This band is so underrated it's honestly ridiculous. Daniel Johns is a legit creative genius and it's always bugged me how my fellow Americans never followed them beyond the song Tomorrow. Literally any song from this band is worth checking out. All of their albums are flawless....they didn't make a bad album. But Diorama is the essential one imo. And Daniel brought in Van Dyke Parks(yes that one) to orchestrate several songs. In a 'making of' doc on the Diorama album VDP said of Daniel...that he's the most musically gifted person he's ever worked with who isn't Brian Wilson. That says a lot....and he's not wrong. Daniel is someone I'll defend to my grave....the guy is a musical genius and more people need to go back and appreciate his work. The band itself is also insane....the 3 of them live is just bananas. Super powerful, so tight, so organic, and so in control of their craft....that they can easily go into weird freeform funky jams at the drop of a hat. Ben Gilles was an amazing dummer for Daniel to play off of. Can you tell I'm a fan? I'll stop now....I could gush forever about Silverchair.

Daniel is SO under appreciated for his talents. Not just his vocals as he was also the main composer for many of their songs from beginning to end. So many bailed on Silverchair - and Daniel - when their sound changed, and “fans” couldn’t accept their growth as a positive. Truly masterful in music.

He hasn't gotten _nearly_ the recognition he deserves. But hopefully there's more people doing a retrospective analysis of just how amazing him and his band truly was. Another comment. Thanks for covering him. He really does NOT get the due he’s been deserved for all these years. This guy was my de facto vocal instructor. Incredible musician, vocalist, lyricist, and writer. A league of his own. And throws theory to the wind in later work (like diorama) One of a kind.

Daniel Johns has always been so incredibly underrated. It's heartbreaking to hear of the battle's he's endured. Music is so therapeutic. I hope that he finds the healing he needs. As a vocalist ' Tomorrow' was one of the first songs I covered. I recall one of my music teachers speaking about how well he was able to endure despite the birth of autotune and his disdain for it. Incredible individual. Musical genius. Profound amounts of blessings to him and all the Silverchair crew.

INSTANT sub!!! I'm from Aus, Daniel is my absolute FAVOURITE artist. Silverchair is my teens, especially since I learned guitar with many of his songs.... but Tuna in the Brine is my ALL. TIME. FAVOURITE. Tuna in the Brine's musical/vocal journey just instantly made sense to me the first time I ever heard it and the lyrics have been etched on my heart from the first listen. "The light in my darkest hour, is fear...." This told me something I never knew about myself when I absolutely needed to know it in my 20s, and has never left me. All I can say thank you thank you for doing this comparison! I was a grunge girl no question and love Daniels heavy stuff always but MAN was I ever blown away with diorama and forever it's been an absolute masterpiece and remains their best work today. Daniel has always been masterful with riffs both on guitars and special runs vocally. Beautiful 😍 He's just released a new solo album called FutureNever which also has a Van Dyke Parkes collab who helped do the orchestral arrangements on diorama 👌

The pinnacle of Daniel Johns' vocal aggressiveness can be heard in Spawn and Anthem For The Year 2000. I don't think he ever screamed like that again. Some of the shows where Silverchair did "Spawn" were intense. He sounded like his soul was trying to climb out of him.

I'd have killed to see them back then. Or mostly....during the Diorama tours, after he got over his illness. Those shows were insane.... The Big Day Out show, the last one they did before Daniel got the arthritis, might be the most powerful show I've ever seen from them. I was lucky enough to see them during the YM tour in 2008 or so....in Atlanta....and it was such an incredible night. It was super cool to be surrounded by a bunch of fellow Americans who, like me, were obsessed with the genius of a band that barely any other Americans cared about....or even knew about.

I went to the Diorama tour in Brisbane in 2003. Was absolutely incredible. The way they had 2 parts to the show, with an interval in between. one of the most special male vocalists in the rock and pop world alive today. It's a shame he doesn't get the credit and recognition outside of Australia as is deserved. Feel fortunate that i DID benefit from that however on the final Silverchair Young Modern tour in the US being basically a club tour and getting to see them in that environment at their peak of musicianship and ability as a band. Still in the top 2 live vocal performance's i've ever seen. Looking forward to your follow up video of his voice in the more modern era. there are few that have leveled up year by year than him.

I read an interview in Circus or Hit Parade around 1996, and someone made a comment about Daniel's ability to create "harmonic distortion" with his voice. They described it as something that when his voice broke up a bit, there are overtones that add an essence of harmony even with his single voice track. I've never seen this referenced anywhere else but I think about it all the time and wonder if this is an actual term in vocal music?

Daniel isn't like other artists he is constantly evolving his artistic approach to every album . It's not that his voice changed its that he is constantly trying to get out of the box the world trys to fit him in . Every single album has a fresh new approach . The thing about Daniel is the world tries to compare and fit him into a box. Comparing him to nirvana has always been a NARROW perspective . There is more sabbath and zeppelin then anything but also pearl jam and Brian Wilson . He has his own formula to represent himself . He has never been a carbon copy of any comparison. I appreciate him as a artists and set him apart from the product they tried to manufacture him as .

Wow. Thanks so much for this video. I'm only now discovering Daniel Johns even though I've always been intrigued. I haven't deep-dived his career before now. Triggered by the release of Chris & Ben's book, started exploring all the info out there.. and there's a lot. Its just so beyond obvious that Daniel is a profoundly gifted musical & artistic mind from a very young age. Its only as he's grown into adulthood and early wisdom that he's realised how different he is to the standard issue. No wonder he feels compelled to keep evolving, pushing, exploring, and challenging himself. He only has this life-time to pursue this as vehemently as he can. Doesn't surprise me at all that he has left many fans in his wake, but that's not where his life's work is...he can't stay that limited. Would be like caging him. Hence the anorexia and then reactive arthritis. Thank goodness he made his way through all that. Listening to his pure voice, his phrasing, his tone, his perfection with pitch, paired with his genius songwriting. I'm so spellbound its hard to do anything else at the moment. Just want more.

I'm so glad to see something of this underrated talent that is Daniel Johns... I love your analysis and I recommend you another incredible and underrated singer TAKA of ONE OK ROCK.

Daniel John's has a brilliant voice and talent that has always been WAY under-appreciated! So, I was very excited to see your vocal analysis. I hope he watches this (though he likely won't since he tries to stay away for his mental health). He needs to know there are people who understand his talents, skills, and what he brings to the world! You now have a new subscriber! Looking forward to seeing who else you analyze! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👍🏽😆😃

Daniel is probably the most underrated and underappreciated musical genius there ever was. Thank you for showing people what an incredible talent and gift he is.

Awesome analisys, Daniel Johns is my favourite singer since ever, I love and admire him a lot, and I've notice his voice's change. It would be cool if you used the song Cemetery or Shade, they're from Frogstomp and you can see some "beggining" from what would he become now! Good vídeo!

Gosh I hate to admit but I'm definitely a DJ fanatic. Mostly cz of the way he embodies artistry and talent, it literally oozes out of the guy. His voice is absolutely beautiful.

Silverchair first went into this different musical direction when they made their song Untitled for the Godzilla soundtrack BTW. There were a few songs in Freak Show that hinted at things to come but Untitled is the first song they made that made it clear they were going in a very more elegant direction.

Daniel for sure is one of my favourite singers. Silverchair's era is amazing, his songs perfectly describe the suffering and soul's cruching from grunge movement. Emotional sickness is the description of living with depression, and his voice in this song, the way he sings it, is what defines this feeling. So here we have Daniel John solo era and I see a lot of people saying horrible thinks just because he is ok now and tried to go away from that darkest past, but what he do with his voice in Aerial Love and Cool on Fire is pure art

I think that we all fall in love with each era of Dan and therefore mourn the past but get equally excited for the new. More people should celebrate his evolution but it’s understandable that we always want more of what we love!

Great video. As an Aussie myself, I love hearing the singing isolated and how it emphasises how his singing went from emulating American to sounding like an Aussie. Don’t get me wrong, I was a fan of tomorrow when it came out but it really was just a good grunge song.

If you really want to compare and contrast Daniel John’s vocals check out his 2015 “Talk” album. There aren’t many post-grunge artists brave enough to make a guitar-less electronica album without their steady rock band to fall back on.
