Part of her problem is she expects the ER to diagnosis her, once they feel it's not life threatening at that moment they want her to go to her doctor because they need to move on to people that are in life threatening situations. They have people coming in from auto accidents, other type accidents, shootings, stabbings, people that are actually having strokes, heart attacks and so many other issues. I feel for her but the ER is not the place to expect the care she wants.

So I posted this on a reaction channel page but I wanted to share my medical pov here too if that’s ok John! As a doctor, what I think she’s referring to is something called atelectasis. It’s generally an incidental finding on chest x rays and is usually asymptomatic. Sometimes people don’t breathe to their full capacity due to mobility issues, obesity, etc. (obesity hypoventilation is actually a thing). Because of that the lower parts of the lung often don’t expand as much as the upper and with time they can basically remain “saggy” and collapsed, ie. Not ventilated. This is super common in a person her size and is likely not the cause of her symptoms but atelectasis can cause low grade fevers and occasionally shortness of breath if it gets bad enough. The only way for her to get rid of it is to work on rehabbing her lungs basically, to try to fully fill them when she breathes and re-expand those bottom parts. Can be done with the aid of weight loss and a tool called an incentive spirometer. This isn’t really as dangerous as it appears and I feel for her fear, but also true lung collapse is a medical emergency and I don’t believe that’s what’s happening to her or her doctor and the ER would never have let her go home. That’s my two cents

The keys I use, which may not work for everyone, are: While Googling your symptoms isn't a recommended thing, asking Google "why am I..." Leads you to either Mayo Clinic or WebMD. Both very credible and simple places to explain medical problems in human terms. I used those to explain to my primary care doctor about my inability to eat. He got me back on regular food and a different medication in 2 days. I also work on what I eat. I amped my protein intake and vegetables, less carbs. If I eat more carbs? It's a sign of mania and I need to be extra careful. If Amberlyn is as in tune as she claims, she'd work smarter not harder on what works for her. Paying attention is great. Couple of points: first, her flip flopping between "at my weight" and "everyone" is kind of a PSA for people, that they can't dismiss what she's going through as a fat person issue. Second - the filming might be helping her organize her thoughts so she can figure out what to do. I had a partially collapsed lung when i had covid. I recovered with no permanent effects. However when it reinflated it was seriously one of the most painful things i've ever experienced.

Hardly anyone is dismissing it as a fat person issue, she seems incapable of acknowledging that her bad choices led to this. She can say she knows all day long, but her actions show different. She won't take accountability and change so long as she can also point to skinny people experiencing the same things she does. She'll just keep comparing and excusing herself and calling anyone who mentions her weight as a factor a fat shamer until one day she films her last vlog

At 70lbs over weight I went into the ER with extreme abdominal and back pain. They dismissed it at as gas/indigestion as a result of my weight/bad diet (even though my diet wasn't bad). I went in another 4 times with the same pain. They did a bed side ultrasound and they could not find any gallstones. I was convinced based on my symptoms I was having gallbladder attacks and they would not listen. I went to see my normal physician and he said you can have attacks even without gallstones. He said we should just go ahead and have my gallbladder removed. I had it removed in 2012 and I have never had an issue again. I also had knee pain and shifting issues for 15 years. I knew something wasn't right and I had doctor after doctor dismiss it is early onsite arthritis due to my weight. Out of all those doctors none of them ever suggested imaging until a new doctor I had this past year. Finally got an MRI and I had a torn meniscus. I had surgery to repair the tear and I have been good since. Its just crazy to me that I probably had that tear since high school (Im now 36) and I lived with it this long. I should have advocated for myself! I know better now. I absolutely own up to what the excess weight may be doing to my body but all health issues shouldnt be wrote off due to weight. I wish it was a system that could be fixed but I think we are long ways away from change!
@theshadowfax2392 жыл бұрын
Sounds like everything went just how it should in your gallbladder situation, ERs are for emergency situations, and with no physical proof (which are tests and imaging) of a gallbladder attack, you weren't in an emergency situation, (and as much as people think it is, pain is not an emergency situation) so going to your doctor to clinically assess you for a deeper problem that is non-emergent with completely correct and you got the standard course of treatment. I see no issue with the treatment you got. Anybody at any weight would have got that treatment at most ERs, You don't have to believe that everything that is pleasant that happens to you is due to other people discriminating against you. You got very normal, standard ER care, and wasn't discriminated against in that instance.

I should not have to go into the ER, tell them I believe I am having Gallbladder attacks and them dismiss it as indigestion and suggest I adjust my diet. And yes extreme pain is an emergency situation especially if you do not know the source of the pain. They had to give me Dilaudid in order to subside my pain, that is not indigestion/weight related.

So I am a relatively small person, at 5’3 and 126 and I also have lupus, crohns and Gastroparesis with a gastric stimulator and I just was in the ER and admitted to the hospital for belly rest and iv fluids. In the ER I got an X-ray and CT and I too was found to have partially collapsed lungs and same, at the base; I too, was not informed by the ED and it was only found and acknowledged by my surgeon at an outpatient appt a week later. There are many things that can cause this, in ambers case it’s likely her weight, in my case it was a combo of autoimmune disease and so much anesthesia for all my surgeries. To be honest I am not totally affected by it, I just feel like I can’t get a deep breath all the way in. I guess I make this point to say that these things happen, both the collapsed lung and the ER not informing you of issues, that’s why you always follow up with your pcp. The ED is a busy place and radiology reports are often not complete or done quickly and any findings usually need to be further checked. I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that she was probably perfusing ok and so they didn’t address it more there and only would’ve been told to return if symptoms got worse. I don’t really know how to take amberlynn bc this is her doing and there’s not a quick and easy fix which she seems to want and also doesn’t want to acknowledge the why here. It’s incredibly frustrating bc I wish I had a “simple” or straightforward fix. I just have a hard time with a large show of compassion for her at times. Maybe I’m horrible for that, I don’t know. I do care bc I don’t want anyone to be ill or bad off but she just makes it difficult sometimes.

They didnt ebem do a scan for 2 years. They finally did an X-ray, which the GP said was fine. I pushed for a referral to an MSK team, and the physiotherpaist there reviewed the x ray with me. My pelvis isn't connected at the front. The amount of time its been left untreated means I have loads of scar tissue in my SI joints and OA in both hips. At 27. I asked if it was because of my weight. In hid words, whilst the weight will have contributed, there is no way the weight will have caused my pelvis to disconnect at the front there, and the main driving factor in the worsening of my condition is the fact it went untreated for 3 YEARS.

On the point question/point about why the ER didn't mention the partially collapsed lung from her X-ray. When they take X-rays at ERs they look at them to check for "glaring" issues. Some things are not easy to notice outside of a full examination. And that usually takes sending the X-ray to a radiologist, which they do for checking. And ERs don't always have a radiologist on staff 24/7. I had a bad car accident about 25 years ago and went to the ER. They took X-rays and asked questions etc. When they asked how I was feeling I mentioned that I had a stiffness in my neck and they said that that was to be expected and they sent me home. Later that night they called and said I needed to come back in because they saw that I have a hairline fracture in one of my vertebrae. Something like that is easy to miss and NOT the fault of the ER. The ER not telling ALR about her lung could be as simple as the X-ray not getting to a professional X-ray tech at that time. Nothing malicious about it despite what ALR thinks.
@Metallomanka2 жыл бұрын
You're so kind to the people you talk about it gets annoying - eating less and moving more WORKS if you actually do it systemically. ALR's problems are 1) that she gives up on every plan and 2) she makes money of KZbin. If she quit and stuck to any reasonable regiment, she would lose weight.

I remember a scene from House, where he says "When you hear hoofbeats you look for horses, not zebras." Doctors tend to rule out and address the most obvious factors first. If a smoker complains of a cough and SOB they're going to say it's probably bronchitis and to quit smoking, not start running tests or imaging for TB and lung cancer. And since now it's apparently discriminatory and racist to weigh an obese person, they won't know if there's been significant weight changes to even support other differential diagnoses. ER doctors get it wrong a LOT of times, because they are there to address an acute issue until you see your primary doctor, not chronic ones. ERs are full enough, and if they stop to test for every little thing that MIGHT be wrong with you, you'd be there for days.

At 24:55.... I feel like THAT is ALR's biggest problem. She thinks she will end up healthy and happy, not that it's something you have to make happen. She has never figured that out yet. I don't think she will, I hope so.

She will sit there and cry over how she is treated by Dr's and cry about her fears about her health and claims she's an advocate for health all the while she's ordering take out from McDonald's or wherever else she orders from.. its just ridiculous

I was 302 lbs at my heaviest. I'm 156 now and my quality of life is night and day. I sleep better, aches and pains are gone, every aspect of my life has improved. There's not a single part of obese life that was preferable or even comparable to what is like feeling healthy and happy. Anyone who tries to say otherwise is lying to themselves, just like I was.

Some people don't make that change. My aunt has lost toes, diagnosed with heart failure, and still won't make that change. Not even try. Excuse after excuse. I hope she does make a change. At least try.

We can’t help her. She must learn to help herself.

When she’s laid up in a hospital bed dying like lifebyjen, she’ll still be like why is this happening to me.
