The construction is unique, but I definitely would not call it a "hollow body". I would place the construction more in the "chambered solid body" camp like a Gretsch Jet. Material is carved away to reduce weight, but otherwise it's a solid body.

Working at Sam Ash music, I was always a big fan of the Squire Strat Packs. Didn't feel bad selling them because the guitar was very decent to learn on. Playability was good. Action was low. Sounded good. Same with the Ibanez packs also.

I'm a lefty who plays righty. In my experience if you want to just play simple chords and strum a bit -- playing righty if you're a lefthander is fine. If you want to shred on the guitar as a lefty -- you need to play left handed. The magic starts and is limited by your pick hand. Fretting problems? Two handed synch problems? Timing and accuracy problems with your hammer-ons, pull offs, bends and tremolo picking? Fix your pick hand dexterity and strength -- and all those problems go away. Knowing what I know now If I had to do it again, I would go lefty. It would have taken much less time and frustration to achieve or better my current level of skill.

I’m satisfied w/ the mini & original 40. I swapped out the speakers for an extended frequency range set, and it sounds fantastic! I’ll pass on the 2, and anything else that isn’t a major upgrade. Thanks for the demo

I feel pretty special too. Back when I was building guitars pretty regularly, I had 7 listings up on Ebay, and one day they were all taken down. Plus, I had a cease and desist from Fender to EBay. So after a couple of weeks, and showing Fender why my guitars did not infringe on their design, I relished them. No problem since. I like Fender guitars, but I build them better, and you know, do the little things, like put very good pickups in, and fully work the frets and fretboard edges. lol.

In fairness, cheap guitars used to be absolute trash compared to what you can buy now. My first Squire was so bad it almost put me off playing entirely.

For me, the best way to polish frets is Rubbing Compound from the auto parts store. First red rubbing compound and then white polishing compound. If you put 5 or 6 min in for each fret, you are done and all you need are the 2 cans of compound, a roll of paper towels and some water in a paper cup. (I've been doing it this way since about 1984, before I knew of any luthier supply stores.)

That's great your donating the guitar. But why would you have to re-string it? Are the strings that come from Squire garbage and unusable?

In the ‘60s I had a pre CBS strat. But sold cuz needed wheels for work. It was special having two extra switches with resister capacitor network that changed the tone that in select positions it sounded like a tele’. Anyone ever heard of this or seen one? Needless to say I wish I had it now.

For an amplified guitar, I would think that a simpler solution to the inherent problems with standard temperament would be real-time, electronic pitch correction.

"Vintage" to me is a ploy used to make an instrument appear extremely special and hike up the prices on what was a run of the mill mass produced guitar. Same goes for the "relic" guitar. Try and sell an actual road used up 20 year old guitar with a couple of dings at a Guitar Center and one will get the, "Well because of the marks on the paint and buckle rash on the back we can only give you $ _________ (some very low price). But will sell a used fake road worn electric guitar for some ridiculous high price.

Funny enough, I just watched a video of the PRS Indonesian factory and the PRS person said that they take extra steps that they dont and they are very happy with that factory. They do a lot that PRS does and some additional stuff that make the process smoother. I for one, really like Indonesian built guitars. Not PRS though, can't stand them :)

One thing you can bet your bottom dollar on .... Fender is not going to put their name on a junk guitar. This review is thorough, by someone who knows guitars, and the results are pretty amazing. No serious player would buy this guitar and use it as-is .... a fair amount of work would go into it to move it into a truly usable place. But, frankly, it's a really good platform to start with. Some serious fretwork is definitely needed for rough edges ... a new nut definitely ... set up work, as always, for decent strings, tuning and intonation stability ... the spring-in-slot technique for the vibrato stick is a nifty solution ... maybe (probably) pickup replacement ... etc. I have to say, i'm REALLY impressed with what you can buy today for that price.

Today's "first guitar" quality is so far beyond what i had with my "first guitar" in 1967, it's totally laughable. Anyone who would think twice about a $120 guitar like this one, in TODAY'S dollars, is in serious need of some historical education.
