This is a great example of why this is one of the best Tech channels. Majority are "Here's Ryzen check out these benchmarks that mean close to jack!" Level1: "Here's Ryzen, check out these neat details under the hood that really set Ryzen apart and how it's different and why it matters."

+Level1Techs My thoughts exactly Wendell, I have no idea why AMD chose to focus so much on gaming when the CPU could easily compete on virtualization in a server environment; that's the most ubiquitous use in that market. Looking forward to seeing Ryzen get a review in the Linux channel.

So, at a glance, Ryzen is a strange product. The gaming performance seems a bit lacking, but the production performance crushes the z270 chips and matches x99. It seems the perfect demographic for these chips is "gamers who create, and creators who game", the tagline for the Radeon Pro Duo. Twitch streamers, KZbinrs, hobbyist music makers and video editors. People who game as a hobby, but it's not the primary use of their machine. Honestly I think it destroys the entire premise of x99, provided you don't need all those pcie lanes. If the only thing you do that stresses your computer is gaming, it looks like Intel is still your supreme overlord.

Their 8C/16T chips are really good for productivity and workstation uses, but not a good chip for strictly gaming purposes. No surprises though, considering most games best utilize 4 cores. EDIT: Forgot to mention how these 8C/16T Ryzen chips are not very good manual overclocking chips despite the fact the chips are soldered onto the IHS. Seems most reviewers have only been able to get them to no more than maybe 4.2 GHz.

Damn good video without the hype or the bias. First time watching you guys and you hit all the really interesting points about the AM4 platform. I can't wait to see how Vega will run on this platform especially as its memory cache management is supposedly set to take advantage of high speed 4X NVMe, which ties into the M.2 port configuration nicely. I hadn't considered the 2nd 8X slot as additional direct to CPU applications and of course you are right about 8X PCIE being sufficient for even Top tier graphics cards if you want more high speed access through the pcie slot without crippling the chipset bandwidth. What I'm really waiting to see is the Naples release, supposedly with 16 core options and single CPU boards. If they make those babies overclocked unlocked, we may see current water cooling solutions able to handle them given the 1700's 3.0GHz 65Watt TDP allowing for up to 3.9+GHz (1.3v on the curve) 16 core 32 thread workstations with a lot more PCIe lanes available. Will Ryzen finally bring gaming to the workstation as gaming moves away from low thread engines.

Looking forward to more information on IOMMU. I have purchased my R7-1700 already, but I haven't picked a motherboard because I'm waiting for word on the IOMMU. One question, could you do passthrough on the PCIe3.0 graphics card and leave the one going through the x370 to the Linux system perhaps, or is the PCIe3.0 on the same IOMMU as the USB3.0 and NVMe ports? I suppose I could dedicate those USB3 and NVMe ports to running inside the virtual machine. Very interested about the Asrock and IOMMU too. I have an Asrock motherboard on my A10-7850k and its IOMMU was all screwed up. Hoping they did better this time.

I really enjoy your videos. When you do benchmarking can you do it based on price comparison, ie compare a $500 cpu to a $500 cpu. Also can you do some of the more geeky real world tests such as compiling, say the Linux kernel. Apache/Nginx/mysql tests. Performance per $ spent is more important to me than absolute performance as I never buy the highest end parts due to cost/value. Also virtualisation testing would be fantastic.

I'm more looking at the Asus 370 pro. Looks like I only give up two USB ports but the board itself is cleaner. But having top support for things like the iommu and PCI pass through is important to me so I may just give in and get the hero. I'm happy about the ECC though. You can't get 3200 ecc but it does mean it will eventually end up as next years server. But who knows.. might just bite the bullet and get the six core ryzen in August if it clocks better for games. Hopefully they get hardware pass through working. BTW any recommendations for 1x video cards for when you are running pass through?

Slightly off topic - I think a really cool video after the dust settles on the Ryzen bench-marking would be *The best bang for the buck CPU deal for under $500* . Since the 1800x sets the bar for the new /retail side of $499, what about older but yet still viable chips? I'd say a pair of Xeon E5-2670 V3's could be a contender: 24 cores / 48 Threads at 3.10GHz, about 450 on eBay?

I'm a bit disappointed to hear Level1Techs perpetuating the myth that x8/x8 PCIe lanes do not matter for SLI. I know the issue is very much under the radar as far as "professional" reviews go, but x8/x8 SLI can bring significant scaling and performance issues at high native resolution (let's say 3840x2160 and above). Some games like DOOM show almost no SLI scaling at all on 8 lanes and generally speaking games that use some form of Temporal AA can suffer significantly if there isn't enough bandwidth for the GPUs (Witcher 3, R6 Siege, DOOM off the top of my head, there are others too). This is somewhat well-known within the user community and benchmarks can be found in the relevant sections of the relevant forums, though no professional outlet seems to have picked up on it or considered it worthy of a closer look.

bumperxx1 You realize that the single core performance will stay the same on the lower core count chips right? So $200 4core/8thread cpu that's only 15% slower than the $350 7700k in gaming scenarios

Are the IPC the same between all the ryzen 7's? I've seen the 1700 able to clock as high as 3.9 while the 1800x only got to 4.05 and the benchmarks between the 2 were nearly the same for single core performance.
