The borax melts into a glass-like film on the metal. This prevents air from getting between the two pieces of metal you want to stick together. The problem with air is it has oxygen in it, this causes a very thin layer of oxidation. That oxidation prevents the metal from sticking... So borax saves the day, without it you need to build an air-tight container around the chain first

The last job I did before retiring 22 years ago, was replace a car shredder. The body was 3" thick steel and weighed 1,000,000 pounds. The solid drum that shreds the cars was 12' wide & 8' in diameter. It has 18 - 900 pound hammers spinning at 800RMP's. It runs so fast that it takes 3 men to load cars onto the conveyor as fast as they can. Running 24/7 it fills up a ship with scrap steel every 6 days. The 7,000HP electric motor uses 14,700 volts. The cost was $6,400,000. & took 6 weeks to finish. The assorted machines that accompanied the shredder were to separate the other parts of cars besides steel. The only thing NOT recycled was foam, cloth and carpet.

What kinda dye is thay black dye, I wonder??
@C-M-E3 ай бұрын
I'm sure it's been answered by now, but in case not, acid etching reveals the contrast of the different steels; high nickel (bright steel) vs carbon steel (the darkened steel). While the pattern is enjoyable, being right along the edge without designation, even with heat treatment, means you still have two differently performing steels with differing edge-holding capability. Arrangement of the good carbon steel along the cutting edge prior to consolidation of the layers is tricky and part of the art, and not many do the planning or forging techniques to get it right.

Whilst the film showed steel being added to the furnace, I think the man-hole covers were probably cast-iron, not cast-steel. Evidence: Knocking off the sprue with a hammer and the small chips coming off the lathes. Steel doesn't break easily and the swarf is usually in long lengths. Top movie though. What about showing us what happens to the aluminium wheels?
