For as embarrassing or “silly” as it is. I’m very glad that Amber mentions losing control of the bowels and bladder during the event because that is a genuine sign that there is a complete airway obstruction that is being prolonged. People feel like they get choked up all the time. Like she said, we have all felt food or drink get sucked down the wrong pipe at least once in our lives. But her mentioning that specific detail is something that we teach paramedics/nurses/doctors. Many people freak out over choking when all panic does is risk a partial airway blockage becoming a complete block. I’m also thankful that she came with the facts rather than dramatics, despite how traumatic this is which definitely warrants dramatics. She stated the cold hard facts. Medical techniques and procedures that are proven effective will not work for her solely based on her circumference alone. She provides the next best thing to do in those conditions, acknowledging that it is just that- the next best, not the solution. Airway obstruction doesn’t discriminate. Yes certainly there are factors that increase risk (it’s why we can thicken liquids and purée foods). But overall, complete blockage will take everyone out the same. Regardless if you’re 1 year old or 100 years old. As a nurse, I really appreciate her story and my sympathies go out to her regarding this event. This is one of her best videos regarding her weight loss journey, the problems with extreme morbid obesity, and giving true objective information regarding the issue. Unlike most other videos of hers that would relegate these issues to “it can/does happen to anyone” and fat-phobia.

Guys, for those of you who don’t chew your food properly, PLEASE CHEW IT PROPERLY! I’m a nurse in Australia. About a month ago I was working in a place I haven’t worked before (I do agency nursing so I go to different places all the time) one of the patients i was caring for was having lunch. About 5 mins into lunch she started to cough. Not knowing if this is a normal occurrence with this person. I rubbed her back gently to start. She continued to cough which led me to having to implement chocking procedures. 5 x back thrusts. (PLEASE DO NOT DO THE HEIMLICH manoeuvre) 5 back thrusts with the palm of your hand hitting the back in an upwards position. You can also do the same to the front of the body if you have access. The person I was doing it to was in a wheelchair so I couldn’t access the front of her body. Still chocking. Tried again to no avail. Her colour started to change as she was deprived of oxygen. Called 000 explaining what was happening. She then stopped breathing. I (with the help of my team of carers) had to get her on the floor and commence CPR. I did around 3 rounds of CPR and luckily dislodged the food that was stuck in her airway. The ambulance arrived shortly after. Not only was it traumatising for her, it was for myself, the staff and the other residents in the facility watching as this played out. She now chews her food properly!

The last comment I posted on one of her videos was asking whether someone could share destiny's channel because I wanted to hear it from destiny herself Rather than reading comments. Since then I haven't been able to comment on her videos. Absolutely ridiculous. But there we go. Thanks for sharing this video. Keep up the great work. Siobhan and guide dog Marty.

That sounds pretty scary, glad she's okay. I believe there's a way to do the Heimlich over a chair, if you're alone or can't get your arms around the person, too. And, well, chew your food.
@ximar0ckstrx Жыл бұрын
I know the chair maneuver and I don't think it would have helped in this case. The point is to hit the diaphragm hard enough to force the trapped air out if the lungs and thus, dislodged the obstruction. But If you have layers upon layers of fat between the chair and your diaphragm... its not going to do anything. Your fat become an obstruction in a life saving maneuver

I didn't crack a smile until "choking on a potato." And maybe it's because death can be a terrifying subject, so finding humour in it at all makes it easier to process. Choking is legitimately one of the most terrifying things that can happen. In fairness, I don't think she was because she didn't exaggerate, she kept it pretty simple, and I've noticed a lot of people when they do lie. They elaborate on everything and she didn't. She actually was quite serious and sincere, for Amber anyway. I just pleased that she actually did survive this and hoping that it really is a wake up call for her.
@oldwomanranting Жыл бұрын
I don’t think that she is lying and I know that it had to be scary, but it is very timely. Amber holds on to stuff to use to her benefit. She will wait for years like she did when admitting she couldn’t bathe n 2019. She isn’t a monster but she is a master manipulator. When you can’t be a victim as evidenced by Destiny’s story time, you share a horrific but truthful story to sway the narrative in your favor. Jus’ sayin’ and calling a spade a spade.

The two number one things you can do for your teeth is eat less sugar and treat with fluoride. I am NOT someone who is anti-sugar, but it does feed the bacteria that decomposes the teeth and leads to cavities. Fluoride helps with preventing decalcification and cavities. Flossing and brushing helps with the gingivitis too

She has had cancer and multiple other health issues ALL related to her weight plus, her waking up every morning at over 500lbs is somewhat of a miracle and now she is telling us that choking on a potato is her "wake up call" that her weight can kill her...smh and she still eats foods that she is NOT supposed to eat. I would love to see her change and actually lose the weight and survive but, sadly I doubt she will until she gets herself in an inpatient program.
@PennyLynnBettorf Жыл бұрын
@Ariadne I wouldn't say furious I'd say frustrated. She has done the same things over and over again. The thing is as she gets older at that weight her chances of survival are going down every day. This comment is bound to be a longer one-sorry, I'm not sorry. 😂 I'm sitting here listening to her and very quickly found myself in this position that happens pretty damn frequently *[mainly when it's someone online/on social media talking or sharing something in the comments]* where it becomes challenging to either refocus or primarily focus on feeling sympathetic for the person speaking/sharing something because I'm *that* frustrated with their almost always flippant, reckless, irresponsible, inconsiderate, selfish, foolish/ignorant, and careless use of a word/term that *A:* has a lot of weight behind it, *B:* is very particular as to what it means and entails, and *C:* should not get used or tossed around as if there is little to no importance that a person has received an official diagnosis of that word/term, adequately comprehends the meaning of the word/term and its various criteria and/or characteristics, or both. One of the words that such a baffling amount of people throw around like it's nothing, including Amber, during this clip/video, are “trauma” and “traumatic.” The words “triggering” and “triggered,” although they did not come up here, are regularly used in the same damn way. Look, as someone who knows what it is like to choke on something precisely like Amber experienced *[not because I forgot to chew-still, though],* which occurred when I was a lot younger and out to eat with my family at Applebees, where I went to take a bite of a mozzarella/cheese stick and before I know it the entire thing of cheese sucked back into my throat *[my dad had to either beat on my back or give me the Heimlich-I can't remember which one it was, ultimately],* I understand first-hand just how scary something like this is for a person-it’s even more “fun” in front of an entire restaurant of people, lol. However, there is an *undeniable* and *massive* difference between something that was “a little scary,” “extremely scary,” or “terrifying,” and something genuinely “traumatic.” Trauma *[AKA: something you experienced that was traumatic]* has a *serious* and *overall* impact on a person’s entire day-to-day life and how they function, especially in the initial stages of trauma and untreated trauma. When I choked on that cheese stick long ago, did I experience a period where I became hesitant to eat cheese sticks and almost overly cautious while I ate one? Fuck yeah, lol-that didn't last for long, though. Did I become so fixated and overcome with fear from what happened to where I couldn't eat anything due to an overwhelming fear that I would choke again? *No.* Was my life uprooted and shaken up as if someone threw it in a cocktail shaker where everyday actions and responsibilities were suddenly too much to do? *No.* I can guarantee that nothing like those two examples happened to Amber, either. It's one thing to personally and internally question whether or not you have trauma. Although, given how many people nowadays typically attempt to self-diagnose themselves with anything and everything, especially in the manner that you'll constantly witness, I would suggest that most people refrain from entertaining those thoughts past the point of going in to see a mental health professional once you start to question it. However, it's an entirely different thing and situation to tell hundreds, thousands, or millions of people publicly that you experienced something traumatic, that you have/deal with trauma, that something “triggered” you, etc., when you haven't received a trauma diagnosis from someone in the mental health field who is qualified and allowed to diagnose people after they've seen them for a considerable amount of time. Regardless of all of this frustrating, unacceptable *[no matter how “harsh” that might seem],* and destructive *[it may be inadvertent/unintentional; however, when people aren't putting any effort into doing and not doing what should be “common sense” to them, especially for a society that claims to be more accepting, caring, and conscious of mental health as a whole]* nonsense that happens ad-nauseam these last several years, I do feel for Amber and hope that she genuinely follows through and becomes dedicated to doing whatever it is she needs to do to be her best and most healthy self and live a more fulfilling life-it all starts within.
