My grandmother specialized in collecting antiques and I remember looking in her glass cabinet filled with Swarovski figures. I would sit in front of the cabinet for hours staring at all the figures. It’s as if I was a trance and I still remember this very vividly . Something about these figures is very whimsical and enchanting.

I’m kinda having a love/hate relationship with Swarovski lately. I love their crystal figurines and jewellery. But Swarovski has also a big department dedicated to diy stuff with beads, cabochons and gem stones. They chose to let go off that segment -well knowing that they are unmatched in the quality of gemstones and glass beads- and instead they want to provide those beads only to high end brands like Gucci and LV - so that they can ‘elevate’ the perception of their brand. I hate them for killing all the local bead stores that sell those diy products and for example nail artists that won’t be able to use their products anymore....

Swarovski is a family owned business which was having huge problems the past few years due to nearly every family member being involved in the business.. They really said let’s cut off that segment but let’s make it high brands only can get it Maybe there will follow other companies trying to recreate something similar. But we all know that nobody really has ever reached their quality and who know how long it will take them to reach that..

A couple of years ago we changed our tree to all white lights and all of the decorations are silver, white, glass and crystal... So now whatever we do with our décor, the tree will always match. My husband says it's a chandelier tree. Cos I've bought old chandeliers from antique stores & eBay. Most were broken or had bits missing. I dismantled them, washed the crystals, restrung them and they live on our tree.

But I'm cautious of of ordering newer items cos I once ended up with a bunch of plastic pieces not the glass listed and pictured. So whenever I'm at car boots, antique stores, antique fairs and markets I watch out for broken chandeliers. If there are ever any parts I can't use, like pieces shaped like arms or branches... I resell those. I often get my chandeliers that are sold as broken, missing pieces or sold as "parts only". I also use chandeliers because there is a difference between old and new crystal.
