Probably the most beautiful song ever written , the demo version is even better :)

My aunt would sing this to me…she lived a hard life too and passed too early. Will always think of her.

I'm glad you discovered Judee, Cynthia. All of her songs are beautiful. She uses a lot of religious language, but is not always singing about religion!

Thanks for reacting to the often overlooked Judee Sill. For me her best song is "Jesus was a Crossmaker"

I recommended this one too.

The Jesus in question was a Mexican bandit Judee was involved with. So the reviewer who noted that one of Jesus Christ's jobs as a carpenter would be to make crosses was off - target. He shot people, thus causing crosses to appear on graves.

The story as I understood it is that it was a rumination on her ex-boyfriend J.D. Souther, who had dumped her for Linda Ronstadt, and while she was trying to deal with her anger, remembered what she had read in Nikos Kazantzakis' THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST, which posited that Jesus, as a carpenter, would have been required by the Romans to make crosses for crucifixion, before he became a religious leader and suffered on the cross himself. So her conclusion was that even the most inspirational people have done deeds they regret, and that was how she forgave him.

@@meheuck this sounds more likely, though Judee stuck to the bandit story.

Sadly, almost nobody noticed Judee's music back in the day. It's taken decades for that to be even halfway rectified.

For an even better understanding -- Judee Sill's lyrics: Love rising from the mists, Promise me this and only this, Holy breath touching me, like a wind song Sweet communion of a kiss Sun sifting through the grey Enter in, reach me with a ray Silently swooping down, just to show me How to give my heart away Once a crystal choir Appeared while I was sleeping And called my name And when they came down nearer Saying, dying is done, Then a new song was sung Until somewhere we breathed as one And still, I hear their whisper Stars bursting in the sky Hear the sad nova's dying cry Shimmering memory, come and hold me While you show me how to fly Sun sifting through the grey Enter in, reach me with a ray Silently swooping down, just to show me How to give my heart away Lately sparkling hosts Come fill my dreams, descending On fiery beams I've seen 'em come clear down Where our poor bodies lay, Soothe us gently and say, Gonna wipe all your tears away And still, I hear their whisper? Love, rising from the mists Promise me this and only this, Holy breath touching me, like a wind song Sweet communion of a kiss

Repeating myself, who me? 😁 Continuing to recommend the late Scottish singer/songwriter Jackie Leven. 'Working Alone/A Blessing' would be a nice introduction to his superb, extensive catalogue 👌

Nice string of choices. Tuck and Patti 6 minute studio version of Castles Made Of Sand/Little Wing for taking it to the upper echelon. Another good throwback is Wendy Waldman's Mad Mad Me. Others have covered it but it's always nice hearing the songwriter present their song like Judee on this one.

Dear Cynthia, you have the same name as my dear cat - Sindy - who will be 22 in December, and is still healthy and alert and playful! I'm so glad you've been prompted to discover the beautiful music of Judee Sill. She has lived and died without making much impact on the world, and her life had a number of unexpected tragic twists which led to her demise way too young. Had she lived, I believe she would have had as successful a career as Joni Mitchell - who you may also like to check out. But for now, I hope you will take a listen to Judee's almost-hit single, Jesus Was A Crossmaker - it is simply superb, and fits the unique timbre of her voice perfectly. Stay safe, and I will see you again very soon.
