I'm so glad he came out behind the monitors and continues to make content like this. I really enjoy this content, it's not sugar coated or biased it's just objective and shines light on things 90% of reviewers don't talk about. I've yet to see anyone else talk in depth about iommu or ecc Ram. Keep up the great content! :D

1700 is a beast of a processor and value if you overclock it. It's almost unbelievable... I was expecting to pay $500 for my new 8-core chip, but then that $330 wonder revealed itself. The 7700K is faster in low-threaded games, no point in questioning. Still, the 1700 gets so damn close I find a hard time recommending it even to someone who says "I ONLY GAME". Eight cores bring so many benefits when you do any kind of multitasking it's not even fair to compare those two processors.
@sunkyupark30227 жыл бұрын
Even if you just play games, if you are that kind of person who have lots of background apps, chrome, youtube, etc etc running in the back, AMD might be a better choice. My 1700 doesn't give a sh!t how many things i have in the background.

@rich10514147 жыл бұрын
I am a programmer with a computer science degree, and I have to admit, it is hard not to fanboy over Ryzen, and it has nothing to do with the AMD badge. For christ sake, they not only managed to make their own version of hyper-threading, they did it better than intel could do, and intel has been working on it for 8 generations of iteration. This isn't even getting into surpassing Intel's undisputable IPC. Even if this platform is sticking around as long as bulldozer, AMD has nothing to fear.

Richard Smith I've seen people saying that since Ryzen is so different and new, that software is not optimized for it yet. Is that true? even if it's so different it's still the same architecture, right? How much of an improvement can we expect, if any? Thoughts?
@rich10514147 жыл бұрын
That is a simplification for an architectural difference in ryzen compared to intel, but it is only half of the story. The issue is that the OS is not treating Ryzen's cache as a victim cache. A victim cache, in order to be used efficiently, needs redundant thread creation to be minimized, while maximizing thread recycling. Not doing so will cause too much data traffic out of the relatively slow victim cache. However, thread handling can be done on an application by application bases, this is normally handled exclusively by the OS. This is actually good news, as it means optimizations can be done to show universal performance gains without applications modifying code. However, not all applications allow the OS to deal with thread handling, and go out of their way to handle that themselves. These would need to be optimized specifically for ryzen. It is also worth pointing out that the thread/cache handling itself is a learning neural network(Don't worry, it won't try to kill you... unless you deserve it). Running benchmarks back to back will likely show increasingly better and better performance. It's very difficult to quantify how much this will improve user experience, or extensive benchmarks, but it does give me a nerd-on :P
@x1c3x7 жыл бұрын
Richard Smith So possible improvements are: Arnold inside of Ryzen (which reminds me of Windows' Superfetch / Prefetch kinda..) and Windows updates.But we won't know the size/amount of improvement until we see more use of the cpus, more benchmarks and get the actual updates. And anyone on Windows 7 can only hope developers update their apps themselves, because after seeing Barnacules' video I'm pretty sure Microsoft won't release any Ryzen related updates. Also tnx for the reply :)
@rich10514147 жыл бұрын
Thankfully Windows 7 doesn't suffer from windows mishandling threads on Ryzen as much as Windows 10 currently does.

Great point on comparing Ryzen it to the days of Athlon and Pentium 4. I was thinking the same thing as I noticed if Ryzen runs at 3200mhz RAM at 4.0Ghz it pretty much is equal to the 7700k in gaming. One thing no one seems to think about is how gaming performance would look on the 1700 vs 7700k if both were running at 3ghz or 4ghz. Meaning, the only reason the 7700k seems faster in lightly threaded games is due to the clock speed advantage. Ryzen seems far more efficient.

Great video, important to note that both Sony and Microsoft will be running a Zen based CPUs in their next generation consoles, this means that most games made for next gen consoles should be inherently optimised for Ryzen... Honestly, for gamers, the Intel i7 7700k is the clear winner in pure performance for now and the very immediate future, especially when you take into account frame times, but anyone who buys a i7 7700k must accept that it is going to get very old very quickly, you are essentially buying something that will probably be considered a low end POS in a couple years. The most interesting argument against Ryzen, purely in regards to longevity in gaming performance, is the i7 6800k/6850k which are around the same price but currently beat Ryzen in most games (especially when overclocking) and due to their core count and on-chip connectivity they should age fairly well, albeit that argument starts to loose credibility, especially value-wise, when you take into account an over-clocked R7 1700 or the soon to be seen R5 line-up, and it looses more credibility when you take into account the fact that Skylake-x and the x299 platform are only 6 months away and that if Intel wants to remain competitive these products should cost less then their current counterparts... Both sides are right, both sides are better, especially if you choose to take a narrow or skewed point of view, but can't we all take a deep breath and just enjoy the moment, we finely have a competitive market and there are hard decisions to be made, there is new information coming out all the time, the PC industry hasn’t been this interesting in years, personally I am relishing in the moment and can't wait to see what the future brings... Peace

Fact is, when you see a processor (7700K) maxing out 100% on all 4 cores *sometimes*, you know the situation is only gonna get worse (for it, and better for R7). Meanwhile the differences NOW are already negligible, and that's the average - in some games the R7 performs better, in some, slightly worse. (But as Tech Deals put it, even in those few games, 150 FPS or 135 absolutely doesn't matter. And that's on 1080p. With any higher res, any difference disappears.) I'm super happy with my 1700

Level1Techs Great review guys. I like the more 'spontaneous' style, like we are sitting in the living room with you guys. One little point of criticism, I don't think that you should deduct the price of a competitive cooler from the price of the 1700. Many people can't use this cooler. If you have a large case and you want to overclock it decently then you are much better off with a D15 or a good AIO. Also, because they apply thermal grease to the CPU you have to buy some solution and coffeefilters to get it off. Maybe sooner or later you have to do that anyway but I was hoping to postpone that until I buy a new motherboard. ;) Maybe you can sell the cooler but it is hardly worthed it. I would strongly prefer a lower price and no stock cooler. I don't get those people who believe that every non highend CPU should come with a stock cooler, a cooler is almost as personal as a desktop case. Let people choose one of their own. Those who need their hand held will buy a prebuild PC (the horror) anyway.

Really, I've been impressed with what they've done and to the point that you've literally for to split hairs in comparing RYZEN 1800X to the i7-7700k. A few lower frames, but more of a CPU that equates to the upper echelon of X99. Heck, X99 can't compare against the constant (albeit small) improvements on the silicon of mainstream cores of Z170/Z270. AMD is right in the middle of it and very capable. I haven't had any intention of touching X99 since my last extreme edition QX6700. Still works, I just keep it around for gaming and a 4th system for local games... I've decided my newest VR/workstation will be based on the 1800X.

Can you clarify the model number of your Trident Z RAM? Is it F4-3200C14D-16GTZ???
@bratulis7 жыл бұрын
Even with the model number it's still not guaranteed to work the same way, especially with CL16 chips cuz you are not guaranteed that they will be Samsung B-Die chips, as those seem to work the best with Ryzen. The most likely ram to have B-Die chips are 3000/3200 freq. CL14, but those are quite expensive and also kills a lot of Ryzen value for money.
@BSEUNHIR7 жыл бұрын
That part you're naming is actually a bit faster, but it works great on Ryzen so far (at least for me). I have it at 2933 CL14 on my Prime X370. If you take ECC into account, the Ryzen 7 1700 competes with the E5-1660v4 (1200$, 8x 3.2GHz, 3.6GHz Turbo). Plus, the E5-1660v4 needs a more expensive platform to run on. Ryzen's platform has its drawbacks, as lower PCIe-Lanes, weird IOMMU groups and lack of IPMI / vPro, but if you can live with these drawbacks, you're getting almost the same performance at 1/3rd to 1/4th of the price.

From my understandng... Neural Net Prediction is kinda like a NAND flash drive that can be found HDD/SSD Hydrids and in SSD's as well, the more you run a program, the more it stores data in the flash drive, the more it access the program faster.

I'm on Sandy Bridge-E with an old Xeon E5-2670 that I picked up on eBay for dirt cheap a while back. My board is giving me some issues due to it's old age (it's an ASRock X79 Extreme6) so I think building a new Ryzen 7 system is going to be a good upgrade path for me as I do edit video and run VMs as well as game, and if I can get an 8-core for under half the cost of a Broadwell-E 8-core I think the trade off with slightly lesser gaming performance than Kaby Lake is worth it.

[12:00] I don't think the Ryzen 7 has the 6850K beat for bandwidth. Please correct me if I'm mistaken.

I agree, good first try. I'm more interested in Zen2 and Zen3 personally.

Wouldn't large caches become significantly slower? Or is it just lower levels (i.e. L3, L4) that are very large?

The reason Ryzen 5 and lower core counts have the same OC headroom as Ryzen 7 is because of the process node it's made on. The Ryzen chips are made on Global Foundries' 14nm LPP node, which itself IS borrowed from Samsung's 14 node, and here's the thing, this node is meant for smartphone SOCs, not high-powered CPUs. This is why Ryzen has a hard wall around 4 Ghz or so, but also why it can be SO efficient for what it is, 8c/16t for 65w TDP? I don't see Intel's 8 cores doing 65w TDP, they do 140w TDP. The very design characteristics of Gloflo/Samsung 14nm node determines the Ryzen's impressive performance per watt, in exchange for little OC headroom above 4 Ghz.

Hmmm. Correct me if I am wrong. Any new rig ryzen 1700 or 7700. Will be way way faster than i3-550 8gb ram w hd7470 2gb?

Really good and very insightful. Sadly as much as i wanted to support Little AMD mostly all I do is web surfing and gaming other than my Freenas setup. So I just ordered a I7-7700K /IX Hero board. Easy 5Ghz is hard to beat right now. May be next time AMD keep fighting and optimizing.

If AMD is able to keep the contract for console hardware would it not be possible to keep the console hardware closer to desktop Ryzen, reducing the delta for optimization in game ports? Especially since Vulkan is supposed to be less of a delta from the console APIs.

Based on the recent benchmarks by hardware unboxed, it seems like there is something else that is limiting the Ryzen in certain games, like far cry primal. He disabled cores so that one was running at 4:0 core setup, so that one module is completely disabled while he put the other one at 2:2 and yet they performed about identical, suggesting that the latency between the core modules is not really the issue here.

how good is ryzen for hpc computing, like machine vision, ai, simulations and such? These apps really need all the clock speed and all the "physcial" cores it can take. Are its threads equivalent to its real cores? How is its IPC?

Curious as to exactly which ECC modules you used. Were they the registered DIMMs or the UDIMMS?

Has anyone (or is anyone) going to test (any) Ryzen with a game being ran with Wine Staging? I know that this is a very niche request... But some users can only run certain games by using Wine Staging. I'd love to see if these extra cores get utilized or not! (as it would help me choose between the 7700k or the 1700) Thanks for your time!
