Those tanks behind you and all the other tanks in the video are cool looking with the root runners down the back of the tank, this video gave me some pretty great ideas as I will be slowly turning my 55gal Angelfish/EBA tank into a planted tank, thanks for the ideas.

Between vals and duckweed, they have gone crazy. Water quality is good. Kinda feel like I have tanks with plants, more than I have tanks with fish. Did get the plant hangers and have lucky bamboo and pothos in them now. Your channel is great. Guppy grass is an ass pain, too.

Yeah plants reproduce faster than fish for sure! Glad you’re enjoying the channel! Yes guppy grass, hornwort, anacharis, more plants that can potentially overwhelm a tank.

How many hours do you keep your lights on the plants for your indoor aquariums? Started mine for 4 hours using 50watts growlight, will that be enough?
@plantlifeproject
@plantlifeproject 19 сағат бұрын
6-8 hours on a timer for aquarium plants. 10-12 hours for riparian plants, but 6-8 hours can work for many plants like peace lily and Pothos.

I would recommend 6 hrs for about 3 weeks and see what happens then adjust if needed

Duckweed is, along with scuds, one of the many and wrongly blamed guests in our tank. If a plant doubles its volume over a week or so, it can do so only by "sucking in" an almost equivalent amount of ammonia. I use duckweed in over stocked tanks and whenever I see that some extra filtration is needed. Duckweed just does it. And, you can remove it, dry it and grind it in powder and feed it to your fish: fish and shrimps will love it.

Duckweed was the last thing I introduced to my heavily planted aquarium. It basically took over and killed most of the plants underneath and the soil/sand turned into a mouldy mess. Got rip of the messy duckweed and things have come back.

Duckweed is more of annoying than useless. they are far from useless. As already been said in this video, there are many benefits to duckweed. however, unless you have something specific in mind say grow out tank, duckweed farm tank, black water biotopes etc, might as well avoid duckweed altogether. Use their bigger cousins instead such as red root floaters, salvinia etc for easy removal to control its population so as to not to cover the entire top of the aquarium.

I have 4 tanks and duckweed is helpful in some while a problem in others. I use frogbit, red root floaters, salvinia and duckweed. My 29-gallon and 55-gallon have a combo of floating plants, but I've been trying to eliminate duckweed as they both have female bettas that need me to make a gap so they can find the floating food they get. I also have dwarf frogs in the 29 that need a clear path to the surface for air. My 75-gallon is for goldfish and it's a great alternative food source and nutrient filter as I cut back on food trying to starve out some black algae on anubis and pothos roots. Finally, I am using it to replace other floaters in my 5-gallon shrimp tank as it sits on the surface unlike some other floaters that extend up and lay flat against it's lid, forcing me to otherwise lower the water level in an already small tank. While sometimes a burden, duckweed is often the right tool for the job in some tanks.
@plantlifeproject
@plantlifeproject 5 күн бұрын
I get that. It does make a great floater for nano tanks! I love to use it as a goldfish food also though I have had trouble lately getting my goldfish to eat duckweed, I cut way back on pellet food maybe they will start eating it again soon. They were probably spoiled for choice.

I just trim the val and try to do the cuts at a angle. I put 6 of them in a 75 with deep small gravel substrate with a custom undergravel filter and it spread over the entire bottom in about 8 months:-)

Never had a problem getting rid of duckweed if I don't want it in a tank. How dumb are you if you can't take a few plants out of your tank? Just takes a small bit of effort over a few days to get it all.
@plantlifeproject

I think the challenge is when people are not consistent in daily removing it. If you miss a day or two it doubles in size.

You go so far as to mock people's psychology but conveniently leave out the main reason why duckweed is so hated. Namely that it sticks to everything and makes aquarium maintenance a nightmare. You are a duckweed.

I love floaters but fuckweed is too damned much. Duckweed didn't do much, if anything, about my algae problems, but a Siamese algae eater does. I actively grow algae now just to keep my algae eaters fed. 😅

I have a 29 gallon blackwater tank with 3 albino weather loaches and 6 yoyo loaches and blue shrimp. Its's heavily planted with hornwort, java moss, bamboo and monstera. lots of driftwood and seiryu stone. Duckweed was tracked it when I added fish, but its a happy tank. I don't feed it much( maybe shrimp pellets once or twice a week) There were snails, but the loaches took care of most of them. No filter but 2 airstones which push the duckweed into the hornwort. I'm not a fan of duckweed, but why hate it, my fish and shrimp seem content.

precisely. What I've been observing in ADA creators tank, they always have two plants mixed complimenting each other to imitate natural growth. In fact some of the tank looks like an unkept aquarium with too many plants that resembles a jungle with WEED in it. same philosophy can occur with duckweed and other floating plants in nature's pond. It's just ridiculous how tiny little plants like duckweed is hated. Same with pearlweed, riccia, and many other unwanted plant people consider a weed. 😂

I love the jungle aquarium look, same with ponds. As long as I’m flexible with the outcome of how my aquariums and ponds look, and not so rigid in my ideals, plants like duckweed have a welcomed place in it.

When it gets in the flow of my filters and blows through the tank, gets stuck, and dies I am annoyed, but it’s a great indicator (and consumer) of nitrates. Regardless, I have it in all 9 of my tanks and it won’t grow in 3 of them 🤷🏻‍♀️. I can’t grow Amazon sword either.

Those impressions are spot on! We can take success for granted and our blessings go way underappreciated. I have noticed this in recent years and I make an effort to try and not be that way. The better I'm getting at it the way, way more happier I've been! I grew huge amazon sword mother plants with just sand as the substrate, happy goldfish emissions as the fertilizer and Home Depot T8 shop lights. It only made me love that plant more and now that I'm back in the hobby I'll be getting one again. I also grew duckweed and I never want to deal with that again. But, I do appreciate its wonderful uses it does have its place in this hobby.

I've had every beginner plant die in my tanks except crypts and duckweed. Even guppy grass barely survived for months. Duckweed has a place in tanks when plants don't thrive. I'm now heavily dosing all in one fertilizer and having some success, not much, but guppy grass is finally growing, so it's a start.
@plantlifeproject

I can relate to that. Sometimes it takes multiple attempts along the journey for us to succeed with any particular plant.
@rogerhuggettjr.7675

Sometimes plants don't make sense. I've had pretty good luck with plants, but despite universal success with Amazon swords, they started melting in one of my 3 tanks. All used the same city water and this tank got the most sun. I transplanted them to another tank after removing the bad leaves and it did well again in an unheated goldfish tank. Had the same issue in this tank with hornwort, where it does well in other tanks with lower nitrates. Two things that grow well everywhere for me are vallisneria and anacharis, although the later can be hard to get as some shops don't sell it for its invasive nature.

Duckweed is fantastic for a brand new dirted tank. They suck up all the excess nutrients. I think one reason duckweed is so hated is that it will stick to your hands and is so easy to spread to other tanks. Like Malaysian trumpet snails. lol I got the duckweed out of one of my tanks by using a small measuring cup. I just scooped it up every few days, until it was gone. I wish that worked with mts!
