Oh haha, ok :) anyway I really appreciate you breaking down the AT charges and whatnot for us.. I was seeing more negative reviews about AT online.. but, based on one of your comments, it looks like this can be a viable job if you're in it for the long-haul and if you take the company charges in stride. I tutored often 30-40 hours per week on Cambly for over a year.. there's a chance I may follow up with you with some more questions :)

Hello! AmazingTalker now automatically assigns you a range for your starting rate based on multiple factors (a big one being your nationality, as they base it on how much other teachers from the same country have been able to charge successfully, I believe). Unfortunately, you must stay within that initial range until you teach a certain number of classes. The policies continue to change over time as they try to find what brings about the best success for teachers and students.

Hello, Sena! I feel bad that I have not made more videos to update in the past couple of years! I want to warn you and others that here have been lots of changes on the platform that have made it more difficult for new teachers on the platform to have a successful start. But I am still happy to give any answers that I have to help! In regards to getting a mentor, you will sometimes have mentors reach out (if you fit the profile the are looking for), but you need to be careful to ask lots of questions to find out their intentions (some are looking for more income from successful teachers and do not actually plan to help much) and determine whether you both are a good match for one another. (A video call can be wise.) Are you already a teacher on the platform or not yet?t I ask because there is also a spot on the platform that shows you different mentors and tells you how many spaces they have available on their team. You can reach out to them directly to see if they are interested in adding you to their team. Unfortunately, I am not working enough currently in order to be aloud to add anyone to my team.

Hello! Thank you for watching, and thank you for the kind comments! I am currently still at $27/hr, primarily because I am waiting to see how many continue to buy at these rates. But I am continuing to get new students! My mentor’s mentor is at nearly $40 an hour. I think it was above previously, but she has pulled back again in order to ensure a full schedule. Some are charging that much! But most of those teachers have really narrowed in on a specific specialty like business English or something like that and have a lot of experience. So in the end, yes, it is possible, but it takes work! And you wouldn’t do well starting there. You would need to start low to bring in students, show your abilities, and bring in positive reviews.

@brittneycheray5204
@brittneycheray5204 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Nicole! I love that you have some goals in mind and are thinking/working in that direction! I plan to resume my videos soon, and I will talk about this in more depth, but I will try to give a summary here. In regards to lesson plans, I typically gather combination of books, games, worksheets, pictures, and activities online. I track all of my Classes and students for the month on one single Google spreadsheet and I paste the names of the activities and the links that I am going to use to the right of the student/class that I will be teaching at that day and time. Or I note the PDF that I am going to be pulling up. I now pay for a few different subscriptions that make finding these resources easier and give me some extra good resources, but at the beginning, I mainly stuck with free resources until I was sure that I knew which were good investments! As I find a combination of resources that works well for any specific topic or learning objective, I save that information in a separate Google spreadsheet so that I can grab them the next time I want to use that topic or learning objective for another student. Some people also choose to make slides for all of their lessons. I have not opted to do this. There are also options for subscribing to online ESL curriculum that you can use in your classes. That is another option! I hope this helps!

@brittneycheray5204
@brittneycheray5204 Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, I do not know of a way to connect your AmazingTalker schedule to Google calendar. But there are a couple of things that you should keep in mind: 1) There apparently is a policy that you are not supposed to be teaching ESL on any other online platform (I would imagine teachers were trying to recruit students to other platforms), so if you get caught, you could potentially have your account removed. 2) It is not usually worth it to work AmazingTalker as a side job for a few reasons. First, the rate of commission is nearly 38% at the start of the month, and you won´t be able to get that down very low unless you are teaching a lot of classes each month. Secondly, you rely on the AI system to get going, but the system rewards and prioritizes those with more time slots open and those successfully bringing in students, both of which would be limited if you are splitting your time between other platforms. These are just some things to consider before you make your decision!

Thanks, Britteny. A clear and helpful video. I'm an American living overseas in the Philippines. I understand from a review of TutorABC that their pay rate is partly based on location; whereas the same reviewer states that Amazing Talker's pay rate is based on nationality. Does anyone know whether I could expect the same pay rate as I would receive if based in the U.S. with Amazing Talker? Thanks.
@brittneycheray5204
@brittneycheray5204 10 ай бұрын
Yes, your starting range (which was not a thing at the time that I made this video, but it limits how much you can charge in the beginning) is determined by a few things, the biggest of which being your nationality. Your current location will not be a determining factor for this. And then if you end up being successful and teaching lots of classes, you will have an opportunity to raise those rates more later. Let me know if you have more questions! One note of warning, a lot has changed since I first started, and it is getting much more difficult for teachers to have a successful start from the beginning. That is not to discourage you but to make sure you have realistic expectations. But there are things you can do make the most of your start, so if you apply, make sure you are ready to hit it hard (in regards to profile presentation, preparation, contact with students, open schedule, etc.)

@brittneycheray5204
@brittneycheray5204 Жыл бұрын
Students buy packages from the specific teacher, but that money stays with AmazingTalker and is only moved into teachers “wallets” after each class is taught. At the end of each month, that money is available for withdraw from your wallet (as long as you earn above the minimum requirement, which I cannot recall at this time), and you are able to have it sent where you have it set up. Some are able to do a direct transfer, but I think most of us use Payoneer as the “middleman” of sorts, as direct transfer is often not an option. (I am unsure of who/which countries qualify.) That money, if withdrawn before the 5th of the month arrives in your account no later than the 15th of the month. Does all of that make sense?

Mercy, I am so very sorry for never responding to comment! Was someone able to answer your questions for you? The system automatically makes the packages! You can choose to make your own, but it is not recommended for a number of reasons. The only time when I make separate packages is when someone is requesting 25 minute classes (instead of 50-minute classes) and that option does not appear for them. (For some reason some cannot see that option. I believe it is those that live in Taiwan? But I cannot recall.) in that case, I would tell them of the same 25-minute package options and crate the one that they are wanting. Does that make sense? Again, I am so sorry that I never responded to this question! I doubt this answer is useful to you by now!

It is not a bug from the platform! They actually told us in one announcement that the 25-minute packages would not be an automatic option for some. I just did not understand why! No, I said that was the only case in which I WOULD make a special package. (Some of the younger children cannot handle 50 minute classes very well.) I don’t recommended creating special packages in other situations because 1) it gets to be a lot of work 2) the discounts get tricky and parents usually expect a bigger discount for larger packages 3) if you offer more classes in a package, you are stuck teaching at that rate for longer even if your rates have gone up 4) etc… ;)

The challenge is that a few months ago, they implemented a policy in which you cannot raise your price above a certain percentage within a specific amount of time or you will not receive any AI matches for a month. This was not in place when I started, so I was able to raise my rates quickly without penalty. Some choose to take the penalty and jump to a rate they feel good about. But I would be really careful about taking that risk at the start because a good start is almost entirely dependent on those AI matches until you establish a good student base. (Later, regular students will recommend you to friends and as your regulars continue buying classes, that will push you up in teacher stats.)

But once you have completed your training tasks and are able to start recruiting students, make sure that you are ready to give it your all in trying to catch those matches! Make sure your profile is at it’s best and that you have a good video on there showing who you are as a teacher! You’ve got this!

That depends on a LOT of factors! In order to get your rates up, you have to have a class that is high demand among a lot of students. If your schedule isn’t filling, it is unlikely that it will work to raise your rates. It also depends what hours you are working. A large percentage of the students are from Taiwan, Hong Kong, and mainland China. Most of them will not want classes during their nights nor during school and work times, so that window is narrow. But depending who and what you are teaching, it may work!

Yes, ignore those colors! At least if you aim to have students in China. I am not sure if those are truly peek hours for any select group of students or if it is a glitch in the system, but that has been off for me since the beginning, and I was advised by my own mentor to ignore that.

Hi Brittney, thanks for this detailed video, I found it super helpful. I got accepted into AT yesterday and this video came in handy. However, I've got two questions. First, when does the 30% commission process end, does it ever end? According to what you listed as the negatives, you mentioned how every month the 30% restarts. It got me really worried because I wouldn't want to have 30% deducted from my income every month throughout my stay on AT. Secondly, please Brittney are you open to accepting mentees/team members because the whole AT student recruitment process feels rather overwhelming. I've had the system match me with students but none would reply to my messages. And the one that did wanted me to tutor him on WhatsApp instead. I want to be on AT for a long time, I just don't know how to start right. I'd be honored to get a response from you, Brittney. Thank you❤️

Hello! Thank you for reaching out! To answer your first question, the 30% does start over on the 1st of each month, but wherever you end (as far as income or number of hours taught) by the last day of the month is what applies to your whole month’s income. So it looks like you are earning a lot less at the beginning of the month and a lot more at the end because each time you hit a new mark for dropping that percentage, it applies to all of your gross income earned that month. Does that make sense? I think I made it much more clear in my most recent video if this is still not clear. In regards to the second question, Can you please email me at brittneycheray@gmail.com so we can talk more?

@@Val-hs2ih okay, typically, you write the student and ask what they are hoping to learn. Did the teacher who booked your demo select a category showing what they wanted you to teach? (One of the things that you put on your profile as being an area of focus). If not, I guess I would prepare a lesson that you would give to your desired students and just be prepared to adapt if she wants to address specific things. Typically, you would plan to teach for about 15 minutes with a teacher and then spend the last bit of time discussing things, but each teacher is different. I could definitely do that, and it is always on the table as an option! As I explained in one of my videos, I was initially looking for an option that would enable me to make a rapid transition from my previous teaching platform to a full teaching schedule on another platform. AmazingTalker provides the teaching platform, the scheduling system, and the payment arrangements. It also advertises very well to those who have visited the website (which I know from personal experience as the ads pop up everywhere!) so it continues to bring in many new students from various countries. This meant that I did not have to worry about these other factors initially. All I had to do was focus on my profile and my teaching. The reason that I have not considered changing approaches for now is because my rates continue to rise, I’m currently completing my mentors training (so I will soon be able to train other teachers and earn a portion of their income depending on their success), and I am also going to start offering group classes in June (which allows higher income without increasing hours). So currently this is where I want to be! But as I said, I always keep independent teaching on the table.

@brittneycheray5204
@brittneycheray5204 2 жыл бұрын
Right! The first month. But now that my schedule is full and my rates continue to rise, AT takes less than 15% from me (about 13% last month) but I hope to soon have it down to the base rate of 8%! It really depends if you are in it for the long haul or not! I currently make over $2,000 each month working less than 24 hours a week (that is the number of hours I open but there are usually a few gaps in there). I also start offering group classes next month, and I just took the training and assessment to be a mentor, both of which are going to give me more earning opportunities without increasing my hours (besides investment in my mentees, which I, of course, will offer!) When teachers tell me they are interested in AT, I ask them how much time they can give and how committed they are. If they are only looking to work a bit a week, I point them to platforms like Italki where the starting rates are lower. If they are looking to commit more time and energy, I recommend AT because I believe the teacher competition is lower and the potential for earning overall higher! It’s important to know your own personal goals when making that decision.

That's not too bad finally. After 6 months of hard work? or you could get that 13% rate after 2 months or is it after x hundreds of teaching hours?
@brittneycheray5204
@brittneycheray5204 2 жыл бұрын
I make over $2,000 after the fees are taken! It was gradual over these months of teaching. The % begins at 30% (plus the 8% platform fee which will always be there) at the beginning of each month, but for every $100 earned, it drops by 1%. (Typically, I drop about 1% a day now that my rates are up, but I don’t work Sundays.) Whatever percentage you end on on the last day of the month is what is ultimately taken from your class earnings. But it does the math for you as it goes. (So it looks like you are earning very little at the beginning of the month, but it gains momentum and you look like you are kicking butt at the end! ☺️ …because that lowered percent is applied to all of your previous earnings for the month. Does that make sense?) so each month, I reached a lower percent of fees taken. It was fun to watch it drop!
