Staking that bearing race would be like EVERYTHING I DO. If you want that race to stay, it won't. If you wanted it to spin it wouldn't. If I paint something the paint doesn't stick. If I over-spray something it will NEVER come off. If I Loctite it it will never hold unless I WANT it apart....then it's permanent. It just goes on and on and on and......

Been doing a lot of air brake installations on the rigs at work. The Meritor axles are very similar to the Dana 60 in respect to the disassembly, at least on the outer hubs, which is as far as we had to go. The cone spacers were hitting me as I banged em out with the hammer. Good times. And I feel your pain with the door and window seals. Had to do that on the PW and the passenger window yanks it out every time. It now hangs there like a limp noodle. Oh well. Another great vid.

Patinaed means having or covered with a patina. A patina is a natural or artificial film that forms on a surface, such as a metal, and can be valued for its color. The word patina comes from the Italian word patina, which means "shallow layer of deposit on a surface". Patina can also refer to the appearance of something that has become beautiful through age or use. For example, you might describe an antique table as having a beautiful patina. The chemical process by which a patina forms is called patination. A work of art that has been coated with a patina is said to be patinated. Here are some examples of patinaed in a sentence: "It was patinaed with drawings of genitalia that had been scratched into the paint". "The license plated patinaed with mud". "She wore rubber boots patinaed with mud".

This video made me rethink my life choices. '80 W150 Powerwagon Clubcab, longbox. 360, 4bbl with the 4 spd. Bare bones, only options are dual fuel tanks and cargo lamp. Already swapped in a Dana 60, 4.10 rear axle, brother kinda pissed me off by selling the Dana 60 king pin front axle and NP 205 transfercase. It's dark brown with tan mid body. Got all the parts to convert it to bird bath hood, early style hood latch and cowl cover, and wiper assembly. It's been a love hate relationship with this truck since I first got it in "02. It needs door and window seals, rear upper wheel arches, 360 needs a rebuild. Some how I got attached to this turd.

Rockwell axles on big trucks used those cones for decades, our 1995 model with 46-160’s is the first one without them I’ve ever worked on, they just use a regular nut and washer on the studs, but our old trucks with SQHD’s, SSHD’s and SUHD’s from the 60’s to the 80’s have all used the cones on a studs. The idea behind using studs instead of bolts at the axle flange to hub interface was to avoid messing up / pulling out the threads in the holes in the cast hubs after repeated removals of the axle shafts. On class 6-8 trucks especially where the rear brakes do most of the work, pretty much the exact opposite of a pickup, and back when they still used inboard brake drums this was a real issue because any time the brakes needed new shoes and / or drums installed, the axles had to come out. On a class 8 vocational truck that’s several times each year. These days with outboard drums (or discs) being the norm, it’s not near as much of an issue.

Yea the green sleeve retainer (also sold as bearing mount) is the move on that one. Also noticed the carrier bearings had eaten into the sides of the bearing saddles..... It's a Dana 60 thing. I made a tool to reface those many years ago, 'cause it ends up with the surfaces non-parallell and the new bearings run cocked, dramatically shortening their life. If you work on these rears a lot, you can buy a refacing tool. I have seen a few with the loose pinion bearing race, and I think it's actually from the fact that some of these were BARELY a press fit right from the factory, and the bearing started moving and presto, a slide in fit. I've always had great results with the green stuff, it's a good fix.
@DeadDodgeGarage9 күн бұрын
So I’ve heard on the green stuff. Good to know for next time. I’ve only done one 70 before this 60, and the race fit as expected. That was also a 20+ year newer housing.

I just got done rebuilding the Dana 60 front in my 2nd gen, my original plan was to re use original shims with new bearings. That didn't work, had to completely re-shim the carrier shims. Mine had way to much carrier bearing preload with the old shims, pinion depth was alright with original shims. The second gen front 60s use a crush sleeve, that is fun to get started moving, takes about 320 ft lb to do it. I made my own case spreader for that job, now I have it for future dana rebuilds.

A friend used to work at a ford dealership as a mechanic. He did a brake job on a F250. Full floating rear axle. When he was putting everything back together his practice was to just dip the bearings in gear oil. The owner picks the truck up, goes home, puts his 10' camper on, hooks up his boat and then hit the highway. I don't remember the exact mileage, but he didn't get super far before one of the rear wheels locked up! It ruined the housing. The wheel bearings on a full floating axle get diff lube from the vehicle making turns. After that I ALWAYS take the 5 minutes and just pack the bearings.
@DeadDodgeGarage9 күн бұрын
Grease and gear oil don’t mix. They turn into an awful mess. You really don’t want to use them together. There should have been enough oil in that housing to do the job. One has to wonder what the adjustment procedure looked like…

the peening trick has been around probably longer than bearings. Seen/done it to everything from mowers to race cars. However that is the first time ive seen someone peen the housing as opposed the outer race. Its much easier because you can basically knurl the outer race and its a little safer because that is the replaceable part. Also as others have said, this is the one instance where liberal usage of retaining compound is acceptable. Got er back on the road though

The Dana 60 shims normally go behind the bearing races, while in a 12 bolt Chevy the shims normally go behind the bearings. I have used Dana shims behind bearing races in 12 bolt Chevy rears though. I don't think the Chevy bearing shims will go behind the pinion bearing race, due to the tabs on them, but the Dana shims fit. My neighbor has a Superbird that had 3.54 gears and he asked me to install 4.10 gears in its Dana 60.

Interesting the Dana 60 is such a tight fit. The GM rears use shims to get the tight fit. I spent many minutes getting the shims just right on my unique Oldsmobile 8.5" rear fitting the $750 Yukon posi. Even the races were bastards to get in and out. I always measure pinion depth then compare and whatever gears I am swapping and shim accordingly. Somehow I used perfect impact torque with the crush sleeve. I am surprised it isn't a posi in that truck. Interesting to see how the different differentials are assembled.

@Jamie, what's weird is on GM the OEM door seals glue on and the Amazon ones have the pinch style. The Dana's must be different per manufacturers because the Ford Dana 60's thru Dana 80's just use bolts on the axle flanges and so do the GMC's. On that truck, if he's going to tow no money for a locker? Yukon has a few cheaper versions.

When I first joined the Army, we were "coding out" these "mid-seventies" Dodge trucks... They were called M880's... They were being replaced by Chevys that were referred to as CUCV's... The Dodges were absolute dogs compared to the Chevys... The Dodges had 318's in them... They were regular cabs with non-power steering also... The Air force had the SWEET crew cabs with the short bed... They also had power steering with 360's in them... I always wanted to get one at an auction, but never did... This would have been and AWESOME truck to take to the field back when I was in the Army... We could have just slept in back instead of using shelter halves and ponchos... And that 440 probably would have given that Chevy Diesel a run for its money, I recon... Cool truck!
@DeadDodgeGarage8 күн бұрын
Yep. I’ve seen a few M880s on the market but I’ve never touched one yet. And I’ve seen a good few of those Air Force crew cabs. They must’ve bought a million of them.
@BawbEedie7 күн бұрын
@@DeadDodgeGarage The M880's would have been a much better truck if they would have put a 360 in them and power steering... But the military contract for them was more concerned with "fuel economy" and a price point... They had the same Dana 60 axles and the 727 Torqueflite Transmissions... Also the problem with the M880's is that if you got a "tactical one" instead of ones like the Air Force had, the wiring was a disaster to work on... They used the same wanky light switch that was used in everything from the M151 Jeeps to the modern day HumVee's... If you ever do "touch one"... Buy a "civilianized" replacement harness to save yourself a lot of grief...
