Dish cleaning tip: If you are traveling with dishes and are tight on room for liquids, get a sponge and cut into thirds or quarters. Wet the sponge and put your dish soap on it, suds it up then let it dry. Put the pieces into a zip top bag and when you want to wash a dish/bottle just wet the sponge again and you have a sudsy sponge. You can keep the pieces for another trip, too.

What a delightful video! I am a travel neophyte so I would never have thought about cooking/drinking/eating while traveling. This helps me understand how to keep from being totally dependent upon restaurants while traveling. Thank you! PS...I would love to see a series of vids on "How to Travel"...for complete beginners. How to decide where to go, how to book a flight, how to find a hotel or air bnb, how to convert money, how to "wing it" as a solo traveler. I am hopeless when it comes to traveling well. Anything would be useful for me. 🙂

My first solo trip I ever took was Disney World. Now that may sound crazy as I was over 40 at the time but I had been before and I knew that I always felt safe there. Plus Disney (I don’t know about now) had shuttle service from the airport to your resort, the resorts all have some kind of place to eat and you don’t have to do the rides. You can go for nice walks sit on a bench and people watch etc…. It was a great first solo trip.

Eunice, I appreciated how you explained why you do this, that "it is a comfort thing for me". I am the same way with certain things at home like always having a full pantry and emergency supplies. Even when I was a kid, if we had a tornado watch/warning going on, it was me--the kid--who was bringing the blankets, lanterns, snacks, etc. down to the basement making everything cozy and ready for anything. It has carried over into my adulthood. Thankfully, my family understands and they don't laugh at me. They know to just deal with my fascination with gadgets! :)

We are cut from the same cloth! I have been like this, since I was a child as well. And I don’t know why it is but I’m always wanted to make sure that everyone has everything they need.! I found my tribe! My Dad was born a farm boy in the Dust owl area, my family stayed. Tough people. Then he was career Military. It was just natural to "put stuff back" for a rainy day. He taught me every thing he did my late brothers, man I hated it at the time (boring as a kid) but it has saved my butter so many times! My parents basement looked like a small grocery store! lol He had a generator but only big enough to run the furnace and freezer oneat a time. He had a huge freezer full of meats that he saved during an ice storm in '96...save $3K worth of meat!

Love the S2S collapsible cups with lids! (I have medium cup - which would nest in X-Large bowl with lid, small cup nests in large bowl as she displayed.) Great to throw in your purse for restaurant leftovers, in the car for small loose nuts, snacks, candy on family road trips so those big bags don’t spill. The cup nests inside cup holders. And for yogurt cups that don’t get finished you have a sealed lid! I also like Victorinox folding serrated knife with round tip…though would need to be in checked luggage if flying. Omventure’s ‘sustainable travel kitchen’ lists some similar & additional good ideas for long term travellers. Ultimate fav can opener I’ve used in my home for over a decade - the tiny, mighty ‘super Kim Nogent can opener’ for those who struggle with your flat military style can opener.

I have a similar collection for when I traveled for work! I actually carry less but more electric gadgets. I have a coffee French press thermos (300ml). An electric 500ml/ pint kettle dual voltage (from Amazon UK), a collapsible silicone cup with a clip lid for soup (ramen), a small one with a lid for beverages. Spoons and chopsticks. This goes into my carryon bag. I also carry a bento box of things to eat on the journey if there is no inflight service. If I have checked bags I carry an electric lunchbox, and a small bag (a toiletries bag) with knives, forks, tiny plastic cutting board, tiny whisk, tiny silicone spatula, kitchen towel, small sponge, seasoning, Swiss Army knife with can opener. I have three electric lunchboxes but I only carry one depending on the electric voltage available at the destination. These are Itaki, Hotlogic, and one I got from Korea which is a folding rice cooker. None of these get hot enough to fry things so at some point I may add a Dash mini griddle to my collection. I really like your collapsible silicone boxes too as a lighter replacement for the hotlogic container! Also chopstick are indispensable! I carry a few of the takeout kind as they can be used for cooking and even to mix dough!

It’s such a fine balance between wanting to pack healthy food and also saving enough space to have a carry-on, only trip but with enough practice, I think we all can figure out a few things to bring along with us to help us eat healthy and save us a little bit of money in the end😊💕

Thank you so much! ❤️😊 even if I’m short flights I bring a travel snack bag! On my last flight which was supposed to be about four hours it took 36 hours. They were issues with the plane so we had a gate change and then delays and then rerouted so that way having food with me meant that when I got to the destination we were rerouted to and there’s nothing open I have something healthy to eat., I always feel like a snack bag is just a be prepared bag and if I don’t use it, I’ll just use it on my return trip😊❤️🙏

I did not know this was the video I needed!! Awesome information that never occurred to me! Just earlier this year my husband and I spent a week in Jamaica. Having a travel kitchen would have been great for breakfast and late nights. But the worst part, our flight back was delayed and we along with another 110 people were stuck overnight in Chi Unexpectedly. And even though we got hotel and meal vouchers, by the time we got to the room it was after 11p: hotel restaurant closed and Door Dash overwhelmed with orders. I was so HANGRY all night. I Love the Travel Kitchen idea!!! My kids are grown, but I know this is so super useful to parents too!

I have been looking for a small roll on antiperspirant for sensitive skin for my liquids bag. Every one I find when you look carefully are at least 50 ml. The 50 ml U.S. not a problem but they are big. They take up too much room in my liquids bag. Because space in the bag also counts. I’ve been searching and searching for one only find some natural types which are not really antiperspirants and very expensive. Why can’t Dove etc make a mini size for traveling?

You actually CAN open food cans with no can opener but it does make some noise and you need a cement sidewalk or something comparable. You just turn the can upside down on its top and rub the top of the can against the sidewalk in circles over and over until the friction slightly heats the top of the can. The glue holding the top of the can in place will loosen and you can take off the top. Just keep rubbing and testing the can lid until you get it off.
@TheoryofSimple

Thank you for sharing that. However, I do think I will just keep my little handy can opener.😊 at the time that I needed the canon printer. It was January in Boise, Idaho, and pure ice outside so I don’t think I would’ve been able to heat it up enough to get the lid off.😊

@@TheoryofSimple Nooooo...... I was just responding to your comment saying "You can't open this (the can) without this (the can opener)." Yes it's a bit "extreme" but if you ever get caught without a can opener again, you don't have to go hungry. It works! I've tried it!! (This was when my opener was just too old and stopped working.) LoL. Say you're out in the wilderness and find you forgot the can opener (although you really wouldn't be likely to be taking too many cans out there unless maybe you could drive to your destination), then just find a flat rock (if you can) or keep a small piece of sample tile with you (like I have to set my glue gun on for arts and crafts). Use any flat surface to get the lid off. There's no need to go without food just because of lacking an opener. (Another situation in which someone might use this is when a homeless person gets canned food from a food pantry but has no opener....... or maybe after a natural disaster (flood, hurricane, tornado, etc.) when things like openers may have been lost. It's always good to know little tricks that keep you fed. :)

I have that portable pot and like it very much but one problem is it takes the smell of whatever you cook it in and can’t really wash it off. So I use it mostly to boil water then pour water in another container or have another one so one for savory food. We use it when we stealth car camp. Usually it’s just water for hot cocoa or coffee or instant noodles or oat meal but only to boil water. It’s great because cause it’s smaller than other foldable silicone kettle. 2 ppl in an suv .. every inch counts. International travelers get a plug converter cuz it’s 110v. lol… there are hacks to open a can with out a can opener on line .. my bf gets a kick out of watching those things . I have been freeze drying foods at home since 2016. I have been focused on food storage and having fast spoiling foods on hand such as mushrooms and fruits and veggies and also made my husband hunting kits which he said were like being at home in the dark cold forest. I am looking into making travel kits such as bone broth, fruit purees to add to smoothies or milk or into yogurts for extra nutrition. There are so many sizes of mylar bags that flat pack and one small 4x6 can hold a family’s worth of food powder, a quart can hold 2-3 servings of regular soups, and a gallon (8x12) can feed 4-8 adults. The weight is mere ounces as well. For short term trips, I would buy the mylar that has the clear front so it can be inspected without opening. They are TSA friendly. The foods don’t last as long and be very care when opening. Treat as if fresh. FD foods are extremely hydroscopic and will draw in moisture from the air so keep it closed until used. Our favs are spaghetti, stroganoff, stews, and hamburger rice meals. So filling and healthy and morale boost while giving utmost nutrition. -think mountain house with it the sodium and preservatives. Traveling with FD food can also be a literal life saving aspect when food allergies are involved. Your food your sourcing.

They can be torn into a small piece for sink or bathroom washing. I chose a magnolia scent just to be different, and when the box arrived I adore the smell! Anyhoo - I’m going to test try them at home - socks and underwear in the sink and a pair of pants in the tub. Of course you can use a whole sheet in your home washer. My son uses the wooden top box for school lunches. The box is small but that is where the elastic band comes in so handy to store his drink bottle securely underneath it. They are very well made and sturdy.

I know why you were so excited at the start because I can get that way too. You're looking over all these items that help you feel prepared for anything, and with that comes joy. I love your variety of items, and have my eye on that collapsible kettle and the small fold up towel in its case. Probably more when I rewatch, lol! TY.

Thank you 💕 yes, there is something very comforting about being prepared for about anything! 😀 . I love that cattle for US domestic travel, but I have a different one that I carry for international travel that is dual voltage and I’ll be showing that one in a video soon.!

quick question.. is your little collapsible tea kettle UL listed?? we've been trying to find one that is.. but none of them that we've found so far is.. my husband is a safety inspector so we really want the safest we can get.. and the one we've got now.. leaves much to be desired..
@TheoryofSimple
@TheoryofSimple Жыл бұрын
I did not see a UL sticker on it. Many things coming out of China. Do not have that because that is not a regulation that they have their. Are used to be in hardware product development and I’m very familiar with that particular regulation in the United States. I will say that I have used my electric tea kettle several times and I’ve not had a problem. That being said, you always want to be cautious even with a UL read it appliance there’s always a chance that something could break and go wrong. One thing I do do is unplug it as soon as I’m done using it and never leave it plugged in and it goes for all of my electrical appliances weather there a curling iron and immersion heater or a blow dryer.🙏😊❤️

I like the new kettles, but I've always traveled with my parents tiny hotpot from the 60's or 70's...lol I also use my maternal Grand Mothers Sunbeam T9 Toaster, matching platter, matching creamer & sugar set, Percolator and her Sunbeam mixer from the late 40's early 50's..when things were made to last. I just had the cords replaced at an electrical place, for my own peace of mind...lol Saved me money, thanks to my G'ma!

I keep thinking about how we'd freak people out with all our weird gear if we ever travelled together! I have many of the same items, some different. That immersion coil is a life saver. One thing watchers should be careful of, make sure the coil is fully immersed BEFORE plugging in, and when water has boiled, unplug before taking it out of the water, otherwise you'll burn out the element. I stopped travelling by air with metal utensils after both very blunt knife and fork were confiscated by TSA (this was not the same trip when they decided a Christmas pudding was a threat to national security😂) Instead, I have a set of collapsible knife, fork, spoon, and chopsticks made of wheat straw. Even the hyper vigilant agents at Logan - my most frequent US destination when my father was alive - aren't going to see straw as a threat! Those Stasher bags are brilliant for travel, they are a whole kitchen by themselves. I'm loving the little tea strainer, I'm a total tea snob.
@TheoryofSimple
@TheoryofSimple Жыл бұрын
Yeah, TSA is very agent dependent. You might get somebody who doesn’t care and you might get somebody who’s hyper vigilant. In the end, they’re all doing the job trying to protect us, so that’s why I don’t care anything too. Terribly expensive with me except for that water bottle that they took for me last time…🤪
@jenharvey3397
@jenharvey3397 Жыл бұрын
@@TheoryofSimple A real bummer about that water bottle, and I'm guessing the agent probably wanted it for himself. Otherwise he'd have let you pour out the water and ice and bring it through empty. I've seen some videos of people unpacking huge boxes of stuff they have purchased that was confiscated by security agents (and presumably resold online by same agents, otherwise they'd be in landfill and not on ebay!!)
@TheoryofSimple
@TheoryofSimple Жыл бұрын
@@jenharvey3397 well this was definitely my fault because I left a little bit of water in there. What I don’t understand is why they can’t just let you drink it and keep on going on your way, but I guess that’s their way of making it painful enough so that you don’t do it again.🤪
@jenharvey3397
@jenharvey3397 Жыл бұрын
@@TheoryofSimple Yeah, it it was really about passenger safety, as they are always saying, you wouldn't think they'd mid a passenger drinking a potential bomb. Surely if someone was going to do that, it proves that the liquid is innocuous!

@@TheoryofSimple Great idea to do a boat video. We have a park model trailer, like a miniature mobile home with a loft up at the lake here in Ohio. We have had it for 20 years. Now a boat. So, I have learned how to save space pretty well over the years with 3 kids but there is so many new products out now and so so easy to purchase. It’s a game changer now. I to have been stranded traveling, too so having a few things with you can make a huge difference. You don’t realize until it happens to you. My daughter was stuck 3 days in Minneapolis trying to get home to Ohio from LA in that bad storm for Christmas this year with her English Bulldog. Everything was closed. She was so thankful she listened to me on a few emergency things to pack. See, sometimes mom knows something. Thanks again. Great videos.
