Ya know what’s really helped me with those muscles, sounds super silly but it’s hula hooping!! I have a weighted hula hoop and it really does help build connection to those muscles and strengthen them. Thank you for all your videos Amelia! I ride western and Australian and you by far have helped and taught me the most about being a balanced rider!

This is so helpful! Last time I got a video of me cantering my upper body was rocking back and forward way too much - I know I was trying to open and close the hip angle and so I wasn’t bouncing. But I find riding is like that; you get control of one body part and some other body part gets a mind of its own!

I had to watch this and then watch it again really studying what Stephanie was saying about the opening and closing of the hip angle. Just last week end I made a video of me riding. I was so disgusted with my canter work. I thought to myself I look like a "weeble" (remember those toys from a long time ago?) at the canter. In fact, just like Amelia when she was "going badly" in this video. So today I really concentrated on correctly using my hip angle and not gripping with my knees. Much better!!!! Thank you.

My whole issue is fear. If my horse doesn't seamlessly go into canter, or leaps into it, I immediately tense up, then they go faster, then I stay tense and bounce around and it's a vicious cycle. I know that everything will get easier with practice, but it's hard to get over the fear.
@TheBadgerliz
@TheBadgerliz 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly the same. I can't seem to ask for the canter without tensing up and forward, and fear keeps me from keeping my heel down when I ask, so I sometimes loose my stirrup. Fear is definitely keeping me from progressing forward.

Try a trot pole to a small x-bar! I find it's the easiest way to pop into the canter for riders who need to get used to the canter feel. Without adding too many transition cues and worrying about timing, a rider can get a feel for the canter and gain some confidence!
@CDN_Bookmouse
@CDN_Bookmouse 3 жыл бұрын
I feel this. What has helped me the most is a VERY simple solution--use a neck strap. Just wrap an old stirrup leather around the horse's neck, or tuck the fingers of your inside hand under the martingale. It will help you learn where to place your hands, and you will feel much more secure during the transition. The more transitions you do, the more comfortable you'll get. When you're afraid and tense, your horse will be more tense, and everything will feel even worse. Just hold onto that strap with your inside hand like it's baby's first pony ride--and don't let anyone shame you for it! I learned to get much more comfortable by doing simple drills. Two strides with hands on the strap, breathing in, two strides hands off breathing out. Just keep practicing and it will get better. Don't be too proud to accept the help. Also it has helped me, since I ride more sensitive horses, to count my canter rhythm BEFORE I ask for the transition. Count the tempo of the slow, gentle canter you WANT and the horse should pick up on those unconscious signals you send. And if you have to canter the whole time with your hand on that strap then do it and don't let anyone tell you it's wrong. You're practicing and getting used to the feeling. It's probably been a while since you learned to trot, but a lot of us did learn by holding onto a strap or the saddle or the mane. There's no reason you can't go through that process all over again, no matter how old you are. You just need to put the time and practice in at the canter, same as you did way back then when you were learning to trot. You can do it!!

Friesians and other harness breeds find canter quite hard in the beginning. I would work the canter on the lunge to help her find her balance. Another trick that works well is to pop over a tiny jump and then continue in canter on landing.

In particular when going to the left I try to concentrate on keeping my feet straight and being in the center of my horse but I still seem to slide right so have to pull to saddle back to the left side. I can canter bareback much better but he goes slower as well. I am trying to canter without stirrups but its a bit messy at the moment.

Try doing work in two point to lengthen and strengthen your leg. Also, posting to the canter in a rhythm of up 6 strides, down 6... Then shorten to 3 strides and then sit every other stride and try fully seated. Go back to earlier progressions to get your long leg back and properly on the horse.

I can do it if my trainer puts me on the lunge, but once we're on our own, my horse will break into trot as soon as I try to turn her off the long side. I’ve been taking weekly lessons now for about 18 months and I have been working the canter for about a year now. I am really struggling on one school horse whereas the other school horse I ride I have better luck finding my position. My trainer explains that with the horse I struggle on, he needs my help to collect him before we get in stride because he is so long. However, I find myself a little lost and behind the horse when I do this. Do you have any suggestions as to how I can adjust so I’m in stride ?

I have difficulties cantering. My horse is way higher level than my riding ability. In fact when I ride incorrectly it pins his ears or like he did yesterday but I tried to canter, he kicked out hard like Mom you're doing it wrong!! I have two friends that ride resides extremely well and they ride my horse for me and they ride him very well level two to level three dressage easily I am a decent writer but I don't have a good person to take lessons with at this time yet How do I learn to ride better so I can get my horse to cantor collected??

The bouncy issue with me is turning out to be leaning forward. You think your vertical in my case but I'm not

yes, it can be hard if you're riding by yourself to tell that!

A bit too technical with reference to a number of different muscle groups that many would not be familiar with. Amelia, you do a much better job yourself in some of your other videos when describing position, movement, and weigh.
