With a whole load of GPU launches behind us, AMD decided join in a little late to the party with one more release, but this one is a little different as it isn't actually anything new, at least not for Asia. The RX 7900 GRE, or "Golden Rabbit Edition", is the newest card from AMD to release in the west, and we're here to have a look and decide weather or not this is a worthy option for the targeted 1440p and 4K resolutions or if you should give this one a miss.

In your price to performance chart, you have the MSRP of the GRE at $660, this is $110 too high, it's $550, and most likely why your cost per frame was so bad. Please fix this, as that is a big part of the consideration for a lot of folks when planning a purchase.

I have the same card as well and I'm having trouble deciding what to get between the 7800XT or the 7900 GRE. Both Nitro+, but the GRE only cost $20 more where I'm from.

This 7900 gre seems like a great deal, i have the 7800xt sapphire nitro plus and it still continues to suprise me with its performance, ther key with these cards is the fan curve as this will allow the card to perform at its best in all scenarios, i have just tested my 7800xt in metro exodus enhanced edition and i have raytracing on ultra and textures at extreme at 1440p with all other settings at max the gpu is set at high quality via the adrenaline software, my temps are under 60c and hotspots around 77c. The game looks stunning and plays ridiculously good at 60 fps, so the 7900 gre may well have enough power to run some demanding games at 4k with ultra settings.

That fan controller is very cool and something I've not seen before on a GPU! Maybe a bit ugly with respect to cable management but still, a very cool feature!

First time PC builder, I am looking in this price range for a GPU that will last at least 4 years. I can probably afford to spend a little more than the 7800 but I'm leaning toward this card instead of an Nvidia card because of the 16gb VRAM you get here. And if I DO ever want to use any of Nvidia's proprietary bells and whistles, I can always fire up GeForce now - I'm currently playing CP2077 on the service and it works pretty well. Does that make sense?

I have recently bought this exact Card for £569 Delivered. I'm happy and this particular Model is becoming hard to get hold of. No sooner it comes into stock - it's gone! Wait, isn't the GRE's MSRP at $549?? The Nitro+ is currently $569. If this is the case then it should be just a bit above the 7800XT on Price/Performance at $5.12

Just got the ASRock version and loving the performance with my 5700X. Peak power hits 330 watts but most of the time I see around 265 watts. 1440p gaming with med/high or max setting gets me over 100 fps on all games but Ark.... It is just under 100 fps but runs around 70% gpu usage with max settings so I am thinking a driver issue with power settings.

i have 7900xtx using 4k144 and 1440p144 and i get 90-100 Watts idle power, to help with idle power draw i use the 1440p144 monitor with the igpu of my 13700 and the power draw decreases to 12-15W idle power. Using 24.2.1 driver

The 7900 GRE is a O.K. GPU... the main problem is that a 6900 XT Nitro+ in its 4th year now, beeing as fast as a 7900 GRE Nitro+. I really dont look for a Revolution in GPUs but at least give us a decent Evolution. A lower price and a bit less watt usage is not worth waiting for 3+ years. The main problem nowdays is, that it seems to be the new standard to release GPU´s as fast as previous generations or even slower ( yes i look at you Nvidia ) for the same or even higher price.

Ive seen some benchmarks. 7800xt kinda works as approximately as 6900xt .. check more current benchmarks cause AMD just works with drivers after they sale the card :))

7900GRE with increased power limit is where its at, it was de-tuned for OEM work which is why the TDP is so low. On the custom PCB models where you can get a solid 20-25% power target bump the card rapidly approaches the 7900XT.

P S. Is DLSS a patented Nvidia process, or can AMD also benefit from it?

DLSS can only be used on NVIDIA GPU's, AMD has it's own upscaler that is open source and CAN be used by any GPU, called FSR. Support for FSR is not as widespread in games, although there are many, and the image quality is not as good as DLSS currently. AMD is in the process of rolling out FSR 3.0, which includes frame generation, and this should level the playing field a bit more, but DLSS will probably still be the better feature.

@@jakobw135 It does not, it just works out that way in that anecdote. FSR is open source in the sense that anyone can use it and modify it for use in software, but make no mistake, FSR has been developed in-house by AMD engineers, it's in every way professionally written. DLSS is more effective because it uses tweaked machine learning using tensor (AI) cores on NVIDIA GPU's, and is capable of frame generation, where frames are generated between two frames by analyzing the before and after and figuring out what would appear in between IN REAL TIME. FSR is going to have this in the 3.0 release, this technology is not easy to develop.

@@jakobw135 a notification brought me back here, and I've been thinking about the general problems with open source, and there might be some parallels between DLLS vs FSR and the larger general problems with open source, and I wonder if AMD would have approached it different, or the board of shareholders put more money into it, if it was close licensed. Regardless, it's definitely been apparent to AMD for some time that market wise, they need an answer for DLSS. RDNA 3 GPU have dedicated AI cores, much like the tensor cores on NVIDIA cards, and I think we can expect to see AMD leverage them more moving forward in the upscaling and other features, just my take.

I wonder if the GRE release is due to AMD finally having enough dies that failed 7900XT spec? Much like their cpu release of the 5600x3d, it seems AMD may be trying to utilize dies that would otherwise go to recycling. I would like to see if this card can be easily overclocked, or if it has been somehow locked to prevent it from becoming an easy competitor to their own 7900XT.

I've heard from others that it's pretty locked down. Wattage can only be increased by like 3% or something like that And I'm sure the partner cards will already take advantage of this out of the box, leaving nothing left over for over clocking

Another reviewer not disclosing that they are comparing OCed Nitro Plus version of GRE to a reference 7800 xt, coming up with worthless data and 15% improvements. Compare it to 7800 xt Nitro Plus version and the difference will be 6-7%.

1080P really comes down to the CPU more than the GPU.... At 1080 the game is CPU bound but at 1440 and 4k it becomes GPU bound. Reviewers show off CPU at 1080 and GPUs at 1440-4k If a game can push 50+ frames at 1440...You know it can easily do 80+ on a 1080.

No reason at all. But for 1080 resolution, it can be at least good for people looking for higher framerate gameplay.

@@zdenek75a it's marketed as a 4k card, that's why they go over 4k, if this card is marketed towards that but can't handle it then that is the point of the video, to address the cards value within it's promised market. There is no point going over 1080p since AMD themselves don't seem to think people will be using it for that, and if high refresh rate is the argument, then you'd buy a card that is targeted towards around 1440p or 4k for high FPS 1080p, much like this card.

The 6950 XT was and still is a beast of GPU... I loved mine and at that price point it can NOT be beat. I unfortunately had a run of bad luck by receiving 3 bad xfx cards I don't know if the company just didn't care but when I sent my first one in they sent me one back with the cooler fins bent like hell and it was throwing green screens.. The next one the backplate was messed up and I could tell someone had done been inside of it and after a few days it started again so I moved on but when it worked it was awesome 😅

What really surprises me is how the gre.. or 7k series in general.. really didn't get much of an RT uplift from 6k. CP2077 RT ultra the gre is basically tied with the 6950 XT. Gre goes from 3% faster in 4k raster to 5% faster with RT ultra. 🤷 Doesn't make sense.

He didn't want the hassle of maximizing price and I was the first one to up so boom. New GPU on the low. This is always how I get GPUs and I've never had a GPU die. Bathtub curve for the win.

@christophermullins7163 Yeah I wish AMD did focus more on RT... The 7900 XTX does it good enough at 1440P on most games you can even play Cyberpunk at Ultra RT with decent frames at 1440P. It's just most people show RT at 4k and that's were the AMD suffer the most. I sent back my 7900 xtx and got a 4090 and other than a few games I will be the first to admit it's not the worth price compared to a 7900 XTX

In my country the GRE is 600E, the 4070S is 750E, 4070Ti 800E plus and the 4070 TiS is 1000 to 1100E. So 7900 GRE overclocked it is then 😅👌🏻
