In light of how the world is right now, this quote has never been more perfect: It's like in the great stories Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were, and sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy. How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad happened. But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something. Even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back only they didn’t. Because they were holding on to something. That there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it’s worth fighting for. -Samwise Gamgee

My grandmother introduced me to Bilbo and the Shire at the age of four, 38 years ago, and I’ve spent my entire literary existence searching for the warmth and comfort that Tolkien created in Middle Earth, in other novels. My heart will always belong to the Shire, and to Rivendell, from the shores of the Grey Havens to the Citadel of the White Tower and beyond. I will always cherish these stories, every page of every version of every book I’ve ever owned that brings me back. I learned to enjoy reading with Bilbo and the Dwarves of Erebor, and Mr. Tolkien’s Middle Earth has been an inspiration all my years. My children, and their children, will learn to love the Shire as I have, for as long as the paper upon which the words of this masterful tale are written remains. Thank you, J.R. and Christopher, for letting the world accompany you on your journey through Middle Earth and now beyond. As Gandalf once told the Lord of the Eagles, Gwaihir: May the wind under your wings bear you to where the sun sails and the moon walks

You ever just want your day to consist of waking up in a really cozy bed with the smell of firewood and French toast in the morning, as you finally open your eyes the sunlight streams through all the circular windows in your cabin. The floor is an old creaky oak wood but it brings more nostalgia than annoyance. A convenient little cabin that invites you to the living room with the sound of crackling firewood as soon as you walk out of your bedroom. Now that the sun is up you extinguish the fire and settle down in a rocking chair facing out of a window that displays the most beautiful clover fields in the whole world. Children running around and laughing, folks walking with their family and friends, the faint sound of birds singing their morning song. And you just sit there for 15 minutes admiring it all. The day goes by with errands and events, going to the market for breads, and milk, eggs and such. And finally, a local gathering for the town feast where everyone is invited to a large tavern as the sun begins to set over the rolling hills. By the time everyone has enjoyed their food, the night is present but still young. You say goodbye to your friends and neighbors and head back to the cozy hill cabin. Your routine night pipe awaits by the fireplace where you smoke while you light and poke the fireplace to life again. Crickets slowly create an ambience throughout the night that tells you most people are asleep by now. Pipe in mouth you read a massive book called ‘the Adventures of Bilbo Baggins’ for about 30 minutes by the fire each night, settled down in a cozy leather chair. The moonlight reveals the clover fields one more time before morning, and what once was a lively vivacious town is temporarily silent as you set the pipe atop the fireplace and head to sleep. The last thing you hear is the crickets in the distance, and an occasional gentle breeze through your circular windows. All is well, and the house is furnished just to your liking. You pick up your old note keeper to write out your day as you normally do before falling asleep. You tell of the warm morning sunshine, the bright green clover fields, the laughing children and the wandering neighbors, the amazing food at the town feast and all the wonderful conversations and laughs you had whilst being there, but most importantly you emphasize how happy you are to be alive in such an amazing time and place. And you finish with, “I couldn’t think of any place I’d rather be than here in The Shire.” At last, you put the note keeper back on the nightstand, cover up in your cozy bed, and drift into a long peaceful sleep. No worries, no anxiety, no pressure. All is Well

For Tolkien, fantasy and myths could reflect deeper truth: “We have come from God and inevitably the myths woven by us, though they contain error, will also reflect a splintered fragment of the true light, the eternal truth that is with God. Indeed, only by myth-making, only by becoming a ‘sub-creator’ and inventing stories, can Man ascribe to the state of perfection that he knew before the fall.” www.thegospelcoalition.org/article/9-things-you-should-know-about-j-r-r-tolkien/ :D :D

Me, looking at the current state of the world crying: I wish none of this had happened... Gandalf, materializing into my conscience, smiling kindly: so do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us. There are other forces at work in this world, besides the will of evil. This isn't my own, I found someone who had written that on a website, but it helps quite a lot 💚

That is because LOTR is a fairy tale while GOT is more of a real life adaptation. We don't yearn for realism, we want the ethereal, the things we can't have. Magic, friendship and wonders; a cozy evening in a smial with not a care for anything. GOT is grim, nightmarish yet real, all the things you do not want to experience, everything twisted and wrong. Yet we love them both for different reasons. yay

Hope comes from the most unlikely of places. The sun shines the brightest in the morning, however dark the night was. At spring the first flower is brightest and the first fruits are the freshest. The songs of birds after winter are like water to the thirsty... And the smallest person can change the course of the future. For all those stuck inside and troubled from COVID-19 and economic crisis, may these verses encourage you. Not all hope is lost!

It was the same for me :) I was a bit worried about the level of adaptation despite many news about the progresses of filming and advertisements of the new trilogy. And my feels at the beginning of the first movie in the cinema was not only good, there was smt like misgivings, smt nagging me about these films being only a big budget money grabbing etc... I was not only happy while seeing the dark screen and hearing Galadriel's voice... I was not happy yet... and then I saw it... the green brightness of the Shire and at this moment I was bought by PJ movies :)

I truly wish I could be there at that time and see it in a theater. I was born in 2001, too late. I will never regret watching the trilogy for the first time in 2014, but it was surely less enjoyable than watching it at the cinema. Now I'm 19, and I keep watching them again and again :) Have a great day, best wishes from a random french student ;)

My friend and i loved the Lord of the Rings books. We both loved reading the books and when we both turned 12, we could watch the movies (we were 11 at the time). My birthday is on May the 15th, his May the 26th. Time flew by as we were so excited to watch the movies. When i turned 12, i got the dvd's of all the 3 films, but i made a promise to my friend we would watch them together for the first time so, i waited until his 12th birthday. As soon as we came home from school, we made popcorn and watched them all in one sitting. It was an absolute joy to watch them. We both loved gaming so when we heard that there would be coming a LEGO Lord of the Rings game, we "jumped holes in the ceiling" my mom said. We waited for what seemed like YEARS for the game to release. And when the time had finally come, we rushed to the store and bought 1 disc. As soon as we got home we put in my xBox 360 and played it every, single, day. Make homework as soon as you come home frome school? No, play LEGO Lord of the Rings. We completed it in like 2 - 3 weeks. We knew there was an upcoming move from The Hobbit. We also loved reading the books of The Hobbit so when we heard that, we couldn't be more excited. The movie got released 2 or 3 weeks after we completed playing LEGO Lord of the Rings so we didn't have to wait long. Again, we rushed home after school to watch the new movie (our moms had gotten the movies for us). We loved it. We pulled an all-nighter. Around the time when the 2nd The Hobbit movie got released, my friend got sick. We first thought it was just a simple cold so we ignored it. But he didn't got any better so, he went to the doctor and it turned out he got Stage 3 cancer. We of course were in absolute shock. In a short period of time, it got worse and worse and he had to go to the hospital. He couldn't do much except lay in bed (this was around Christmas). The 2nd Hobbit movie had just released but this time, it didn't feel good. We couldn't pull an all-nighter and watch it as we did with the previous ones. As Christmas gift, i have him the 2nd Hobbit movie. We both were so excited to watch it together, even though it had to be different this time (i hadn't seen it yet). We had such joy watching it in the hospital. A few months had passed and things still wouldn't get better. Around our birthdays, things even got so bad he had to move to an other hospital. Things went a little better, but again around November things got really really bad. He sadly passed away, a few weeks before the 3rd movie got released. I couldn't stop crying for weeks. It felt so bad to watch the movie without him. When LEGO The Hobbit came out, i played it on the exact same place as we used to play together. The soundtracks, the books, the movies, the games, it all reminds me of him. Especially the soundtracks. Every year around our birthdays and christmas, i listen to this to feel more connected again. (And Matthew, if you see this, i collected all the coins as you always wanted me to do) I miss you

Because down deep within the very marrow of your bones you know life in the Shire, this is the way it is suppose to be. It was stolen from us in Eden. The Garden of Eden was the original Shire. hugs.

The shire is in your heart. Keep it close as your family and one day, you see the lush green fields, the trickling of the water, the taste of the ripe sweet fruits, and the smell of dew of a mid-summers eve rain, that my friend, if you keep it close you will, someday, come see the shire, and if you are lucky you might be able to come just on time for teatime, don’t forget my friend.

@@Trollioli I went there last year and I recommend sitting apart from the group and have some music like this playing while you just sit there. As it was supposed to rain hard that day there were not many people. And during our tour, the sky cleared and the sun shone brightly! I could enjoy The Shire all to myself for a few minutes, making it even more magical.

“There is no real going back. Though I may come to the Shire it will not seem the same; for I shall not be the same. I am wounded with knife, sting, and tooth, and a long burden. Where shall I find rest?” - Frodo, The Return of the King, Homeward Bound We all remember this music and takes us back to 2001. Seasons of life always change, years come and go but this music will always be something that takes us back. And like Frodo says, it may be different but it is still the Shire. Thank you for this nostalgia.

Isn't he actually saying it's not the Shire? Not the one he remembers. Pretty powerful metaphor for growing up actually, I feel just like this when I go back to my childhood home... it's the same house, but the era I grew up in is gone.

@@xire7021 "You'll see when you move out. It just sort of happens one day, one day and it's just gone. And you can never get it back. It's like you get homesick for a place that doesn't even exist. I don't know maybe it's like this rite of passage, you know. You won't have this feeling again until you create a new idea of home for yourself, you know, for your kids, for the family you start. It's like a cycle or something. I miss the idea of it. Maybe that's all family really is. A group of people who miss the same imaginary place." - Garden State

It's so good to come over to the comment section and read all the amazing people who share their love for this music and these movies... I wish I could meet them all and spend an afternoon just talking with them about the books and the movies, about their memories and their dreams... Sadly I don't have any real chance, most of the people I know don't like LOTR or the Hobbit beyond one or two movies and even less the books... LOTR is my passion since I was a kid and I just wish I could share it face to face with someone else...

This is the first comment section I’ve come to where I truly want to read them all. It’s amazing to know that this music and these movies had as big of an impact on others as it did me. For a brief moment in a child’s life I was saved when I needed it most by these movies. “A wizard is never early, nor is he late. He arrives precisely when he means to.”

The BOOKS were what had such an impact on me as a boy in high school, the movies not so much and especially that travesty The Hobbit series of movies, however, I do understand how you feel.

When I was a young boy no older than 5 or 6 my parents bought a small farm in the mountains. My brother and I used to run through the clover filled woods and stop to lay on our backs in the blankets of clover. Time stood still back then. We had no worries or pressures of the world. We would lay on our backs for what seemed like hours. I sure miss those days.
