This movie inspires a greater emphasis on one's practice of kenjutsu/Iaijutsu. But what I really love about it is how simple and genuine it is. Its a story about a samurai who has no vendettas or plans, he's just a really nice guy who wants to make everyone around him happy. That's an oddly rare story for any movie.

The precision movement reminds me of close order drill in the Marines, strangely. I guess they do share a bit in common. I was reminded of movements with my rifle - present arms, order arms, etc.

It’s the reason I have been practicing Musō Jikiden Eishin-ryu iaido for a year and a half now. The first practice I watched left me with the same impression. That it was very similar to Marine Corps rifle drill. Semper Fi from a 1/6 Marine (2008/2012)

It's called passion and dedication. You should have some if you're training anything. Learning and trying to understand what are you actually doing usually comes with it, because you realize it's all for nothing without proper understanding. Katana wielding and physical stuff are only the smaller part when you're training anything that originated from Koryu or that is considered a Martial Art and after years of training there are still some days when it just comes to you that you know nothing. We can only be grateful to the simple mortal Japanese people for cherishing their culture and their selflessness.

cntd The kata is originally a Goju one but all the other styles have thier own version of it(I prefer the Shito version). The goju stylist knows that the kata is the same but different and if he is 3rd dan or up(most likely much higher grade as the differences are technical mostly) he should be able to pick the style of each contestant. He may be able to pick the style if he is a lower grade but has experience in other styles. WKF also have a standardized list of kata for competition

cntd. A better example is if a Karateka is at an open styles tournament( lets say Gojuka)and is watching kata preparring for his own performance. He is the last contestant of 6 and they have all performed Seinchin kata and its all different but still the same kata. the other 5 could be Shitoryu,Shorinryu,Shotokan,Kyokoshin,Wadoryu and of course him being Gojuryu. The fist 3 styles and Goju are very old and all date to Okinawa while Kyokoshin and Wado are modern variations cntd

by your handle I take it you study Aikido,so here goes an explanation you may understand.If you study Aikikai style of aikido you will be learning that styles set of responses and what that teacher likes the best so you wont be using Ki Society style or even a different teachers bent on Aikikai,or Daito Ryu.If you are good enough at your art with a depth of knowledge of other similar styles you will know what style and even school another adept is using.
@frostzxs12 жыл бұрын
That's not correct. KSR is much older then just term "iaido". KSR is complex traditional koryu: it contains kata of iaijutsu, kenjutsu, bojutsu, naginatajutsu, ryoto, sojutsu, jiujutsu and some others...but most techniques integrated with each other and based on same principles. It means that you wouldn't understand KSR iai techniques without understanding basic KSR-kenjutsu techniques. Other example: some advanced techinques are synthesis of iai- and ken-jutsu.(sorry for bad english)

Which was not uncommon for that age. Back then, roads like we know them in the west were rare in Japan and usually only existed between the main centers of population. A fairly well off individual could usually afford a Horse, but even so, such was expensive in upkeep. Tails such as the one he is walking were more common and were usually just wide enough for either two Horses to pass each other or for individuals to move past each other walking as he is doing.

It''s very good, it's inspired in real Iaido, and we can see focus, calm and care in the details. That's why some japanese movies are so awesome, because they get inspired in reality, not in fantasy tricks. So, it's a very accurate Iaido. Anyway, consider he's a performer, not 8th Dan, just check some 8th Dan videos to get more ideas about the way of the sword.

@daveyowful Nothing funny about the scene, the katas he performed are from one of the oldest and more respected school's in Japan called Katori Shinto Ryu. And no you cant be a student of this unless you are in Japan sicne they are a proper koryu and only teach the arts to a traditional apprentice. So show some respect.

you are right and wrong.certian techniques are used almost exclusively by certian styles so when a person uses x technique you can say with certanty that he belongs to this style or that.If more kata are displayed with varying technique then the real expert can EXACTLY identify the style right down to the lineage. Having said that any technique that works is a good one and people who "invent" thier own style clump them all together into a bastardized style
