Some people speculated that gaming on ThreadRipper is going to be horrible but i can't seem to make those people understand what the point of this chip is, its not to game and you can game on it but it would be stupid to waste that much money for just gaming. Rather go with the Ryzen 5 1600x for gaming

The only ThR chip that has serious potential in games is 1900x simply because of those PCIe lanes if you want to use 3 graphics cards at the same time then it makes sense. Sure, AMD and NVidia don't even support setups like these any longer, but if you want to build overkill gaming setup, it's a good choice I guess, at 4k most of the work is done by GPU anyway

Something that's not getting much attention is AVX performance. I've read that threadripper requires 2 cycles for one AVX instruction whereas intel CPUs require only 1 cycle. I don't know if threadripper's frequency and voltage go down when doing AVX work - intel's CPUs do so because AVX generates MUCH more heat - but it's only like 15% down. That means intel CPUs should win big time in programs that make use of AVX a lot. There aren't a lot of tests that confirm this and I would like to try it myself. Unfortunately I can't just buy all those CPUs and other hardware required just for a test.

Ugh. Why do people do gaming benchmarks at 1080p? Someone who is dropping $1000 on a processor is probably running a 4K, or at least 1440p, monitor. When you get into those numbers the GPU does a lot more of the lifting, so the differences between different processors shrinks dramatically. Not having benchmarks at those resolutions in misleading. And that's not even getting into multiple GPU setups, which the extra PCIE lanes will help out with, or VR.
@caleer85677 жыл бұрын
They run 1080 as it shows a difference that isn't GPU bottlenecked.
@roikhanulyahamidan99787 жыл бұрын
Ryan Wheeling yeah but people who want to buy the product also want to see which one perform best at higher res, even if the GPU being the bottleneck the 1% and 0.1% will shows the difference
@TaylorHuston7 жыл бұрын
I think people would want to see how it performs in the situations it's most likely to be used. In this case, someone who's dropping $1k on a processor is probably dropping a lot on a GPU (maybe even more than one) and high res monitor as well. I'm not saying 1080p benchmarks don't have their place if you want to test theoretical performance, but I am much more interested in real world results.
@caleer85677 жыл бұрын
It really makes less than 1 frame difference, images.anandtech.com/graphs/graph11697/89959.png and that is really in the margent of error zone anyways.
@krazyfrog7 жыл бұрын
If you care about high res then you could pick any one of these and it wouldn't make a difference. Only at lower resolution does the CPU make a big impact on frame rate. It's primarily to show the difference in CPU performance and also useful if you're a low resolution high frame rate gamer.

5:08 Why are people "unlocking" the power before removing the Styrofoam protector? That's supposed to come off first and THEN you unlock the power. This will prevent the CPU from falling out and possibly being damaged, like Hardware Unboxed did. Not that he damaged it, just to clarify, but it did fall out due to him "unlocking" first.

Very good and surprisingly comprehensive review, given the video format, which is more often than not resulting in compression to the death (Hello, Linus!). You guys just earned my respect yet again, great job. One thing to contribute on the topic of cooling, though: Yeah, Threadripper is getting hot, that's just due to the nature of so many high-clocked cores on current manifacturing processes. You want to be really careful with the application of thermal paste, too, though, if you want to make sure that everything is being cooled to every part of the cooling chain's full potential. The "blob in the middle"-approach does only work well, if you apply a rather generous amount of paste, since the IHS is so gargantuan, while also not being square. Anyway, I shall be interested in any improvements, truly compatible cooling solutions might bring here. Oh, and also: For everyone not needing the clockspeeds at their maximum, undervolting should be a very attractive option, because of Ryzen's efficiency around the 3 Ghz mark. Looking forward to any non-X models because of that :)

@hardwarecanucks do you have a source for the info you mention @11:30 (adobe can't utilize more than 18 threads)?
@hiddenworldsmultimedia93806 жыл бұрын
Adobe can (from what I have seen), only currently access 10 PHYSICAL cores, any more than that, and the law of diminishing returns hits...instead of an even spread of efficiency based on cores, it drops with each core after 10. sooo, instead of say, a 5x improvement, it drops to 1.5x per core.. Also, adobe has not updated their hardware specs of premiere, so it is still stuck in the 700 GTX series era, MAYBE 900. I did some research on this, while planning a future 1950x build. Since going to the CC system, they have had less of a "reason" to do any real background optimization.
@ChessBoxin7 жыл бұрын
Why only 2666 speed? OW has a higher avg with ram speed I think btw. And by the way Premiere only using 18 threads... is that even during live plays like scrubbing through footage and applying effects? I have a the 1800x and am I not going to see a smoother live playback with threadripper?

Are you and Dimitri looking at upgrading to the thread ripper family for you main editing pc's, maybe 1950X's? Also I guess for the memory presets of local and distributed wont matter on those smaller work loads...I believe thread ripper takes up to 236GB of ram or something stupid like that so I would imagine a workload that may takes over 40GB plus might use that feature with a more telling result. I would say my biggest interest would be the 1900X followed by the 1950X I would save the 200 bucks hopefully on a motherboard and put that towards the 1950X over the 1920X. As far as the 1900X if a person is primarily gpu heavy you get the platform as well as the pcie lanes/memory capacity at almost half the cost.

@yuliatarkova54457 жыл бұрын
if your including Tax in that yea for me here in NH if i got threadripper from Newegg its only $999 (this also depends on if your doing a bundle) For example the combo that i bought was about 1500 or so with 2 8gb = 16 GB of DDR4 Ram at 3200 with a X399 Gaming 7 from Gigabyte that also supports TR = 1500 ish maybe a bit less but still saving quite abit of money as a combo well not really just a $20 dif in savings also depends on if you decide to fast track it as well :P but Amazon tends to be OP on some things just like Besbuy is like the worst place imo to buy a graphics card and other computer parts due to the fact that they tend to sell em extremely high where you can find it very cheaply on newegg or Ebay/Amazon in some cases. its like Newegg with the Titan their selling a refurbished one for $1300 where as i could get the same one for about 300 bucks cheaper elsewhere idk if that changed since my last titan buy but you'd be better off going to Nvidia and biting the bitter pill and get the titan black/x for 1200 a piece. than waste 1300 on a refurbished one that would eventually croak or be DOA.

so just to help a bit. I am 3d artist and rendering in 3d max is what I do. What you are seeing is correct. Memory speed does not impact most 3d rendering software. I have tested this for years. Usually the scene is posted to the memory once held there and access small bits of data as it computes the image. After effect encoding works completely differently. .... As an added note cpu clock speed of ex 3.0 ghz 3.3ghz will only see minor upgrade usually as well, for every 10% overclock you might get a 5% bump in render..... In 3d softwar there is still a lot operations that are single threadded so that clock speed help there though.If you need any ohter help I am always here.
