its ironic, our great grandparents and some grandparents generation were desperate to escape the hard labor of farming and work and now the world is desperate to return back to nature and growing food.

I'm afraid their trees won't make it too long if they continue to raise crops this close to them, they should've left patches of grass just around the tree and made their beds in the rest of the space. That way they would still use the shade without putting the trees in danger.

Growing my own food, that is great. More small scale farmers along your line could employ millions, feed 10's of millions! Hey 3Sphere. The 'wildest' animals we have here on our farm are birds, flea beetles and other small critters. All deer are blocked by fences. We did struggle quite a lot in the beginning with Japanese beetle larvae. Through applications of beneficial nematodes and crop rotation we've been able to reduce their negative impact. Another big one is flea beetles. They're in insane numbers during late spring and throughout the whole summer. Insect netting and growing crops they don't like are our strategies in handling those! Hope that helps! Thanks for the kind words :)

@@TheDutchFarmer Thanks for the interesting reply! We have myriads of insects that come and go and change over time, hogs, deer, bears, racoon, possums, foxes, Mountain Lions, hawks and maybe even a chupacabra or two (Heh) and other things in the night when I don't see them! It's a war! But we're winning slowly but surely. Our chickens vanish if they're not enclosed at all times too! Cheers!

Hello, thanks for your amazing video. Your farm and your family are both so beautiful. I have questions about the trees : they do give the farm a stunning dimension, but how do they interact with the crops ? Don't they reduce the amount of sun the crops get ? Isn't that detrimental to the crops ? Also, what about the roots of the trees ? Don't they get in the way ,hen you work the soil ? I hope someone can enlighten me on this, I would really love to have trees shading my little "potager" here in Provence, but I always thought it was a big no-no... Now I'm curious!

Also, my personal garden do not have compost, its just natural nice soil. It's pure compost only, there's better to do. That's the old Jean Martin Fortier method, or what they do at the Bec Hellouin in Normandy. In France we do Maraîchage Sol Vivant, which is a permanent mulch (real mulch, IE straw or wood chips). It works better because you feed the soil rather than feed the plant. Compost doesn't improve the structure of your soil, it just feeds the plants. What does improve it is the small quantity of wood chips he puts in the walking paths, but he should put a lot more, and ON the vegetable rows, not between. Then you get huge yields, like at the Ferme de Cagnolle (see onions here : kzbin.info/www/bejne/aKnUgpmMaZ6UoNk and sweet potatoes : kzbin.info/www/bejne/j4mViY1upcp1nsk ) . You would never get those yields with pure compost. Plus pure compost, since it doesn't feed the soil, doesn't improve your resistance to diseases (something Charles Dowding is struggling with like till gardeners for examples, whereas he shouldn't if he used wood chips). Besides, composting organic matter is a wasteful process. By using the raw materials that make up compost instead, it is much less wasteful. A pile of compost on a concrete slab is mostly decomposed by bacteria, while a wood chip or any garden waste mulch is decomposed by bacteria, worms, mushrooms and other insects, it's much more efficient, less emission of CO2 and methane.

@@hectorbrown656 I take care of planting in a 1800 m² shared urban garden, so we get chipped old Christmas trees from the City (around 20 m3 every year) and they also give us some from landscape gardeners throughout the year. In France, landscape gardeners have to pay to get rid of branches or grasses they cut, at the local tip, so they'd rather give it to you for free. The City also gives us compost from local schools, but you can buy compost from local landfills, as nowadays it's illegal to burn your garden scraps in the backyard, you have to take it there, and they make compost out of it, sometimes wood chips as well. Depending on the location, it can be free or it can be 20-60 € per ton, it varies a lot. If you leave in the countryside, you can also collect autumn leaves from you neighbors and stuff, they'll rather give it to you than take it to the tip.

Bon travail mon ami, vraiment un beau jardin/petite ferme. Here in Australia we have had 10 40c plus days this and the tomatoes, zucchini and cucumber were cooking on the vines! I have tried growing vegies in my orchard but I found that during summer the trees were taking too much of the water and nutrients. The winter garden was abundant when the trees were dormant so I moved the main vegetables out into one of the river paddocks.. unfortunately often exposed to our harsh summer sun. Maybe your quick green cropping is the answer? By the way, I was talking to an elderly French market gardener near Angers in the Loire, and she said the perfectly balanced garden is one third vegetables, one third flowers and one third trees. And her tomatoes...sacre bleu!..it was like eating a tender steak. J'adore la France! Bon chance a vous et la famille.

I had the same idea of growing crops with trees spaced out sufficiently to allow crops to grow below.. so cool . Recently I came across turmeric vertical farm , now this ...I need to act fast before all my ideas in farming are already implemented 😄

I actually got that idea when I noticed my tomato plants growing in the terrace garden that gets too much sun and water produces good number of big tomatoes. But it's flavour and taste isn't so great . The one grown in the balcony gave tasty but few small ones cause it received too little sun . Then I thought maybe the reason most of the store bought tomatoes here in India are not so great . Then I got the idea that growing tomato plants with leguminous trees spaced scarcely in farms should help . So it's called forest farming .. I see .

Hey Mr. Moreno Hope you doing well. I have a question , if you don't mind to guide me a little bit. I have a 3/4 acre property back of my house in North Carolina. I want to start farming in my little area but I have many trees which gives me too much shadow. I mean too little hours sun. Also I don't want to cut 🎄🎄, maybe some. Well please, what can I do ? Congrats on your farming development.
@FarmersFriend
@FarmersFriend 2 жыл бұрын
I think one of the key's to Moreno's success is the fact that most of the trees on/in his farm are smaller fruit tress that don't have extremely thick foliage. Trying to grow under the shade of a large oak tree, for example, would definitely slow the plants growth down. I think the best thing to do might be to try leaving the trees for your first year and see how it does. Plant the cool loving crops closer to the tree as they'll probably handle the shade better. Hope that helps!
