Amedee Mereaux - Grande Etude Op.63 No.45 "Scherzo alla napolitana"

Hm.
Difficult. Just crazy difficult.
This piece difficulty is the second of le preux.
It was not only just difficult.
It have really dangerous risk. Because this piece leaps(jumps)
is just ignorantly difficult. Maybe this piece is one of most difficult mereaux etude.
And! Now i have two pieces of mereaux.
It's No.59:Elegie, No.60.
I will upload this pieces soon. And i'd like to ask you a question.

안녕하세요! 하..... 드디어 메로 스케르초를 쳤는데..
후기를 남기자면... 일단 쉽게 말한다면 곡 난이도가 너무 신경질나게 어려워요ㅜㅜ 도약이 하나같이 너무 무식하게 어렵고, 초반부분도 듣기에는 산뜻하고 쉬워보이지만 리스크가 매우매우 커서 굉장히 어려워요. 어렵단 말로는 부족할정도로 힘듬을 느낀곡이 아닌가 싶습니다... 연습기간은 대략 4~5개월이였네요.(그래도 많이 부족)
어쨌든, 드디어 스케르초랑은 이제 바이바이 하고. 남은 메로곡이
59번과 60번이네요. 이것들도 진짜 하나같이 어려운데 큰일이네요 ㅠㅠ 아 그리고 다음연상때부터 영상에 악보랑 같이 흘러나오게 한번 해볼까 하는데 어떨까요? 메로는 모르는사람이 많으니까 말이죠.

Dude... I don’t think you even realized what a historical feat you’ve just accomplished here. This is easily *easily* one of the most difficult pieces in the world of piano, and you have conquered it in such an amazing way! I appreciate that you didn’t tense up your hands/fingers in the beginning. It’s easy to think that a Scherzo like this must have a hand-breaking tempo, but when you make it slower and more casual, it feels like I’m going on a walk in the park :) Not to mention, that ending... That ending was INSANE!!! I didn’t even think it was possible, but you did it perfectly!! And the melody came out very clean!!! Your interpretation of this piece is perfect and one of a kind :) I don’t blame you for never playing this piece again. It definitely looks like it can cause injury if not played properly. Regardless, thank you so much for this masterful performance :)

Beethoven did not play the sonata. Liszt was the first one to play it. Ever. That we know of, that is. IDK if Beethoven could have, but there is no record.

Now that I've seen the other two performances currently on KZbin, and the notated score, I have to say that I agree with the commenters who described this post as historic. Yours is the first genuine performance of this piece. The other two are approximations from two opposite directions -- accurate but literally mechanical, and human but sadly a mess. Your performance here is groundbreaking, and maybe also fingerbreaking. It's actually musical! It's not perfect, but you're close enough that it doesn't need to be. I really look forward to hearing you as you go beyond the solar system into musical interstellar space!

Congrats man. You made my day. It's a great human performance (at midi recording you find on YT played in lesser than 4 minutes you may conclude this is ugly music whereas played properly in 5 minutes it's a masterpiece). If you don't look at your hands you may even conclude it's not that hard and this is a compliment to you as it means you have full command of this, possibly one of the hardest pieces of piano history, more than Alkan's masterpieces.

BenZ143 I mean the solo Totentanz was a tremendously difficult piece to play on an old out of tune upright piano with broken keys. And obviously she has played the solo Rach 3 and El Contribandista without flaw. Not that any of that is necessarily as difficult as this piece, but I’m willing to bet that if she can play pieces of that caliber with such perfection and lightness, that she would undoubtedly be able to learn this piece with time

Exactly. I think he also played el contrabadista on an old upright in London. She made a few mistakes but it was still amazing. Hard pieces with repeated notes are extremely difficult on uprights

You can defenitely hear the Chopin, Liszt, and Alkan influence. Very typical of the Romantic Era, and just as insanely technically challenging for absolutely no reason other than to just make it hard. 😂 You played this very well. Right hand fingerings are: 51-3-4-3-2-4-3-1-5-4-1-4-3-1-5-4-1-4-3-1-5-4-1-5-4-1-4-3-1-5-4-1-4-3-1-5-4-1-4-3-1-5-4-1235-2-5-4-1-5-4-1235-2-5-4-1-5-4-1235-1-5-4-1-5-4-1 4:38 I prefer not to use 24 on those thirds, it doesn't make sense to me to jump further than you need to. Use 12 on the thirds, and 13 on the fourths and tritones. The few three note chords should be played as follows: 123 (DFG) 124 (FGB) 234 (ABD, this makes it easier to catch the next octave because it's so much farther down compared to the one before it.) 123 (BDE) 4:45 For THAT ONE PARTICULAR THIRD between E and G#, I use 24 because it makes it easier to catch the next octave because it's so much farther down than the one below it. 4:47 See my notes on 3:22.

I disagree with your comment on 4:38. Yes, you have to jump further if you play the thirds with 23 or 24, but it's much harder to jump this quickly from thumb to thumb. Playing with different fingers makes this section a whole lot easier. Btw are you going to post your performace at a bit higher speed? I'd love to see more people play this piece.

Amazing! Love watching your technique with this camera angle. Moving the front parts of the finger independently from the rest of the hand like that, with that high arc between the joints, reminds me of Ivan Pogorelich's technique. Seems to be working very precisely and efficiently for you, maybe i should try that. But seriously, the part from 4:30, especially 4:37 with the fast jumps is insane. I tried and got only about 45 seconds through! Firstly, divide the piece into sections, and learn each section individually. Learn two bars at a time and focus on the extremely difficult left hand. The right hand it much easier (until the end of course)! Try to practise each section really slowly with a metronome and speed up 1-2 bpm at a time, it’s really slow and laborious but it’s the only way I could get it up to tempo and not make it a jumbled mess of notes and key bashing. My thoughts after learning this piece so far: 0:17 is really difficult. I HAVE to use 51-41 because of my hand size. 0:25 I just use 112312 for the bottom notes, the jump of a half-step with the thumb is worth the reduced difficulty of jumping from 2 instead of 3 to the next octave. For left hand I do 51-51-51-512-1/3-2, depending on what notes are being played. 0:34 112321 so I don't have to use 2 on the bottom note and on the chord right after. 0:39 No need to play every melody note with 1. 51-2-1 will do (With 5 on the grace notes). 0:40 For the large grace note leaps, it helps to rotate the wrist like with smaller grace note leaps. 0:42 Okay, those jumps on the right hand to play the melody an octave higher are pretty difficult. 0:44 That jump can be dealt with by lingering on that "chord", as if you're slowing down to end but then going onto the next section. 151-3-2, where the beginning 1 and 5 are for grace notes. 0:50 You can also deal with that chord in the same way. 0:51 You don't need to do 5 on both the low notes. Do 5-4(31)-2 and each key gets its own finger , making things slightly easier there. 0:54 I'm the one weird guy who doesn't like changing fingers on repeated notes. I just play all the Es with 2, and the repeated notes afterwards with 11-11-21-22-11-21-33-22-12 and the other notes with 2-4-5-4-3-4-5-4-3, and the chord right after as 145. Then I spam that E with 1. 1:00 11-11-21-22-11-22-11-12-11, 2-4-5-4-3-4-35-34-35 1:03 OKAY THIS IS DIFFICULT. (I'm incapable of 52 octaves.) If there isn't an octave I play that note with 3, otherwise i play it 51. The low notes are always 2. I'm pretty sure that this part is easy for you, since you can do 52 octaves. 1:15 Normally the left hand would be a non-issue but it's hard to see where exactly to play when you're jumping constantly between 51 and 2 on the right hand. 1:16 5-431-2 for the left hand. 1:22 For that different left hand configuration, I use 5-431-24. 1:28 Starting from D#, the chromatic scale can be played 1-2-1-2-1-2, etc, if a D# is in the upper voice play it with 4. The rest of the upper voice is 5. 1:32 Left hand: 5(1)-32-12, right hand: 15-2-15-2 1:45 For the last few notes of the chromatic scale: 1-2-3-1-2-3-4-5 (Starting from A) 1:48 As the weird repeated notes guy: Right hand: 51-43-32-21-43-32-215-42-21-43-32-21-215-21-32-1235-32-32-1235-32-21-2135-31-12-1 Left hand: 51-532-1-1-5-52-1-1-5-521-3-3-5-531-2-2-5-52-1-1-51-51-2-42-51-51-2-42-51-52-1-421 1:54 As the weird repeated notes guy again: 5-5-4-4-3-3-2-2-1-1-51-4-2-2-1-4-3-3-2-2-1-1-51-2-1-1-2-2-1235-3-2-2-1-2-1235-3-2-2-1-1-2135-3-2-2-1 1:59 Linger here to build up tension. 2:00 As the weird repeated notes guy again: Play the repeated notes alternately as 51111 and 15555. 2:11 Left hand repeated notes: 14444-11111-11111-11111-11111 Right hand repeated notes: 11111-15555-15555-15555-15555-11111-11111-11111 2:14 Left hand: 532-4-531-4-532-4 2:17 Right hand: 123121 Left hand: 321321 2:18 I just play the first two notes of that one measure as 14, everything else as 15 or 51 2:22 1-5-1-4-5-5-1-4-15-4-2 2:25 See 1:22. 2:27 15 and 51 again. 2:29 My particular fingering forces me to use 135-1-2-1-2-1 there. 2:34 112233511122511122513434 I'll add more in the replies to this comment.

Now that I think about it, why does no one ever tell you to change fingers in twinkle twinkle little star and other "starter" pieces with repeated notes? If one does not learn to change fingers from the start, it becomes harder to learn to do so later.
