No one seems to mention the full on power of the message of the song and more than ever its nothing to smile about given what we are doing to our plant and its affecting all countries and cultures across the earth not tomorrow or in twenty years but right here and now. "When the Levee Breaks" is a country blues song written and first recorded by Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe McCoy in 1929. The lyrics reflect experiences during the upheaval caused by the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927. Citizens of earth Wake Up

I’ve always maintained, since first hearing “ Levee” when released, all those years ago, that this Zeppelin reworking of the original piece should remain untouched, for all time. It’s a pinnacle achievement for the group, with an important back story about the Great Flood along the Mississippi River in 1927. This event sent the Federal Gov. into high gear, bringing the Army Corp of Engineers in to establish a Fed. Levee System to control the River. Until now I could never imagine anyone capturing this spirit or intensity of a die that had been cast. I was wrong! To all the remarkable artists here, Bravo! A special shout out to Derick and Susan. Her vocal was spiritual. Lastly, the legend that is John Paul Jones, adding your talents is the credibility this version needed, and deserves. Let’s all remember the charitable reason for the cover, a most worthy cause.

So lovely to see you "kids" appreciate this song. I'm 68 years old and was 15 when I first heard it after bringing Zeppelin's album home from the record store (which I still have). Originally inspired by The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 and composed by two African-American blues musicians, Leppelin's rendition was a tribute to those artists. Most people don't understand that this cover by John Paul Jones and Company, and the accompanying video, is to bring attention to Climate Change and how quickly a single weather event can alter our homes and lives. That was the point of the original song: one day the Sun is shining and life is wonderful; then nature comes along and has the final say in so many people's fates. All they can do is sit down and cry. They know their lives will never be the same. Now we are witnessing these occurrences on an unimaginable scale almost daily. Metaphorically speaking, the levees are breaking all over the world, and it may be too late to stop these catastrophes.

When you asked “who is this woman”, that’s Susan Tedeschi. Her husband, Derek Trucks, was playing slide guitar in this video. So you NEED to start looking at their band, Tedeschi Trucks Band. Her voice is dynamic and he’s one of the greatest living guitar players right now.

Realize I am late to catch this. but you nailed when you brought up sharing the various cultures. I pray daily that we all could learn to cherish and share all our various cultures and never lose the beauty of all of them. Be as one by loving the differences in all of us.

Hope you get a chance soon to check out some of the other "Playing for Change" videos. So many great ones out there. And Susan Tedeschi ( Te-desk-key ) along with her husband, Derek Trucks ( Long haired dude with a solo near the end) You have to check their video for Midnight in Harlem, as well as Angel From Montgomery. They're fire! Heck, their own band is pretty multi-cultural itself!

Bless you guys for promoting PFC and their cause. I have followed them for 2 or 3 years and every time I listen to the music on their videos and the singers from countries I have never heard of before, it makes me cry. Just witnessing the fact that we all have this one heartbeat inside of us and we're all the same. It is such a beautiful thing. It's nice hearing the kiddos in the background. Thank you so much for your reaction, guys. Take care and be well. Peace.

Love you guys! I grew up with Led Zep, saw them live in 1977. This all might have been passed on, but, if not, JP Jones was also the one playing mandolin when you hear it in songs like Going to California, Hey Hey, What Can I Do, etc. And all of these years I thought When The Levee Breaks was a original Zep song, and just recently discovered Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe McCoy wrote and recorded it in 1929! ❤

Hey family, Pastor Fred here. Another great Playing for Change one is another one you recently reacted to. The Band singing The Weight with the Staple Singers is what you reacted to. PFC did it for the 50th anniversary of the song, and features Ringo Star of the Beatles on drums, and so many many others!!! You truly need to see it!! Side note: in the video the last 2 ladies that sing are on the front porch of the house Bob Marley grew up in.... CULTURE!!!!

And to address your other question, no, not everybody on this video is famous. One Thing PFC is fabulous at doing is mixing really famous musicians with people who just play on the street. Also, each of these musicians individually record their parts, and then it's all mixed together later. They are truly amazing
