Awesome. Just installed my 1950x 17 seconds ago on a Foxconn. Zero problems when following this method.

Oh why I didn’t watch this video before?!? I’ve just addressed this issue last week and it almost drove me crazy! I thought the socket was broken, spoiled or something like that. Hope this could help anyone else. Thumbs all way up for the tip!

If it was easy for you, then you didn't have the problematic short bolts. Read my comment in my experience.

No its actually garbage. Again AMD disapoints

everybody can have own, you too and I respect that even if you publish a little bit strange post... but AMD does not disappoint at all, look at the market and how intel products changed since ryzen appearing... badly designed foxconn tr4 socket does not change the fact that the threadripper platform (I and II generation) is big step forward in PC HEDT world

People forget about equal distribution when threading a cpu before screwing the socket in place. T4 is so much better than older socket types. You guys have it easy.

The problem is that even on the first bolt, if you turn the opposite way, you don't hear or feel that "click" because the bolts are too short with the CPU installed. With the covers, it's fine. I had to push down on the wrench HARD while turning it to start the threading. Once I feel it start to thread in, I had to do the same to 2 and 3 - push down very hard while turning to even start threading. After I start threading all the bolts, then I tighten down 1, 2, then 3 in that order. Your socket doesn't have the problematic short bolts that I (and others) have.

Pushing down hard on those is fine. You are not going to damage anything.

I'm having to do the same thing right now. It's freaking me out and pissing me off. If I bend a thread, I'm calling someone because that's not even my fucking fault at this point. This processor better be worth it. Wish me luck...
@HardOCPTV

Just make sure you have pressure pushing up on the backplate and you will be fine. Those threads are REAL tough.

I have to push hard too on all 3 bolts , and I don’t hear click at all. I think my socket has defect, one pin on motherboard higher than others.

Thanks in building one knows to tighten opposite corners first but these sockets are quite tricky, this helped reinstalling my 1950x and I hope it works for the new processor. I hope they re designed this socket.

The way I install screws is largely the same in this video but the one key difference that is preferable in my opinion is the following after the screws have been started as demonstrated in the video. I do not torque screws after they have all been merely started, I turn them all to the point that the screw head just comes in contact with the frame. The objective is to first get the frame to lay fully flat. After that I will torque down the screws. This is the same principle you use for mounting wheels on your vehicle. You get the wheel to a fully even contact position and then you torque in the approved sequence. So to be clear I am using a three step method instead of a two step method. In many years of observing mechanics I usually see them using the two step instead of the three step method. I've never liked it and I think it is the wrong way to complete the job. Step 1: Gently seat the thread of each screw/nut one half to one turn Step 2: Turn screw or nut until full contact is made with no overt pressure Step 3: Sequence torque screw/nut to spec Job done.

We had a customer bring one of these in today. He couldn't figure out why his PC wouldn't POST. Turned out he didn't install the CPU right. It's nice to see a higher-end build every now and then as we usually end up getting budget and mid-range stuff to service.

The pins were good. Good thing it's LGA as the CPU cost more than the motherboard.

On Lotes socket there is no need to do this. However, the Foxconn sockets need more or less a method like the one you demonstrated.

I can't do that on my socket - in the corner it says H6T2 not H6N2, when you close it there is still a good 2-3 mm gap unless you push down on the top with your finger or really hard on the screw
@HardOCPTV
@HardOCPTV 7 жыл бұрын
I have another here that is laser printed with H6C2 and have no issues. Pushing down on the socket is not going to hurt anything. The TR4 is NOT delicate once you have the CPU carrier in place.

The amount of force that I had to use surprised me when I watch other youtubers (including you) it seems like they put very little force down to get that first screw I really have to put my shoulder into it I have no issues after its down, and wouldn't rma because of it. It just makes me second guess if I'm doing something wrong. I have different mobo for another build coming in tomorrow ill reply if its different I guess

Your experience is not unique. I have one of those boards as well. An Asus Zenith Extreme, no less. Was surprised at how much force was needed to push down to start catching the threads. After they catch, I do the same for 2 and 3, then torqued them down once they were all started .
@disekjoumoer

I had the same experience as you and +Guy Techie on an Asus Zenith Extreme. I really had to push physically hard, say about 4 to 8 pounds, to get the Nr 1 screw to catch. I finally looked at the frame with a steel rule placed on the back and low and f***ing behold the frame was slightly bent upward. Minimal but enough to make it, in my eyes, a defective product. RMA'd it and still waiting for the return, one month on.....

I just switched from EK to XPSC for my waterblock im getting at lease 12c lower difference ..wtf..-- but I noticed when I threaded the screws for the xpsc (there really long) one of the top screws sat at an angle (had to slowly torque it back into place to get the plate on) I guess the mounting hole was off funny .. this socket is hell ..

@HardOCPTV 7 жыл бұрын
Make sure you have your tool inside the head of the screw well so it does not slide out. Do not be afraid to push down hard on the screw. I have had some that were a bit more stubborn, but as long as the tool does not slide out, you are not going to damage that socket pushing down. Make SURE the CPU is slid all the way down into the carrier slot, and make SURE the CPU is sitting in the socket properly.
@AbeAbrahamian
@AbeAbrahamian 7 жыл бұрын
HardOCP TV thanks. It was pushed all the way down in the slot. I just had to push pressure on the first screw and to worked. I mean a lot force but it worked.
@HardOCPTV
@HardOCPTV 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it can be a bit scary, but as long as the tool is controlled, you can "beat the shit" out of that socket. It is built like a tank.....just do NOT ever touch any of the pins down in the socket for any reason whatsoever.
@AbeAbrahamian
@AbeAbrahamian 7 жыл бұрын
HardOCP TV thanks. I did not touch the pins. I did seat the plastic cover again to test before I slid the processor back on. Pins looked good when I looked at it.

looks the correct way to do, but if the screws are really too short this wont work either, too much force is never good.

It is really hard to screw up as long as you don't touch any of the pins.

I guess the fault lies with AMD instructions. While I normally start each fastener before going around and torquing them all down, I also usually follow the directions. Thanks for sharing the pro tips. We all make mistakes. Im glad I didn't make this one. This video is gonna save a few people hundreds of dollars.

If someone follows the directions perfectly and it doesn't work that's not user error.

Technically, not user error, its a slight design oversight. but, as shown in the video, someone decided to mess around until they found a solution. So shh.
