I WAS A STUDENT AT CORNELL UNIVERSITY AND A GOOD CLARINET PLAYER. IN ABOUT 1974 I WAS RECRUITED TO PLAY IN THE ORCHESTRA FOR THE LIPIZZAN STALLION AIRES ABOVE THE GROUND SHOW. THE SHOW TRAVELED WITH A CONDUCTOR, A HAMMOND ORGAN PLAYER AND A DRUMMER. I WILL NEVER FORGET THE DRUMMER. HIS NAME WAS DOUG TWAIMAN AND HE WAS THE WINNER OF THE BUDDY RICH DRUM COMPETITION SOME YEARS PRIOR. WE HAD A BALL PLAYING THE SHOW AND TALKING ABOUT MUSIC AND WORKING FOR BUDDY. BUDDY DID NOT READ MUSIC DOUG'S JOB WAS TO SIGHT READ THE NEW CHARTS WITH THE BAND WITH BUDDY SITTING BACK LISTENING. SO DOUG WOULD PLAY DOWN THE CHARTS WITH BAND AS BUDDY WOULD LISTEN. THEN BUDDY WOULD TAKE OVER THE CHAIR AND HE WOULD NAIL EVERY DETAIL OF THE DRUM CHART AFTER ONLY ONE LISTEN AND WOULD RETAIN IT SEEMINGLY FOREVER. WHAT A MUSICAL MIND.

Thank Goodness that the Lippizzan Stallions were saved from the Soviet Red Army. Also, I'm sure that it wouldn't be possible, but I'd love to see that General George S. Patton, Jr. be posthumously promoted to 5-Star General.

Col. Podhajski also wrote "My Horses, My Teachers" a great book. Thank God the horses were saved for posterity!

We saw them perform in Vienna a few years ago; they are as beautiful and talented as ever. Amazing animals.
