Amazon Echo Show 5 Vs The Google Nest Hub - Which Is Best?
We could call it the Google Home Hub, the Google Nest Hub, or the Nest Hub, but it wouldn't matter. The Amazon Echo Show 5 is here and it's a real contender for the throne of best small form smart display. It's Google Home Hub vs. Amazon Echo Show 5 in a pure battle of smart home speakers.
We go through the different components of what these smart displays can do, what their voice assistants can do, their hardware, and even a few intangibles as we compare and award points per section. The #Google #Home #Hub or the Google Nest Hub comes out on top for music, video, and general information retrieval, whereas the #Echo #Show 5 comes out on top for the smart home and the ability to speak with friends and family.
On the hardware front, the speaker is better on the Show 5 from Amazon, but the screen and overall look and feel are better on the Nest Hub. The Google Assistant is in general a better device, but Alexa has better skills and external services in many cases.
In the end, this is a very close smart home battle, and you'll have to watch in order to see who's crowned the best smart display of 2019.

I own both devices. After listening to you I feel you are really biased towards Google. You didn’t mention that Amazon offers SiriusXM, Deezer, Tidal and Pandora and some other music services. Amazon also allows for users to upload their Facebook pictures to use. So if you are not a Prime User you still can upload photos. You didn’t give Amazon a point for their Routines and the fact that other devices can trigger routines unlike Google becoming more closed off. As for aesthetics you shouldn’t even have brought that up. To each his own. The ES 5 was designed to go anywhere simply because of its small form factor. The GH Hub has different base colors but the bezel color is still the same. So when you are facing it you will still see a White bezel. At least with the ES 5 you can choose between White and Black. For some people a Black device will fit better into their home decor over a White device. I am glad someone finally here in the US has done this comparison. I’ve been patiently waiting for an English language comparison video of these two devices. All I kept finding was foreign videos comparing these devices. I just wish your video was less biased.

I purchased four Google Minis and one Google Home Hub last January. I bought these mainly for communication purposes. My wife is Chinese and had brain surgery a couple of years ago and wound up with speech aphasia after the operation. Although she understands English, when she tries to speak it the language comes out as Chinese. We purchased these units just before Google came out with Google Assistant Interpreter Mode. This has been working well for us, but unfortunately Interpreter Mode does not yet accept commands in Chinese so I must initiate all conversations. Let me know if you've heard anything from Google as to when commands can be entered in more languages than at present. I use Google Calendar extensively and we keep the Home Hub in a high traffic are so anyone can quickly swipe the screen and see any upcoming appointments. I also have programmed a large number of reminder routines with a tone for an alert before the message plays. So far my automation projects have been limited to installing smart switches in hard to reach places. Enjoy your site and getting new ideas to increase my automation use.

Hey Scott - This sounds like a very specific use case. I always keep my eyes open for things like this but I will pay attention. I wonder if you should reach out to Google in any way you can and see if you can get access to any of the more advanced features they announced at Google I/O this year. Some of the translation and speech recognition features were directly aimed at situations like yours.

I have the Home Hub, which has replaced the Echo Spot on my nightstand. (I have the Spot on my work desk now.) The Home Hub is much better than an Amazon device at answering basic questions and understanding language. (It's not nearly as picky as the Spot in terms of how you word things.) And I like its morning routines better than the Spot's. Of course, the screen is a lot larger, so that's another plus. The biggest negative with the Home Hub is that the light bulbs I have that work with the Spot don't work with the Home Hub, so the automation isn't quite up to snuff.

I agree. I have been using Alexa devices for several years and I find that the Nest Hub understands spoken commands more easily, with one exception: if you tell it to dim its display, it will sometimes dim Hue lights instead. On that one command, it seems unreasonably picky to me.

2 things holding me back from Google. Wake word and brief mode. "Hey google/OK Google" doesn't really flow off the tongue like "Alexa." Also Google repeats everything in lengthy read backs. "hey Google turn on the kitchen lights" "OK turning on the kitchen lights" where Alexa just does it. Sadly I want to switch everything over to Google as I like their services and app layout more. I just can't without these 2 basic features.

I'm a Google Fan boy and even I will concede that Alexa's routines are FAR superior to Googles. It seems so simple to allow devices to trigger devices, but Google is stuck in the rut of only having voice or schedule act as the trigger. C'mon G, you've been stuck in this for years now!

@@markmceathron2013 I am kind of a Google fanboy too but I'm so angry at them for letting Google Assistant, like they could have done so much things to improve the assistant but it looks like they abandoned the project. Especially in french, there used to be 2 voices (one manly voice) but from one day to another it disappeared and they never explained why, as if it never existed. Now we are left with a very annoying and robotic voice that barely understands what we say 😒. The only advantage of Google assistant is that it is so bad that people sell the Nest devices, that have pretty good sound quality with the cast function, on internet for pretty cheap. I'm so sad that they didn't keep up with Google Assistant, it could have been much better, let's hope they bring the Bard intelligence on the assistant too, as well as on the search engine.

I wondered the exact same thing, but I ended up getting a Nest Hub (on sale for $79) even though I've been using only Alexa devices for the past several years. I wanted try a smart device with a screen, and the size and resolution (and price) of the Nest Hub won me over. I use it in the living room. The Nest Hub integrates a lot better with my Harmony hub to control my home entertainment system and with my Nest thermostat. With Alexa, I always had to figure out the right way to say the commands to control the Harmony hub and the Nest; with Google Assistant, it is a lot easier. They're about equal in terms of controlling Hue light bulbs. I prefer the way that KZbin works on the Nest Hub and also like being able to cast other video streams quickly and easily from my phone directly to the device. I also ended up getting the Echo Show 5 on sale during Prime Days and I use it in a bedroom. The sound is *slightly* better (especially for the low end) but the sound on the Hub seems less processed and more clean to me. The Echo Show 5's display is really good, though not quite as good as the Nest Hub, and the Show 5 includes more built-in services like Audible books and Sirius XM. I do not like the Echo Show 5's annoying prompts to "Try saying this/try doing this" that keep appearing on the screen, and while you can limit them a bit if you tweak the settings, they never go away. I'm hoping that a future software upgrade will allow users to stop them completely. The Nest Hub also works better as a digital photo frame, at least for me. But both devices are really good for their price points (especially on sale) and I think the choice is based more on what you want it to do. They definitely co-exist with no problems as far as controlling smart devices in your home.
@AutomateYourLife

I have both, and I'll tell you that both can be used in different situations and that you can really take their strengths and use them that way. I'll give you a really great example: My bedroom has a Google Nest Hub in it whereas my home gym has a paired Echo set with an Echo Sub. There's just no way I'm going to get the same level of sound out of anything Google produces (in stereo, with an external sub). I can also control a few extra devices that are specialized for the gym this way. :)

I have Alexa devices and love them all. You can use Mastermind to get more in depth answers. I recently bought the Nest and it was nothing but confusion. I will say, I only have a few smart plugs, so wasn't interested in controlling a lot of smart home devices. I'm sight impaired, and a huge thing for me, was that this devise dims so much when it's dark, that I can't see the clock at all without my glasses - uh, I need a bedside clock I can see. There was no changing the settings either... it would just change the settings back to one and then dim it out even further after a few seconds. I troubleshooted every setting. After opening it, I did not play around with it but for a very short time. KZbin stinks, you can't ask to see a picture of something or a web page. If you ask a question, you get an essay form that is read to you, with possibly an image, but possibly not. The assistant on your phone is 100 times better at everything. You can ask to play a game, but if you don't pick one of the very few in less than 10 seconds, it says "sorry". The Echo Show 2 I bought, I put in my kitchen and use it every day for everything. You can do almost anything on it. KZbin is much better... you have two web browsers and can even search Google... you have a keyboard onscreen that also uses voice input, you can control your roku and fire TV and smart home devices. Sorry, I hated the Hub sooo much being sight impaired and it being soooooo boring. Not affiliated with either, I just do not get what all the fuss is about, other than if you just want it for controlling other devices, which all Echos can do. Sorry this is so long, but hopefully helpful.

I know you listed home automation as the top part for alexa, but everything else seems so nice. I have smart outlets compatible with google and alexa and will be getting light switches. I have a sunrise clock compatible with both on the way. I like the features on both devices, but Google is appealing because I am an android user. When it comes to tv control, etc, which would be the better combo? Alexa: Ir controller to turn on receiver and tv w/ Fire Cube Google: Ir controller to turn on receiver and tv with chrome cast My worries for Alexa, is when I ask my amazon tap to play spotify, navigating through spotify via voice is difficult vs google's easy ability on my phone. The drop in feature & streaming our security cameras takes a while to load on our 1st Gen Shows.. the hub doesnt have drop in, which makes me sad... but, it does stream video without that annoying delay that echo has. We listen to our music on Alexa (prime & XM) I also like the way that our Show has little news stories on the screen through out the day. But, I also love the way our Hub screen shows who is at our door the second they ring the doorbell. So I'm torn.. I guess we will always have to have both. But seriously, Google needs to start showing some interesting stuff throughout the day

Hi, great content as always however I have a bit of a cheeky request if possible. I am blind and sometimes watching your videos becomes very frustrating as you have a tendency to point at things and say this one and that one, which sadly I can’t see so I’m tearing my hair out yelling which one WHICH ONE!!!!!! LOL. I know I’m a small demographic but if you could minimise the use of this one and that one it would make a huge difference to me and others in the same situation. Again thanks for great content as always. :)

Nice review Brian, As you are saying this is mainly a personal choice matter. But if you were considering devises to compare, why did you pick one with a camera installed and one without. I would jump one higher and go with the google hub max over both of these. But then again i am more a google man. Thanks, i enjoyed the comparison. maybe you can do one using the Nest hub max at some point. I still enjoy my google mini the best, it is small out of the way and works in my bed room very well.

Hey Tom, good questions/comments :) As for the comparison, I go more along the lines of price point. I’m trying to help people make a buying decision, but this one really does end up a personal choice. It’s a very close comparison in most ways, but I’m actually saying the accuracy of Google Assistant is so important that it doesn’t matter that the comparison is close on features. Google is still better.

Great and fair review. I think Amazon deserves and extra point for ease of access. "Echo", "Alexa", "Computer"... all are MUCH easier to say 50 times per day than "Hey Google". I have a huge pet peeve about Google Home devices requiring us to chant their brand name every time. Love that shirt! HAH!

yeah, google only having ONE NAME ... is what turned me off to Google devices! I have asked them for a few years to give a few other ways to start up. I can only put ONE google device in room because of it! With Amazon devices, I can have echo 5 be "computer", and 2 echo 3rd gen dots set in stereo (on either side of me at desk) called "echo", and have other amazon devices called "amazon" or "alexa" in same room and NO problems with any of them doing different functions (if I wanted to). Other devices meaning.... fire tv, fire hd8/10 set up in "show" mode if I want to watch security cams, or watch a movie. Having 4 names to engage amazon devices ... helps tremendously. 2 points should be taken off from google devices just for the ONE name BS . I have 4-5 google mini's and they are in closet (except for one I use as bluetooth speaker on mute as speaker for PC.. Will Google give us "name" OPTION, I don't think so, many have been complaining for years.

I was having issues with Audible on my Echo stereo-paired speakers when they had the same name. Since Audible does not stream in stereo, the device that is nearest you is the one that should play, but depending on where I was in the room, it didn't always trigger the speaker I wanted. So I changed the name on one of them and now it always plays from the speaker I want.

I'll tell you where I stuck mine... back in the box with a return label. Why? I have Alexa devices and love them all. You can use the Mastermind skill to get more in depth answers for questions, the roku skill to control your tv, and appsto control your smart devices. I recently bought the Nest and it was nothing but trouble and confusion. I will say, I only have a few smart plugs, so wasn't interested in controlling a lot of smart home devices. I'm sight impaired- not blind, and a huge thing for me, was that this devise dims so much when it's dark, that I can't see the clock at all without my glasses - uh, I need a bedside clock I can see. There was no changing the settings either... it would just change the settings back to 1, and then dim it out even further after a few seconds. I troubleshooted every setting to no avail and no help from Google. After opening it, I did not play around with it but for a very short time. KZbin stinks- you see only what wants you to see, may or may not be in your interests, you can't ask to see a picture of something-I tried, or a web page. If you ask a question, you get an essay page that is read to you, with possibly an image, or possibly not. The Google assistant on your phone is 100 times better at everything. You can ask to play a game, but if you don't pick one of the very few in less than 10 seconds, it says "sorry". The Echo Show 2 I bought, I put in my kitchen and use it every day for everything. You can do almost anything on it. KZbin is much better- you can choose exactly what you want... you have two web browsers and can even search Google... you have a keyboard onscreen that also uses voice input, you can control your roku or fire TV and smart home devices and they are so much fun for the whole family- my grand kids love to play the games and sing along with the songs. Sorry, I hated the Hub sooo much being sight impaired, and it being soooooo boring. Another thing, it was always putting two pictures up at a time... that was not terrible, but I didn't like it. I'm not affiliated with either, I just do not get what all the fuss is about ther Hub, unless you just want it for controlling other devices, which all Echos can do. Sorry this is so long, but hopefully helpful.

🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷👏🏻👏🏻, On both of these speakers / displays, and in Brazil for some reason Alaska is more famous it's bought more often I guess for the music that shows up with lyrics whereas when you listen to KZbin music you don't get lyrics at the same time that the music is playing, I would also say that for science I would stick with Google because it knows a lot Google is Google you know it knows everything so if you're trying to study or anything like that I would stick with Google but if you like music and other stuff I would stay with Alexa finally just want to see if they didn't Brazil Alexis a lot more popular than Google assistant and especially the Google home second generation which is the one I have and also thanks for the channel dude I love it you speaking of slow pace it's easy to understand and everything else that goes along with it

@S2 Turbine it connects to security cameras... so, if I hear a noise outside or in another room, I can say show me the sunroom..& it immediately does. When someone rings the doorbell, they appear on the screen & I can talk to them through it. When I'm at work , I can check on my house , see my puppies and talk to my husband over it. We also have KZbin live tv.. so I can say show me what's on tv.. which is one of the main reasons we got it.. so, we arent missing the game while we cook dinner. It really can be a lot of fun :)

Excellent comparison. I have a variety of Google homes vs echos in my house. Despite having both of these products, I still can't quite decide which one I want on my bedside table. At the moment I'm using the Echo Show 5 simply because for some bizarre reason Google still doesn't allow nice alarm tones or music as an alarm in the UK (at least I don't think they do). I'm a little uncomfortable with a comparison of 2 devices being on 2 different ecosystems so somebody's choice may come down to his/her prefered ecosystem rather than the device itself in the end. Regarding the music comparison, you forgot to mention that the ES5 has Pandora, iHeartRadio and SiriusXM as well (some of these services have free plans - US only though) Interesting comparison anyway!
@AutomateYourLife
@AutomateYourLife 5 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't really say I left it to a personal choice...but I thought maybe I hadn't hammered home the point at the end enough. :) Google Assistant is so much better, it really doesn't matter which services you prefer. You're going to want to interact with the Google Assistant daily, and less so Alexa.
