A tip to stop your Himi Gouache from drying out is to cut a piece of white card stock about 6mm smaller that the inside of the green box, round the corners as well, and then laminate it. Then cut the laminated sheet down to the exact size of the inside of the box and again, round the corners to fit. When you’re putting them away, drop the laminated sheet on top of the paint pots then add the mixing tray then put the lid on and snap it shut tight, pressing all around the edge of the box. My Himi’s are 18 months old and are still nice and moist because I did this to keep them fully airtight. The box alone isn’t airtight.

Whom ever coined the phrase "it's like watching paint dry" I suspect had never watched a good KZbin swatching video 😂😍👍🏻. My first box of "Amazon Day" art supplies arrived today but the exciting stuff comes in a couple of weeks from Europe, a couple of different boxes of Luminance Pencils! 😀. I think that different products were available as "sale" items in different countries, as the Carbothellos were full price from Australia, wherever they were purchased 🤔. Thanks for showing the Kansi Tambi granulating colours. I've been looking at those as they've been on my Amazon "art supplies" wishlist for a while now but they weren't reduced either. Here's the thing though, as fun as they are, I think I would only ever use the Orange one which looked liked Copper with a patina to it like you said. If I ever see them on sale I will def pick them up though, good for sketchbook faffing. Thanks again 😎👍🏻

Ohhhh… those granulating colours are super-lovely! I love the idea of the Himi gouache being so affordable and ready to use without any prep and before I bought designer’s gouache, I was tempted to buy the Himi to see if I liked gouache. I ended up buying a set of W&N primary colours instead and (as with every new medium for me) I went into collector-mode and now I seem to have plenty of designer’s gouache 😂. My hesitation for buying the Himi at this point is that the containers are so big, I don’t really have a good spot to store them. I also rarely paint at a table/desk, so my preferred palettes are smaller. You purchased the neocolor i that I want to pick up at some point; I think the white would be lovely as a resist; aside from that one, I’m happy to stick with the ii’s. My only Amazon Prime art supply purchase was an extra pencil case to help me organize things a bit.

Yes, I definitely love my Designer's Gouache, and the Himi won't replace them, in terms of quality and lightfastness, but I do think they'll be fun! The box is weighty though, so not ideal for painting on your lap or wherever. You were very restrained, well done!

I recently got a great bargain from Amazon the caran dache museum aquarelle watercolour pencils , marine 20 set for under £40 , I almost cancelled the order but could not , fortunately for me , they Arrived sometime last week and can say they are absolutely beautiful and the colours are really nice , I have the supracolor set of 30 and they are good but I can highly recommend the museum aquarelle set . The lowest price now is just over £50 a set each for the marine set & the landscape set from cass art . I’m getting the landscape set next . Xx

You might wasnt to hold off on; chucking your Neo I’s. They are really fun under and over oil pastels. Under the pastel it acts as a bit of a resist, and if you scrape back you get these lovely ghosty marks. Over, they make some nice sharp lines you cant get with the chunky pastels. I haven’t tried them under Sennelier, but they work under everything else I’ve used.

To the point about the HIMI gouache possibly not rewetting (asked by another commenter) - I have seen people theorize that HIMI has an acrylic binder, because of the way it performs when dry. Sarah Burns wrote to the company and was told that they have a chemical petroleum-based binder. I would say there is no chance it is an acrylic binder - they fully rewet even a long time later, to the extent that they haven’t already completely settled into the paper or stained it. (Thick layer rewet much better than a highly diluted stain.) Lots of people let the whole palette dry and will either work from dry paints, or reconstitute them. But they do dry in a way which doesn’t lift in the same way as traditional gouache. There are non-plastics derived from petroleum, such as glycerin. There are also various industrial starches which would result in the same sort of consistency - smooth and slightly gel-like when wet, and then harder when dry, but rewettable. Even thinking to the food world, there are starches and seeds which can do that. I know Turner Design Gouache, which is a bit more of a traditional gouache, is marketed as being resistant to lifting (when another layer is applied on top.) I think it may have some sort of starch in it, too. That said, I love the jelly gouaches for playing around. I saw the set on Amazon which has even MORE colors, and I admit it was appealing to me because they were all in a portable container (as opposed to a million tubes, which would be overwhelming.) I can see the appeal of doing some stylized art without having to mix any colors. I have let my set dry to a point where it is thick and paste-like and I actually use small bristle brushes on it, and I think I like it better than I did when it was totally wet, but then again, I typically work from dry gouache instead of straight from the tube.
@helencryer
@helencryer 4 ай бұрын
Thank you! I didn't say they don't re-wet, just that they don't re-wet in the same way that my professional gouache do, and speculated that it might be because of the use of a different binder. I think you put it better - that they lift in a different way.
@Anonymoi
@Anonymoi 4 ай бұрын
@@helencryer Oh I know, just adding some info since it sounded like someone might have taken your assessment as them not rewetting, and I have seen this “HIMI are acrylic” idea making the rounds. They are interesting. I find they behave more like traditional gouache (or I should say dry pans of traditional gouache) if you use them when they are dry (or dry-ish) but they still don’t life in quite the same way.

I laughed out loud when you swatched the highlighters because I was thinking they would be interesting with the Derwent drawing pencils too! Mijello's yellow ochre is PY42 and Daniel Smith's is PY43. PY43 is the real yellow iron oxide pigment, ground up and PY 42 is a synthetic version of real yellow ochre. That accounts for differences in color, as well as the granulation with the DS. I don't have any py42 in my palette so it was interesting to see the differences in color. I have definitely noticed differences in different brands of py43 because the fineness of the grind affects transparency and other things can happen in preparation, or in the sourcing of the iron oxide to affect color. I hope you enjoy it as you play more with it. The granulation is crazy with the Gansai Tambi paints!!! That is like some paints I have used like DS Cascade Green and Moonglow where the separation/granulation happens because the pigments used form a MIX that separates when painted out (each pigment has differences in weight in suspension) versus creating a COMPOUND color. I'm definitely a bit of a geek for Daniel Smith paints. Their factory is close to me and they used to sell from an art store on site there....one of the very sad casualties of the pandemic. No more retail outlet, but I learned a lot when they were open. The Carbothellos are great pencils!

@@helencryer I only ever buy in the sales, haven’t a wide range of colours in anything but Schminke and wanted a neutral palette for ages, so opted for the set of six, which rounds out a new jackmans palette of neutrals which was very affordable. I think W&N will be very compatible as they do not have honey. Some of the lapis lazuli disappointments in known brands are probably mainly lapis ash rather than real lapis. Obviously ultramarine ash is an attempt to make something similar, so not sure of the revival label, though I do welcome it. I did not like the yellow revival so was very happy with my choice.

I have to say I do like the colours the Himi Gouache set includes I have an old (5 years +) set with bigger tubs and just dark and often similiar toned colours :( and I never really used it because in the end I ended up needing to mix everything and buy an extra white gouache so I then stuck with the schmincke academy tube gouaches xD . That empty pan in the Kuretake set is for stirring the colors up with water. If you add even more water and stir them up in it first the granulating effect is even more pronounced! I wonder if it's because they aren't using just pigments so the stirring beforehand separates the bond between whatever it is they are using? Like maybe sumi inks?

So interesting that different kinds of pencils SOUND different. Symphony in Caran d'Ache, the Derwent Concerto, and A Little Night Stabilo. Does the Gansai Tambi set raise the question of flocculation versus granulation - and does it even matter? That Himi set is good news. I haven't wanted such a sprawling box or so much gouache exposed to the air, but the smaller palette of half pans is appealing. I look forward to the art & videos these will inspire. Those Gansai Tambi paints look wow. I think they'd look great in abstracts or in fantasy works with dragons, fairies and mermaids. I'm not so keen on your pastels this time, they look crumblier than some of the other brands you've shown. I was thinking your finger was the better tool on those pastels. Maybe those tools will work better on some of your other brands? The gouache looked fun. I can see many interesting backgrounds appearing in your videos soon. One of my bookmarked NZ art stores had a great special on the Derwent pastel pencils today so I picked 20 out of the available colors that had the better light fast ratings. At $2 each instead of $5.19 each I couldn't resist. While I was online I also bought one neocolor i and one neocolor ii to try because I still can't decide what I'm doing with them. It will also be interesting to compare the i's with those plasticky Jovi crayons I had lying around from when my kids had them at school. I also picked up one Derwent Inktense pencil to try in a yummy looking Dusky purple color. It's good when I can find a store that sells individual products and not just the sets. It limits my brand options a bit but at least I'm not paying for colors I'll never use in a set, especially as most of the cheaper smaller sets have a lot of lower light fast colors in them and I'm really not a pink person. Earth and ocean color sets suit me better than the flowery colors.

Such a lovely haul! I think I will get the Stabilo Nature and the gouache is tempting me, but I am quite broke at the moment so I might have to wait a bit to get the set. 30:22 These tools will work better if you use them on Pastelmat (or equivalent) paper, I think. I use makeup brushes (they look like the brush from your set) to apply my PanPastels on Pastelmat and they work pretty well. I work with pastel pencils a lot and I love the Carbothellos! They are softer than the Pitt Pastel and harder than the Caran d’Ache ones. I also have some Derwent and I think they are somewhere between the Pitt Pastels and the Carbothellos. My feeling comes from using them on Pastelmat. They don’t feel the same on other papers.

So the Himi don’t rewet on the paper? I would be interested if so … but I suspect the lightfastness might be poor

They DO rewet, just not in the same way as my other gouache. It's hard to describe, and obviously I've only had that short play with them so far. Yes, I have no expectations re. lightfastness. These are purely a fun, sketchbook product, in my mind.

I have never seen those kuretake paints! Wow they are very different, are they lightfast?

I'm assuming they are not lightfast, because of the bright pinks and purples. All I can find that Kuretake say about their Gansai Tambi paints with regards to lightfastness is: "Since Gansai Tambi is a pigment-based paint, it is lightfast as long as not too much water is mixed in, but please be noted that the more water is mixed in, the weaker the lightfastness becomes. Also the lightfastness depends on colors"
