I love the way frogbit looks, maybe I will try them out. When I set up my first planted tank I had water lettuce and red root floaters. The water lettuce roots grew so long and lush! Now that the tank is established the roots don't grow so long. I think the new set up just had tons of nutrients in the water, and now it's not so much. I put most of the excess floating plants in my pond, and they grew massive! I had to take some of them out, because I realized they were blocking gas exchange when my giant snail nearly died. There are so many things I still need to learn.

I use and love a lot of different floating plants, Amazon frogbit (Limnobium laeviatum), Red Root Floater (Phyllanthus fluitans), Narrow Leaf Water Sprite/Indian Fern (Ceratopteris thalictroides), Ceratophyllum demersum - coontail, hornwort, Narrow Leaf Anacharis , Salvinia minima, baby water lettuce (Pistia stratioes), Salvinia minima, Salvinia Cucullata, duckweed (small and giant), and Wolffia, a particularly tiny type of duckweed. I have soft well water low in minerals so I need to add gh booster and ferts to my water to grow all of these.

I just put some frogbit in my little aquarium and added a bigger filter in the hopes that it will help reduce the need for frequent water changes. I really appreciate all the good information you provided, especially about how the health of the plant can be an indicator/caution sign about things changing in the tank. Looking forward to looking at more of your videos. Thank you!

I just got some from my LFS. I’ve killed a lot of salvinia, but the frog bit seems to be taking quite well! The roots died back and it turned quite yellow at first, but it didn’t take long (2 weeks) to start growing new runners and new roots. I like the look more than the salvinia in my own tanks.

Love the video. I noticed there is a hang on the back filter flowing, and yet still, you have great growth and proliferation of the frogbit. I always had poor luck with floating plants, and I always attributed it to the constant flow from my HOB.
@plantlifeproject
@plantlifeproject Жыл бұрын
Thanks! I made water deflectors from pieces of plastic water jug to direct the water flow downward as it comes out of the HOB which minimizes the water surface disturbance.

Hi there, I just wanted to know if there's a plant fertilizer that doesn't harm all the tiny micro life in the aquarium ? the only reason I'm asking is because I breed my fish sometimes and need the micro life in the tank in order to support the first few weeks of the fries growth.

Thank you for the wonderful video! Went out to buy some after watching, but it keeps getting sucked under the filter overflow and pushed under water. As a result it all died - do you know of a tidy looking way to keep it out of the overflow? I've seen a few solutions with tubing and suction cups but it doesn't look very natural.
@plantlifeproject
@plantlifeproject 7 ай бұрын
I have used fiberglass window screen to keep mine from getting sucked under, as well as duckweed. Probably not the most natural looking either but it does the job. I also use diy plastic water diverters on the hob filters made from water bottles to divert water downwards. These are shown in one of my most recent tank tour videos, not sure which one exactly. Hope this helps.

I see that you are not using a sponge filter. Are they really not needed? I find that they are unsightly and take up a lot of tank space. So a HOB set to a low flow is all that is needed? Is this enough surface agitation for fish to breathe? Thank you. You very nice aquariums.
@plantlifeproject
@plantlifeproject Жыл бұрын
My sentiments exactly on sponge filters. It really doesn’t matter what kind of filter you use. If the tank has low bio load, plants and is well established with beneficial bacteria, you don’t necessarily even need a filter. I have several tanks and even a pond with goldfish that have no filter at all. But they are well balanced and setup in a way where they don’t need it. I’m starting to not like HOBs as much because they take up rim space (which can be used for more plants!), but they work just fine. Surface agitation is not necessarily needed if the tank conditions are as described above, the key I think is not have the surface completely covered like with floating plants which allows for gas exchange, and remember that in addition to gas exchange at the water surface the aquarium plants are also producing oxygen with enough light. Glad you enjoyed the video!
