I just bought one a month ago for myself and I really like it. I have been playing 50 + years and own several really fine guitars like my Lowden, and 700 series Taylor. I bought this to play around with but was pleasantly surprised at it’s playability and quality. I like it so much after owning one and after tuning in to your video I just bought one yesterday for my only guitar student at the moment who is a musically gifted 12 year old girl whose parents cannot afford a guitar for her. She been my student for a little over a year now. She is already dedicated to music and learning and has an attention span many times longer than the average of her age. She has a serious mind and has been practicing on my 20 year old Tacoma Chief which I’ve lent her for the past six months. I am giving this Enya to her later this week at our next lesson. I am also surprising her with free guitar lessons from now on because of her demonstrated desire to learn and her rapid progress. She’s become like a granddaughter to me and I want to help her on her musical journey as far as she wants to pursue it. Thanks for this excellent video. It helped convince me.

@@Robylazarus She deserves it. One remarkable thing I forgot to mention about this child is that her ear is amazing. I believe she has perfect pitch. I’m going to test her without her noticing sometime this Autumn. You know Roby, I will turn seventy in December with progressive heart failure and heart disease, advancing soft tissue arthritis in all of my joints, diabetes. I am also a 12 year wounded, combat veteran having served in Norway’s Jaegerkommandoen from 1981 to 1993. My combat experience was in Bosnia-Herzegovina n 1992-93. This is where Serbs committed terrible crimes against ethnic Muslims. Most of what myself and the soldiers under my command dealt with were tracking down and neutralizing those responsible for the most heinous crimes against young women and little girls. These crimes were as horrifying as you can possibly imagine them to be. At the end of my time there I was shot by a sniper while standing on the edge of a tree line talking to my soldiers. The wound was very bad and I had to walk five days out of the mountains with this wound held together with duct tape, staples, and superglue. To this day I am not at all bothered to what I did to those Serbian murderers but I am deeply haunted by the faces of the dozens and dozens of little girls as young as five years old that these so-called militiamen raped and tortured to death. It gave me PTSD that ruled my life for ten years before I could find help to rescue myself from having lived a two year nightmare. I am fine now. I function. I play guitar to ease my spirit and I have now taken on my one student the teaching of whom gives me great joy. To give her a guitar she richly deserves was no sacrifice to me. She is so talented and is a dear and innocent light in these dark times. Teaching her each week kind of helps me know there are small things that we can do to to bring light into someone’s life and help them on their way. There is a quote I love. I don’t know where it came from but I try to live by it. Here is the quote, “it is better to light one candle than to curse the dark.” There it is in a nutshell. I don’t know why I felt compelled to related my very personal story to you in this way. I actually have never talked about it, perhaps only a little to friends I really trust. Oh, by the way, I served in Norway’s Jaegerkommandoen but I was born in the U.S.A. I am actually a citizen of Great Britain, Norway, and of course the U.S.A. and though I have lived in England and Norway and the U.S. variously I now live in North Texas about 30 or so miles north of Dallas. Thanks for listening. I won’t bother you with any more of my life story. Great success and health to you and yours. Keep posting your excellent content.

I'm just appreciative that Phil has the bravery to review this guitar. I've watched others on KZbin review this guitar and their respective review was just dialed-in chatter that left me at the end of their video, just where I was when I began their video - in the dark on the product. Phil has delivered info that helps me determine whether this is a company to watch and/or buy from. And that's why I continue to return to Phil's channel - the dude is a cut above his competition.

I also bought one of these about 3 months ago. I didn't opt for the electronics version because I just wanted a small campfire guitar that I could leave in my campervan without worrying if the humidity/temperature changes would destroy it. My guitar looks exactly the same except white. However, the case I got with mine is completely different. It has a pocket on the front and backpack straps on the back. It has a reasonable amount of padding, and I was surprised to see a foam neck cradle integrated in the design, which is pretty standard for a hard case but this is probably the first time I've seen one in a gig bag. It also included a strange looking guitar strap that I've never used and probably never will. My experience with the guitar is pretty much identical to yours. I definitely wasn't expecting it to sound as good as it does, and even though I planned on just leaving it in the van, it tends to follow me around because it's so easy to pick up and play. I think part of the reason is that I feel like it's a tough guitar that I don't have to baby, so I don't feel obligated to hang it back up or put it back in it's case like my more expensive guitars. It just kind of floats around the house and even though it hasn't seen it's case in months it still looks as good as the day it arrived. Every guitar in my arsenal is technically a better guitar than this little guy, but what sets this guitar apart is that it has more utility and convenience than any of them. Like you, I won't gush about how awesome it is, but I'll admit it's way better than I expected and I'm shocked at how frequently I use it since I only planned to use it while camping.

This makes me think about the psychology of change, and how we accept or react to it. EG Carbon fiber guitars are getting better and better. Here very soon someone will figure out how to replicate the sound of 'The Classics', J45, D18 D28 etc. When that day comes they will be much less expensive and far more durable. Now old guys like myself will be hoarding the old stuff but younger folks will embrace the new technology and ask 'why' buy the old stuff. It will be interesting to watch.

The reviews have been dicey on these, but we're talking about Amazon Reviews. Having Phil run one through its paces means a lot to me, and changes my opinion on the guitar-which i had written off as cheep and shitty. Im a mouthe-breather at best, but i will eventually need something acoustic. Since my nickname is "Breaker Jon," for a reason, I try to buy stuff that a moron can own, works in the jungle/desert/islands/does not explode. Carbon fiber guitars have been on my radar for a while..but the novelty of them commands a high premium (as does quality, accoutrements). This one might be a good fit for me. I think Carbon fiber guitars might be the future, or something non reactive for tuning stability. Its cool that this works, plays "better than a mini Taylor" and the price really is the tits. The next pricepoint is Donner around 500 bucks, then Kohl at a grand-ish, then like 3+ grand for the super Elvis'd up guitars. The other Enya model, is like a warcrime to me for being so ugly, and it literally makes my skin tighten up just looking at it. While i like innovation, value, ruggedness; i still have some basic expectations for aesthetic value. Its cool this one actually looks like a guitar.

I'm glad you got to try one of these! I've had the normal acoustic one for about half a year and it has lived in my car for the majority of that. It sure seems like its plastic instead of any carbon fiber that I have seen, but its durable! It has also survived being left out in a rain storm! Its the perfect couch/camping guitar for me. I spent a little over $100 on it and the gig bag alone is worth that to me. I like that it has big frets and doesnt have that much projection, so I don't bother other people.

How loud would you say the acoustic-only one is compared to a wood acoustic guitar? Half?

@@lancomedic it's pretty similar to a wood parlor guitar like an art and lutherie ami (which has a body that is easily twice as thick) or a martin style single 0. For me, the best way to polish frets is Rubbing Compound from the auto parts store. First red rubbing compound and then white polishing compound. If you put 5 or 6 min in for each fret, you are done and all you need are the 2 cans of compound, a roll of paper towels and some water in a paper cup. (I've been doing it this way since about 1984, before I knew of any luthier supply stores.)

The one thing I worry about on systems like this or the HyVibe that you didn't touch on here is how difficult it would be to replace the battery when eventually it will need to be. You are saving my butt here. I'm a formally trained musician since near birth, but picked up guitar only just before the pandemic, in October 2019. You are why I chose the Stratocaster, and how I was able to completely build and luthier my own custom axe 🎸. I go back and forth between Los Angeles and the Tokyo area of Japan. When in LA about half the year I stay in a group Airbnb. It's pretty safe, and I absolutely enjoy it, besides the price is right, but I don't want to take my beautiful, perfect, DIY custom Stratocaster there because even in a locked case, the case could still easily walk out the door. So I need a guitar that is 'good enough' while in LA and this seems to fit my needs. I'll actually have to lay hands on it first, but so far 11:36 it seems like with an hour's labor this could stave off major home studio withdrawal symptoms. Now if I could only get real Mexican grandma burritos while in Japan.

It was actually pretty fun, once you get used to the concept that they’re throwing stuff because they’re having fun, not because they hate you. But you don’t want to take your good guitar on the gig, though, take this carbon fiber guitar or an old plastic Ovation that you don’t care if it gets wet. I've had the non electric model for about a year, and it's been pretty good. It was kept in my car over the summer to see how well it would survive the So CA heat, and it passed with flying colors. Remarkable tuning stability. Comparing it to my Baby Taylor, its sound is really pretty good. It is neck heavy, which can be a bother for some. I don't find it particularly comfortable to hold without a strap. The frets on mine were impeccable, but I am curious about the possibility of refretting. The frets are so perfect, I was wondering if they were normal frets, or molded in somehow. Very interesting infor you found about the construction. I've been curious how it was put together, as from the outside, the finish appears perfect, all smooth lines and no seams whatsoever. Some of the cork sniffers will insist that this instrument doesn't count as carbon fiber, but it is. The big difference is that this is injection molded CF filled plastic, which is a different process than how most CF instruments are made, the latter being more like fiberglass/resin layup construction. At this point, I think the difference is getting to be academic, as the injection molded CF seems like it will be as durable and capable as CF layup construction.

Depends on the type of carbon fiber layout. Injection molding is likely not as isotropic as prepreg sheets
@trevormtb9372
@trevormtb9372 Жыл бұрын
There is actually a pretty big difference between injection molded and laminated cf sheets. An actual layup would give way more control over the properties of the guitar at different points because the fiber orientation has such a big impact. The injection molding is really a plastic base with carbon fiber strengthening it. Not to its detriment, it seems like a great product and I certainly wouldn't expect a full layup at its price.

It seems so many affordable guitars, from many brands, come from the factory with multiple issues. Not necessarily big problems, but still, a lot of them. Because of the rather common manufacturing "deficiencies" I'm passing on this item even though it's definitely within my purchase budget (for carbon fiber instruments). However, correcting all of the problems would easily add a couple of $100 (I'm not qualified to make most of the repairs suggested). And the no-name electronics, who fixes those when they break? Thanks for the insightful (as usual!), deep dive review. I respect that you purchased this item yourself and gave a fair but honest assessment.

i also have the non electronic one... been having fun with it. i had finish issues on mine... it was quite rough but I took a high grit polishing cloth to it and it feels great now. Also, I found a cheapie pick up off of wish that you can stick on and it works fine :-p

I'm a little skeptical. I bought a LavaMe 2 a couple years ago that was similar in size and features. Non-adjustable, molded-in features like nut and bridge proved problematical - never could get the intonation quite right. Other physical features are great, however - very stable, temperature & humidity don't affect it, and I love the light weight. I'm with Phil about the frets - life-long materials & construction pretty much demand stainless steel frets. I wasn't that keen on the LavaMe2's built-in effects, and this one seems only a little bit better. Hard to beat the price for carbon fiber, though.

I bought the cheaper version with no electronics. It’s polycarbonate(plastic )+ carbon fiber 90/10 or 80/20 something like that. I really like mine. Unique looking and lightweight. Playability is very smooth. Nice tone for a half size guitar.

As an owner of a rainsong, I am glad the tuning is stable on this. I worry about the quality of the materials at this price range, kind of like a cheap tremolo using softer metal that eventually dulls at the pivot point. The material seems quite different than the woven carbon fiber of a rainsong.

Brilliant Design. *_Thanks for the review!_* Hey, I've played violin professionally all my life since kid. I only mention that to say I can really get a lot of pleasure and utility from an instrument like this. I've tried the Martin Backpacker guitars.... great fretting and action, but not much sound. My brother played guitar likewise. (When we were kids, he very patiently taught me chords and basic techniques, so we could play together.) He had a dozen excellent instruments --- a Country Gentleman, and a 1966 Fender Jazzmaster he picked up from the factory -- and a few inexpensive, but always good fretting and a sweet sound, just not loud, or really outstanding voices. I use the guitar for composing, not performing. I play chords, and just a little melodic work, so this seems like a great purchase.

Carbon guitars keep getting better sounding every year as Makers/Luthiers understand the material better. I was surprised how good the guitar sounds and how well it was made. Improvements would be to use Stainless Steel for the "Zero Fret," and shorten the length of the headstock, and use a snakehead design. Those things will reduce neck dive and improve performance. All in all, impressive, affordable travel guitar, and perhaps more. 👍

Phillip McKnight, This is one of the BEST Review DIY Luthier Fix It and Demo Videos I have seen in Years, and the Best Video that I have seen on this ENYA Guitar. You are always Thorough and Entertaining and Educational. I have so many guitars, I have been skeptical about carbon fiber and acrylic guitars but the Enya guitar you demo'd in this video has me wanting to try one out for myself. I might send the Nut down and put a Real Different Nut on the guitar's headstock and get rid of the zero fret or Replace the Zero Fret with a Stainless Steel Zero Fret would be easier to DIY. Thanks again for the TRES GR8T video FretBro . . . 👍😎🎸🤘🇺🇲🙏 DDH 3-9-2023.

I wonder how would you go about replacing the frets on this one, since the heat of an iron might be too much for this material. The zero fret might in need of replacement in a while so i wonder

Good review. I just bought the acoustic version and have had it for less than a week. I like it. I did change out the strings for some lighter gauge strings and that works pretty good for me. I’m getting back into playing after not playing for several years. I was intrigued by the idea of a carbon fiber type guitar and this is a way for me to get my feet wet without spending a lot of money. I paid around $200 From Amazon. i’m a moderate skilled player and this is a way for me to hone my skills, and eventually move up to a more expensive carbon fiber type guitar.

I just went to purchase one, but when I chose the electric version at $279 they also wanted to add $80 in shipping charges. The acoustic version is $189 w/free shipping, but electric is $279 plus $80 shipping. I wonder why the big difference.

If there is a genuine reason for the additional shipping expense, perhaps it's related to the inbuilt rechargeable battery. Air carriers can be picky about that stuff, and perhaps it attracts a surcharge that is eventually passed on to the customer.

I hated playing B.C. Rich Warlock's because they are very heavy at the headstock. The solution is a leather strap with a rough suede backing or I have one I hot glued fishing sinkers into the spring cavity to balance it out. Other guitar players laughed when they played it and asked how I balanced it.

I've seen other reviewers state that they were able to leave the guitar on for 13 hours before the guitar battery indicator flashed red (low battery). Anyhow, this was a great video in that i was comprehensive and even showed me how to deal with any fret issues. I have recently ordered a Big Baby Taylor, and one of these Enya Nova Go SP1s. The Big Baby Taylor is slightly too big to be called a travel guitar, and it's made of wood, so it won't be making it to different climates. But the carbon fiber body of Enya intrigued me, and it will serve as a true travel guitar.

I’m going to be spending a year or more traveling around out West camping, mountain biking 🚵‍♀️, sightseeing among other things and I want to take a guitar 🎸 to keep up with practice and online lessons that won’t crack from the heat and cold. This looks like the very thing I need. I have a little child’s lunch box sized Laney portable amp that is easy to carry around. I have carbon fiber bicycles 🚲 and I love 💕 them. They absorb so much road shock. Much more comfortable than metal. Definitely going to look into this guitar but I will have to have someone work on the frets if necessary. Thanks for your demo. I have a couple acoustic parlor guitars so I know I will like the small size. 👍☮️🌞🎸🩵

It's not the greatest for bass tones. But it was a gift for my birthday and I work in a lot of elements and keep a guitar on my back. So I love it for the fact that it's versatile. And I have played it in rain, under water, in dust storms. Still goes like a champ. I love it for what it is, a travel guitar.
