mm performs very closely like the North American Arms loading, and the .25 NAA is available in the U.S.
@GeorgeThePineapple9 жыл бұрын
I didn't even think those exist in US. Interesting gun. There are several civilian modifications in Russia. Usually you can distinguish one's owner by a scratch on the thumb. PSM decocker at it's finest :)
@GeorgeThePineapple9 жыл бұрын
***** .25 version (known as IZH-75) was for export only and it was made both in 5.45x18 and .25 auto, bacause they've figured out that there is not a whole lot of original PSM ammunition out there. I see claims that those guns were actually exported "to the West", but I can't confirm that or deny. Stechkin is a truly a masterpiece of a handgun. Even with it's bulk, tiny old-fashioned sights and questionable grip. It works not that well with modern ammunition though... In Russia and former soviet republics stechkin has probably as much of a cultural influence as 1911 in US, so it is one of the most desired guns out there, especially in places where, as you have mentioned, "law is not so strong". Speaking of early XX century guns, all of those came from early 1920s and earlier, when private firearms wheren't prohibited. Pre-revolutionary Russia was full of steyrs, mausers, savages, colts... American made firearms were evaluated higher than european ones, but also a bit more expensive. Every officer of russian army back in days was proud to have his own gun, not an issued Nagant-1895. On civilian market automatic handguns were also in demand, most popular handgun, of course, was Browning M1900, aka Browning №1. C-96 was a must-have for any revolutionary red army officer, well, bacause it was one of the best guns to fire from a horseback :D And a cool-looking gun in general. Since then it became iconic in soviet films and literature. When soviet government decided to confiscate all the handguns from citizens, it was, if I remember correctly, at the middle stage of civil war, so no surprise why a lot of those where hidden back in days.

Larry, this pistol became available on the German market right after the re-unification of east and west Germany. At that time I didn't see any use for this gun especially as a hunter you were and are still today limited to possession of 2 handguns in Germany. It was available through Frankonia Jagd Würzburg for about 200 German Mark which would have been about 100 Euros in todays currency. The availability of ammunition at that time was already a big problem, another factor why I didn't buy the gun. Andreas

Yeah I think it was the GCA of 1968 which set materials and physical sizes for the imported guns. Government tried to disarm the non-affluent minorities and stop the flood of Saturday Night Specials from overseas. Kind of a 2 for 1 deal since it appealed to a senator in California who was being harassed by The Black Panthers for bad laws he wanted to pass. Also kept domestic firearms manufacturers safe from competition.

Considering how compact the 5.45x18mm cartridge is, and low pressure, I think if the Russians "boosted it" like they did with the 9x21mm (Gyurza) and even the 9x19mm (7N21 and 7N31 AP round) cartridges, we would have an excelent PDW cartridge to rival the 4.6x30mm or even the 5.7x28mm. There is a video in the "Forgotten Weapons" Channel, where the PSM is tested against a 3A Kevlar armor, and goes through, like it was butter. My point is if, in a so compact handgun the (low pressure)and without any specially build AP ammo, the 5.45x18mm round is capable of penetrating body armor, an overpressure version of it, with AP steel core and fired from a longer barrel can reach simmilar ballistics to well known PDW rounds and become their Russian equivalent. The main advantages are: it's lower recoil and more compact ammo, wich allow more accurate controlled burst and you can carry more ammo to sustain it. Also, by having a lighter, faster and more aerodynamic buller, there is better range and the bullet can mantain muzzle energy for much longer distances than the 9mm, and even the 7N31 bullet.
