Incidentally, deep litter method provides just enough heat from gentle composting to prevent frostbite down to about 5 degrees overnight lows for several days in my 6x8 coop with a permanent 2x3 wire covered open window and corrugated cheap reused metal roofing for ventilation. I found out one year to wait till May for the once a year clean out. We’d been down to single digits and teens many times over the winter with no frostbite, I figured we were good by mid April. Got a sudden late cold snap after clean out that only dropped into upper twenties for two nights, but everyone with a floppy comb got frostbite! I didn’t realize what an enormous difference it made! No smell unless it gets a wet spot, if that happens just add a scoop of fresh shavings to the spot and spread the wet out to mix. Fling a handful of grain across any congested areas and the chickens will keep it mixed for you. From May to cold weather the new stuff will have started to break down to smaller particles from the traffic and begin to compost slightly. If you have a longer cold season, throw a few scoops of the old across the new for a head start. In a mobile coop, make a deep litter pan or other containment under the roosts to catch the poo just there.

This is great stuff! I expected the wood composting would help with heat but it sounds like it helps even more than I thought. Good I idea with throwing grain out to get the hens to do the moving of chips around for you! Thank you for the tips and thank you for watching!

@@easyworkacres I was just thinking if you moved your chickens out later in Spring, and just use that existing structure in the same spot as a greenhouse, the continued slight composting effect would still benefit any plants starts in trays or pots that you had sitting in there. You can also put a lowered ceiling over plants or critters with an inside tarp to further trap heat. Or a separate smaller cheapie greenhouse or kid tent for chicks. Just ideas.

Been using my Amazon greenhouse as a chicken coop almost a year now. We wrapped it in chicken wire and when the weather turned cold we put the cover on. We built a door out of pvc and a back wall support out of pvc both covered in chicken wire. We love it. One of our zippers broke so we taped it close. I live in Texas so it doesn't get too cold in the winter. But it's working perfectly and has kept out cats, pit bulls, and raccoons. We have a 12x10 and current have 7 hens with 4 more joining in a few weeks when they are old enough to move out of my living room.

@@easyworkacres I had to use tuck tape to close one side of the door after the zipper broke. Windows are great. Good cheap buy. We also dug ours down and covered the plastic with dirt. Inside I put a four sided cube out of skids with tree branches as roosts for extra comfort. I actually had a skid door made too because I was worried about raccoons. You should still have air flow at the roof of the build. I house my turkeys in something similar to this. I added a window at the back. It hinges at the base. Opens at the top. It is slightly open for air flow. It moisture builds inside the coop they will still get frostbite. I’m in upstate New York so I know about cold weather. At the base of the coop I used tm2x10 frame and anchored it to the ground with rebar. The door is covered with greenhouse material which I leave an open flap at the top for more airflow. Their roost is below both openings so they’re not direct line of the air coming in and going out. This year is the first year I’ve left two openings. We will see if it helps with frostbite. My turkeys have never gotten frostbite, but this is their first year in this building. It did house I roosters. Who did get frostbite. I hope this helps. Over the years I’ve also added tarps to help improve the structure. Overtime the threads in the covering will rot. And it seems will come apart.
@easyworkacres

Thank you for the suggestions! Then end doors on this greenhouse have vent windows you can open at the top and we have been keeping those opened up to prevent the condensation from building up inside the greenhouse. Anytime its not in the single digits we pretty much leave the whole door open during the day as well. I've seen where people have doubled up the plastic on their greenhouse like you're talking about with the tarps to insulate it better! So far still having great luck with no frostbite and we had much colder temps when the blizzard hit this time around than in past years where several chickens got frostbite on their combs. Thats actually a great idea I hadn't thought of! We plan to expand our chicken situation so that will definitely be something we will try. Part of the reason for doing this greenhouse version was for the compost we will get out of all the wood chip bedding at the end of the season. After we move the chickens out we plan to brood chicks in the greenhouse. Using your plan next season though I could always throw a good wood chip bedding down under the movable coop before making the hay bale barrier. You just got the gears turning for using that coop next winter. Thank you!

Fyi chickens get frostbite from moisture not the wind, but wind will make a chicken sick. Deep bedding you just add to it no need to flip it and a lot of people use wood shavings, may chickens don't like them so I use hemp bedding. I really need to get mine out on the grass next year.
@easyworkacres
@easyworkacres Жыл бұрын
Yeah quickly figured out flipping was unneeded with how much the chickens scratch around in the wood chips. We used wood chips because we have an abundance of it piled up on our farm already, so it was economical for us. We've used them in our nesting boxes for the last 2 years and they seem to like them and its done well for keeping the eggs from rolling or cracking in the box. Highly recommend getting your hens on grass. They absolutely love when we move them to a fresh area each week!

I finally put up my 10X12 TOP RATED $225 pop-up Greenhouse I bought on Amazon (different brand) and it came with that very same type plastic custom covering, except in green. It seems very sturdy and I was happy at FIRST. The actual structure/frame is amazing! It's all one piece and literally pops up like an umbrella. The plastic fit like a glove, too! I even bought the 4 sandbags made to attach to the legs! I'm very disappointed in the fact that my plastic around the bottom has a flimsy sewn on canvas style edge. It had loops for little laughable ground stakes. It was not cut with additional skirt lengths like yours, or I'd have rolled it under and around 2X4's as well! (I thought you were going to wrap yours like that before you put the screws in, but you didn't) Also, my windows only have a few squares of velcro. I wish they'd make those with zippers, like our doors. Anyway, the first wind we had was pretty brutal. Like 40mph. I've a tiny backyard with a 6ft cedar privacy fence, so I THOUGHT it would hold up alright! Oh, It's standing, thankfully, since I knew enough to anchor it better than they instructed, but it's ripped all the way around the bottom, and even when I try to tape those windows down, they just may as well be open, cause they let all the wind in around all the un-velro'd spots! That thing rocks & sways... and blows up then looks deflated, like it's breathing! I've even went around and STAPLED wood through all that strapping and plastic edge. Holding it like it was originally sewn, but I can't figure out how to secure those WINDOWS any better. So, other than waiting till summer when I could possibly try to glue in complete full coverage strips of Velcro, how are you keeping air from whipping in your windows?? (They must be different than mine)
@easyworkacres
@easyworkacres Жыл бұрын
Really sorry to hear that! I researched through a whole lot of reviews before deciding on this brand for the sake of the cover not holding up on other brands. I even saw some brands flaking away, it was crazy. The windows on mine have full length velcro on all sides so it holds pretty dang tight. So gluing or sewing on some full length velcro might solve your window problem. I did see for some people they sent pictures to the seller through amazon and got a replacement cover for free depending on the brand. You could probably still do the sandwiched boards at the bottom of your plastic like I did too. I didnt even use the extra skirting at the bottom, its hanging out from under the boards I screwed in.

Wow. Actually that’s not a bad price for that little greenhouse, for what you get. I may get one or two for my garden stuff. I think I may build up a 3 or 4 foot wall then secure the thing to the top of it to give it more height but dang that’s not a bad price at all! You may even want to consider that to give you a little height for the chickens to roost at night. I really like how you use what’s available to save money and you think outside the box and make things work for you. Very good job man. You’ve also convinced me to buy two of those greenhouses. I wish they were here now so I’m about to order them and get them on their way. But for what I’ll be using them for I will definitely have to wall raise them at least 3 foot but I have sawmills slabs that are free to do that with so no problem. Love the videos! I lost 4 chickens before I realized what was going on. Because the chicken cannot turn in the bucket, their butts are facing outward. Any movement, another chicken sees attracks their attention. Currently we have just over 50 chickens in it. 8 nesting boxes a feeder, 55 gallon water barrel, and a few roosting poles down the middle. I have another video of the 1 month follow up that has the whole set up shown inside! Thanks for watching Guzman!

How does it fair against the winds? My place has 50-60 mph gusts during the winter.
@easyworkacres
@easyworkacres Жыл бұрын
We had 40mph gusts during a snow storm a few weeks ago and it held up fine with the modifications. Haven’t seen heavier winds than that yet. I’ve been out there during some of those heavy gusts and it did well with the doors closed.

We anchored ours with screw in ground anchors and nylon strapping. It's held up to monster winds for over a year now.

Today January 18 we have 50+ mph wind. Usually this high wind is in the spring but this time in history, we get high wind monthly. I’m in the Ohio River Valley. That cheap zippered plastic bag will never stand the test of time. So when it gets ripped up or blows away, how cheap is it then?
@easyworkacres
@easyworkacres Жыл бұрын
We currently at this moment are in 50mph winds and we are in the same Ohio river valley, it’s holding up just fine.👍 The plastic cover isn’t cheap it’s pretty durable. It just needs proper weight and anchoring to keep it from blowing away which is why we added the modifications. This is actually the 3rd high wind day like this we’ve seen since it’s been put up and it still doing well.
@grdelawter4266

When I mentioned that it wouldn’t stand the test of time, I certainly meant many many many more wind storms and the UV rays of the sun degradation of the plastic. I’ve got a real hoop house that costs thousands and it’s been up for years and still looks quite nice. The sun hasn’t degraded the plastic and the wind hasn’t blown it away or ripped the plastic like the ones I see scattered across the state. My point is that you would be better served buying a quality hoop house that lasts. If you disagree, that’s ok. No harm, no foul. Have a nice day.

Did you ever add a door to it?
@easyworkacres
@easyworkacres 17 күн бұрын
We didn’t. We only ended up using it one season and tried something different for the chickens so we could move them to new pasture more easily. We didn’t like that they were basically stuck in one spot for several months.

Why do you have it so far away ? Seems like a pain in the butt to walk that far w snow to get to them if predator or for eggs ? I used similar frame but put wire under it so nothing could dig in and filled w straw, used deep straw method all winter and put their little coop inside it. It kept it heaven so didnt blow over and the chickens here in Michigan were fine all winter. It came w 1 tarp but I zip ties tarps around whole thing so no wind . Plus w coop in there I didnt have to shut door n they have 10 x 10 space to go around in. I only have 4 chickens right now. I'm getting 6 more this month.

Hi Debra! We have around 50 or so chickens in ours. It’s not as far from our house as it looks but we have to have some distance because we have small kids and want time to catch them before they make it to the fence when it’s electrified. We also have watch dogs that don’t let anything get close to our house or the coop. It sounds like you have a great set up though! I like the wire floor for both weight and protection! I appreciate you sharing and for watching!

We leave the doors open during for most of the day on both ends so they can roam unless its extremely low temps. In that case we close it to hold in the heat to keep em warm. The negative temperatures we got a few weeks ago were rough!

How did this hold up over the year?
@easyworkacres
@easyworkacres 19 күн бұрын
It held up well up until an 80mph wind storm blew through and caved in a small section on one side. Part of the issue was that it was literally standing alone in the middle of a wide open field during that storm. We did bend it back out but we ended up not using it again as a winter coop since it was hard to regularly move the chickens to new pasture with this set up. I think if it was at least up against a tree line or fence it wouldn’t have taken any damage but it stood no chance in an open field. Assuming the price hasn’t went up I still think it did pretty well given you make the modifications to sturdy it up a little.
