Plymouth sold way better than Dodge did. The Dodge full size cars didn't sell very well because they had too much competition from Chrysler and Plymouth. That was the same reason why DeSoto was discontinued in 1961. Monaco sedans were rare enough but I can't remember seeing a wagon like this one.

Gotta love the cigarette window. Nobody does this anymore, and pity: it maintains the lions share of usable window space while squaring up the window track a bit - keeps it simple and easy to repair. That and drip rails are two of my most missed small details car designers have simply forgotten about.

We had a '72 Town & Country wagon when I was a kid. I remember we got it used in like '78 with probably 40k miles on it and dad paid $1,800 for it. It was the first car we ever had with A/C and all the goodies. Such a beast, and so comfortable on road trips. A lot of good memories in that big ole wagon. I laughed when you mentioned ticking sounds in the 440. I distinctly remember ours made a ticking sound when it was under a moderate load. Could have just been pinging from cheap gas and high altitude, but it always seemed like a Chrysler big block thing.

@@LongIslandMoparswith an overdrive, this car can do it. Remember, the police versions of these C bodies in these years could crack 150 mph with the 440 performance package. Although with the soft floaty suspension these non police spec versions have, that could be a bit un nerving. But with good tires and shocks, 120 to 130 is doable. I grew up during the fuselage era - my dad bought four Plymouth Sport Suburbans new (1968, 1970, 1972 and 1975) the 70 and 72 models were of the fuselage styling era - this Dodge is absolutely gorgeous - the only missing option is factory Airtemp dual air conditioning - curiously according to the dealer option ordering literature the Superlite was not available with dual air conditioning (which made absolutely no sense to me initially until I noticed the Superlite instrument panel switch is in the same location as where the dual air conditioning switch would be located if this wagon were so equipped - presumably due to lack of switch space on the instrument panel) the correct term for the rear “grab handles was “tailgate assist handles” a $19 option at the time - these handles were a Chrysler Corporation exclusive option on certain Chrysler, Dodge and Plymouth wagons from 1960 through 1977 - additionally the windshield/tailgate window washer switch operates both the front and rear systems (I recently saw an entire internal rear washer system for these wagons for sale on ebay) the chrome tailgate filler cap removes to refill the rear washer reservoir

Beautiful. I still have a preference for the Plymouth Custom and Sport Suburban wagons (ours was a '69 Custom Suburban 6-seater in blue with a 383-2V). The Dodge does look lower but I think in part that is from the front end treatment; Dodge did a couple of years with headlights appearing lower on the grill relative to the fender tops and it really makes the cars appear to hug the ground more than the Plymouth. Someday I hope to have one again but until then its great to see one getting fixed up and loved.

Nice. I'd love to have this. I'm old enough to remember when they could be found in the parking lot of our country club (which was the bargain basement variety, so a Monaco was pretty special). Green was actually rather popular. Interestingly, Chrysler moved almost 5x as many Town and Countrys as this Monaco wagon, even though they were considerably more expensive. Up to the 74 redesign I always found the Monacos pretty impressive but they were totally clobbered by perhaps its nearest GM rival, the uber successful Bonneville.

I had a '72 Charger Rallye with a 440 and 4 speed in darker F7 or F8 green. I still own a '71 GTX 440 6bbl with Air Grabber, Super Track Pack, AM/FM stereo w/Tape, bench seat w/center arm rest, Tach, hood pins, Driver Aid Package, Rallye wheels, sticker price totaled well over $5000. And it's green inside and out. I've owned and taken apart hundreds of those cars, mostly boring colors, but I did have some H.I.P. colored ones.

Definitely a high-optioned Dodge. That "super beam" light was installed on less than 5% of the full size Dodges.

And apparently discontinued mid run in ‘70 because it was made illegal.

Which AVS2 is on that 440, 650 or 800 CFM? I'm trying to decide on one or the other for my mild 440 build. .020 over, 452 heads, MC 1787 cam with .420/.443 lift.

Recently put a 650 on mine. I think 800 was the right choice. 😢 Works, but I'm pretty sure it's suffocating things over 4k

This is a 650. This thing is super stock and will never turn high RPM. The 440 has enough inches to take advantage of the 800 at really high RPM, so that might be a thought for you, but the 650 will give great throttle response and make excellent torque.

Isn't Monaco the deluxe trim package for a Polara? In my local junkyard, there's monaco with a 440. Even has 440 emblem

It’s a stand alone model - at least in ‘70. As much as they shuffled model names around, it wouldn’t surprise me if that were the case in some years.

"and this battleship...." 😃Handles by the rear door on both sides no less, most excellent. I still have a soft spot for grocery getters as I was a wee one in the 1970's and every family had one at some point - we had a gm though, whatever it was. I mean, how else were you supposed to bring your new room paneling home from K Mart ?
