My 3-minute music video is a montage of time-lapse sequences and real-time videos of the great all-sky aurora display of April 23, 2023.
The display was widely seen around the world, as the aurora borealis in the northern hemisphere and the aurora australis in the southern hemisphere. The geomagnetic activity level peaked at Kp8 this night, on a scale of 0 to 9.
The clips show amazing activity and motion overhead at the magnetic zenith, where curtains converged and also formed parallel ribbons that pulsated and rippled.
I shot from home in southern Alberta, using three cameras: time-lapses with the Canon R6 and 7.5mm TTArtisan fish-eye lens at f/2, and with the Canon R5 with the Venus Optics 15mm lens, also at f/2, and still images with the Canon Ra and TTArtisan 11mm lens at f/2.8.
The fast ultra-wide lenses are ideal for aurora imaging, allowing short shutter speeds and rapid cadence time-lapses, as here.
Two real-time 4K video clips are also incorporated, also with the Canon R6 at ISO 25,000 or so, and the TTArtisan 7.5mm lens. Both video clips are sped up in editing by 2x.
All images and movies shot over about a 2-hour period from 11 pm to 1 am MDT, April 23/24.
Processing in Adobe Camera Raw and time-lapse frame assembly with TimeLapse DeFlicker software. Real-time videos edited in Photoshop with ACR and NoiseXTerminator filters.
